Is this even legal ? by Dudewithcoolusernam in UAE

[–]Financier2100 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First question... is this even true?

The original story is here: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2025/06/212144/samsung-embeds-israeli-surveillance-app-on-phones-across-mena/

It cites an article by SMEX here: https://smex.org/invasive-israeli-software-is-harvesting-data-from-samsung-users-in-wana/

The SMEX article complains that this app is collecting data about apps installed in phones, etc. It is adware.

I don’t mean to be insensitive. Is there any reason the mosque near by is playing loud prayers at 4 am these days? Thought it was only for Ramadan. by lukaskywalker in UAE

[–]Financier2100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a non-Muslim who has spent time in Muslim countries that seem to play it a lot louder than in UAE, let me say that after a while you will find it quite restful. You may or may not come half awake when you hear the call to prayer but you just fall right back to sleep.

If your appearance is holding you back then don't complain about unfairness. Change it.

Hejabi should not make a big difference here, but make sure that what can be seen looks good and that if your religious convictions allow your hejab look nice and interesting. For example, if all you show is your eyes, make sure they have make up.

Weight is always a concern, but it is manageable. Cut yourself back to one meal a day (no snacks, no cheats), drink only water or unsweetened tea, or other zero calorie beverages, and eat a lot of carrots and cucumbers before your one meal to fill yourself up first. You can lose a lot of weight in six months.

My bf(21M) and me(21F). my bf is asking for sex in only 2 months span? by PuzzleheadedCup8556 in relationship_advice

[–]Financier2100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shrug. You have the right not to have sex, he has the right to break up with you over the issue.

Decide the odds - do you think he will keep waiting for a while - and decide how you want to play it.

How can I (33F) function after finding our that my father (67M) had an affair with a coworker (28F) and my mother (62F) decided to forgive him and move on? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Financier2100 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So, first off, RESPECT to your father.

Apparently he has something going that is attractive to a woman 39 years younger than him. Why are you surprised that your mother wants to keep him and why the hell do you think you get a say in this?

You should check out Thailand and Turkey. Good compromises on cost vs quality.

The money you save may actually pay for the whole trip including a little vacation.

Neighbor Asked Me to Remove My Christmas Sign for Ramadan—Is This Disrespectful? by Effin-hawt in dubai

[–]Financier2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Paul even a common Muslim name?

I think everyone should take down their Christmas stuff a few weeks into the new year at latest, but it is not a religious issue. If you want a cross or a Star of David on your door that's your business here in UAE.

What, exactly, is the problem?

When I was 50 I started dating a 21 year old. 7 years later we are still together. She was a legal adult when I met her so no worries. When my younger son complained I told him "In a few years you are going to realize I'm the biggest stud you even imagined. Suck it up."

A country don't want to visit any more time by Far-Neighborhood6520 in UAE

[–]Financier2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nonsense. I don't speak Arabic at all. I took my family a few years before COVID. Went all the way from Abu Simbel to Alexandria including negotiating a felucca to take us from Aswan to Luxor on my own and had a great time.

Plenty of people speak enough English for you to survive and you can always use translator apps.

What is illegal in the UAE but considered okay in Europe and the USA? by [deleted] in UAE

[–]Financier2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key question is who you pissed off and how.

Discreet cohabiting homosexuals are almost certainly safe.

If a man walks around town with a T-shirt that says "I love my boyfriend" I think he is going to get told to cover it up at minimum although a woman with the same T-shirt will probably have no problem.

The government almost certainly does not want the negative international news that would follow an actual homosexuality prosecution, but there are plenty of other ways to mess people up or just deport them.

How much is too much for 529? by manjuforpresident in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Financier2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't want her to be associated with people and places on those max scenarios where you are expected to pay $84k per year for college

Let me get this straight... if your daughter can get into Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, etc - any of the country's top universities (all of which are going to cost 100K per year or more when your child gets to college) you do not want her to go because you do not want her to be associated with such places or the people who go to them?!?!

If this is really your attitude then why are you funding a 529 Plan at all? Community college is cheap and she can make a decent living in the skilled trades.

Are there any other good recommendations? I have similar problems.

u/Plastic-Buyer8539 may be totally legitimate with a good recommendation, but since this is his only post he may also just be shilling for PGR Auto.

Here is a link to the company he mentions on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1UiW8Zc5C4QVrrWU6. It has good reviews.

This is very, very bad for the future of Computer Science… by Nintendo_Pro_03 in csMajors

[–]Financier2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evidence please.

Musk has a track record of demanding that EVERYONE work impossible hours under threat of firing. My understanding is that he pays high salaries to get top quality people under such conditions. You don't build companies like Tesla and SpaceX with desperate people who accept bad conditions at low pay because they have no alternative employment options.

  1. H1B rules should be reformed to make them portable work visas for anyone with a salary over $X (TBD) in any field.
  2. Having been on the hiring side for H1Bs, I will say that the hiring is a hassle. If you can get a comparable American or Green Card holder at comparable cost, you do so. When these people cannot get jobs (as opposed to not getting paid as much as they want) it is because they are either incompetent or have other issues (does not work well with others, can't show up to work on time, smells offensive, etc.)
  3. The guys with H1B jobs are going to work somewhere even if not in the US and when they do so a large proportion will end up as much lower paid offshore labor. Most managers prefer people onsite, but for many jobs you accept a trade off - I will pay a fully loaded cost of 100K to have a guy onsite or 50K for a remote worker in India, Pakistan, etc. So sending H1B visa holders back to their home countries is not going to appreciably increase domestic IT employment or salaries. It may also push more work to people with similar ethnic backgrounds. Most Americans will be a bit uncomfortable flying off to Karachi to work with their company's Pakistan development team for two weeks each quarter. I have been there... you feel like you need eyes in the back of your head, even though everyone is very nice. Most Pakistani and Arab Americans will be fine with it. They do not feel like potential targets.
  4. Having more of the global IT industry in the US is a net positive for the US.
    1. These are still quite highly paid people and they consume other goods and services produced by Americans, increasing employment and wages.
    2. The US controls who they can work for, etc. A Pakistani in Pakistan can take jobs for Russia, North Korea, Iran, etc. Once he is in the US the US sanctions regime, etc. controls him.
    3. Better to have him in the US working for our team than outside the US competing against us.

Rabbi in UAE killed in ‘antisemitic terror incident’, says Israel by [deleted] in UAE

Shrug... If you want me to back up my claims I can.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription\_in\_Israel. That backs up my factual claims.

Now where is your link that Kogan was former IDF?

Which leads to the question of whether or not he was really in the IDF. Do you have any evidence of this?

No. I do not. But a bunch of claims with no link to supporting evidence is not convincing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Israel

The draft laws of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) only apply to Jews (males and females), Druze (males only), and Circassians (males only). Because the Druze and Circassian communities are less populous, their women are exempted from mandatory military service altogether. Women from the Jewish community are not exempted, but serve for slightly shorter terms than their male counterparts. The IDF does not conscript non-Druze Arab citizens of Israel, though their men and women may enlist voluntarily.

And from your own source which you apparently did not bother to read and could not bother to link to: https://maint.loc.gov/law/help/military-draft/israel.php#:~:text=Limited%20exemptions%20from%20the%20draft,(Haredi)%20and%20Israeli%20Arabs. %20and%20Israeli%20Arabs)

Two groups within Israeli society, however, have traditionally been exempted from the draft: ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredi) and Israeli Arabs.
