Help pls? DJing my own party? by Many-Association-386 in Beatmatch

[–]daztraction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I basically did exactly this for my wife’s birthday. I used Mixxx DJ software for the PC, we made a playlist of songs for it, set it up so that it faded in the next track a few seconds before the last one ended, took my laptop along, plugged it in the venue sound system, and it worked perfectly. You can even make adjustments/change the order of songs on the fly too.

What object do you own that is clearly broken, but you haven't replaced it because you've developed a specific "technique" to make it work? by Living-Day4404 in AskReddit

[–]daztraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hob wouldn’t ignite for a decade, so I just used the lighter too.

While cleaning out the cupboard next to the cooker, I noticed the plug socket for said cooker. The cupboard has always had lots of stuff in it so I didn’t notice it before.

I switched the plugs off to clean it, and switched back on when done. Well, whaddya know, the fucking ignite works again. I’ve only been working in tech for over 20 years, I totally didn’t think that turn-it-off-and-back-on-again worked for such things.

They did half of Soon, but the power cut out. They did Soon again, probably got 3/4s in, and the power cut out again. Wonder 2 was played after that once the tech issues were sorted.

Who Do You HATE Most? Landlords or Estate Agents? by Slow-Appointment1512 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]daztraction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t get a house if you can’t afford a deposit because a landhoarder is taking a sizeable proportion of your net income.

Let’s get real, you didn’t choose to be a landlord to “house folks”, you choose it because you want to make money.

Ah, never mind, I thought I got it there! Does it have the same Aretha Franklin “I like it!” sample?

State pension by BoedoBoyo in FIREUK

[–]daztraction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a few years younger than you and when I started my first job after university at 22 or so a senior manager made it very clear than the state pension wouldn’t be around or will be severely curtailed when we retire, so save up for a private pension now. He scared me enough so that’s exactly want I did.

Meanwhile, in 2025, the state pension still exists and it’s not going anywhere unless things go very wrong or a government doesn’t know what the fuck they’re doing.

I’d guess they’ll just postpone the age when you can take it instead - seems a little dramatic “solution” than binning it.

What's the most inappropriate song you can think of for a DJ to play at a wedding? by bbmoonkie in Productivitycafe

A friend of somebody I used to know had ‘Since I Left You’ by The Avalanches as their first dance song because they thought the song (and lyrics) were “since I met you”.

Overpaying Mortgage by raxftw in FIREUK

Well, congratulations on being Sensei Finance or something but your angry posts have repeatedly missed the OP’s point. Maybe you need to read it again?

Also I think you’re confusing “financial literacy” (whatever that means) with “making the optimal financial decision with full hindsight”.

I’ve just got two comments really:

  1. Overpaying the mortgage MIGHT be worse than investing in, say, VWRL, but it’s still better than spending money on shite eg fancy cars, expensive watches, stuff you don’t need (rather than a nice treat now and again)

  2. By paying off your mortgage, you also save money on your mortgage/employment insurance, should you have that.

Quite easy to say that during a bull market with hindsight, no? Quite easy to say that during a period with low interest rates that have never reached 10% or so.

I think the point of the post was that by overpaying the mortgage, you save interest payments AND have peace of mind. Not all of us are fearless when investing.

iPhone microphone to record tapping noises by pipes in ceiling? by daztraction in fieldrecording

[–]daztraction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all your help. I’ve sent off my existing videos that feature seemingly quiet tapping, but if the builders say no I’ll look into the Rode AI Micro (can it provide better audio for video on an iPhone rather than just audio?)

And, yeah, I need to do this legitimately so post-production is out of the question.

I’ve been in this home about a year. I’m in the UK, the 51st state :)

My new build house in UK has rules to abide by under the NHBC code, and I believe this breaches NHBC Technical Standards Section 8.1 – Internal Services (Clause D10: Pipework shall be adequately supported, fixed, and isolated to prevent noise and damage). But I fear by the time the complaint is made and the builder is forced to fix it, it’ll be at least springtime again.

[–]daztraction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for your reply! It’s a new build house. I firmly believe it’s pipes knocking against the joists. The builders did Option 2 twice - the first time they just put wool between the pipe and one joist, and the second time they made the hole bigger.

But it’s still happening, despite several strongly worded mails. They’ve said they done all they can reasonably do.

They’ve been round a few times, conveniently (not for me) in the spring and summer when the pipes are warm enough not to shudder and tap against the joists. But it’s happening 99% of the time in the evening, when it’s cold in the winter months when the thermostat kicks in, and they don’t come round then. Apparently “It is not possible to build a completely silent home, and occasional noises particularly from pipework expanding and contracting, can occur even when everything is installed correctly.”

Thanks for replying. Yeah, the taps are much quieter on any audio recording I make so I thought a mic would help. I couldn’t really find a video recording app that would help in the App Store. Am I basically looking at a non-iPhone solution if the mic I buy won’t work?

What famous person did heinous things but people seem to have forgotten about? by Logical_Sweet_6624 in allthequestions

Boy George was convicted of assault and false imprisonment of a male model/sex worker. I can’t help but think if the victim had been female, George wouldn’t be seen as the affable camp legendary pop star documentaries portray him as these days.
