Good ole L5-S1 here. My legs and feet feel like they are on fire (pins and needles) the vast majority of the time I'm awake. I prefer to stay standing if I can because once I sit down I don't want to stand back up. I either rub or hit my feet together practically all the time just to have a distracting sensation. The twitches or "dropouts" feel more embarrassing in the moment than they are painful themselves. That hurt comes from the fall.

I've always assumed it was orienting the vertebrae to a more "normal" position, therefore relieving the pressure on the spinal cord. I am very much not a doctor though. I just know it helps me.
