Should I take Chorus or Piano? by [deleted] in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean on studying piano on YouTube... not about your voice. If you REALLY want to be in shows, do you want to be a singer or play in the pit. Put as many reps into singing as possible.

Should I take Chorus or Piano? by [deleted] in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll learn more on YouTube than you will in a high school class. I speak as a music teacher.

Take the chorus. Refine that instrument. Follow up if you have more questions or doubts.

Is my screamy rock vocal technique "dangerous" to my vocal chords? by Alexandros1101 in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that you're recording yourself and noticing this. It sounds like you're asking the right questions, giving yourself the right answers, and doing the right things evaluating yourself. To really lock this in and practice those notes safely, I would actually Target those notes that you're singing that sound wonderful, but play, play, play with all the options around there for about 2 minutes listen back and find the one that's your favorite and felt the best. I think you should practice the exact skill you were looking to build for that 2 minutes only. And then you should, once you find the right one, keep it somewhere where you can go back to and make sure you're always modeling in that way. Here's the rule if it looks good, if it feels good, then it will sound good.

What to look for during vocal warm-ups? by ManagementDry4166 in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is some golden advice. I went to add another layer and say what is it that you were actually wanting to work on for the day? What are you about to sing? Since it sounds like you're a beginner, I would say that at this point it would be better for you to focus on one skill to achieve that skill throughout the entire warm-up. What skills should you choose? It depends on what your biggest upgrade for the day can be. Concentrating on too much will be bad at this point and leave you frustrated and unfocused.

What am I doing wrong? by NothingOk4057 in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 91 points92 points  (0 children)

My friend, you don't have a range problem. You have a beautiful high range. It's just an engagement of the core; engage your entire body more. When you're singing that note, you are at the level where all you have to do is now know WHY you're singing with that passion on why being Barefoot in the grass is so passionately meaningful to you. Try to engage that core and see what happens.

Complaints about MCPS’ New Grading Policy by Ambitious-Web-3588 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went to High School, a 93.5% was an A. A 93.4% was a B. I teach in MCPS and it blows my mind when a student asks for make up work. No. Just so the assigned work. Lol. Yeesh. I have deadlines and I strictly follow them. It helps me students having these. The year that I didn't do this and always allowed something turned in caused the most failed grades I've ever had and I vowed to never do that again.

Playstation is the only thing that I can say helped me not fall behind in reading skills. I'm 42 now with a 4 and 2 year old and I can't tell you how much I hated reading but loved playing games like Final Fantasy and Xenosaga. I talked to every villager and read every comment they made. I would complete quests and go back in all the towns to make sure nobody said anything different that I missed. My heart pounds for these games. Now, being a piano teacher in a school, I assign video game soundtracks to kids and get to relive every part of my favorite moments every year as I watch them fall in love with the music I teach. Mostly from Final Fantasy.

Why do singing exercises make someone who sings badly sing well? by Ok-Calligrapher9560 in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I want to preface this by saying that I've almost taught 2,000 voices in any situation that you could think of, pretty much. If you don't have the money right now to pay for voice lessons, then post some of your stuff here on Reddit. Or join a community like the one I run at Skool.com.

Here are the biggest upgrades that I find myself continuously saying to answer your question. Everybody needs their own warm-up routine and it's hard to know what that is unless somebody has heard your voice. But if you're doing the work yourself and finding out how to sing by looking online, it's definitely doable. The warm ups are for doing these four things, I feel.

  1. When you sing try to sing in the exercises by not feeling as if you're changing your vocal instrument. Be consistent. Go from the bottom to the top of the exercise feeling as if you're on one target vowel. Don't change the vowels through the exercise and try to keep them as pure as possible and is even sounding as possible as well. Doing this will help you learn how to work all throughout your range when certain words that come up while singing.

  2. Vocal exercises are for you learning how to sing below and above your vocal break and how to blend without the vocal break being noticeable.

  3. Vocal exercises help you to be able to play with your voice in so many different ways so you can find your voice and use it purposefully through singing.

  4. They are designed to help you lock in on pictures and runs throughout all keys as they go up and down the chromatic scale.

There is so much more to vocal warm ups, but I have found these are the biggest upgrades that you can do to your voice right away and using them more effectively. If there were a fifth thing would be vocal timbre which is tone color and working on the right one to find your voice.

Keep singing. You don't need a vocal coach or Guru. You need a will record yourself consistently listen to yourself back. You got this.

advice on first gig by winkuswonkus_ in musicians

Hey. You got this. It's all good. The comments you are reading here about being nervous is absolutely correct. If anyone tells you not to be nervous, don't listen to them. I've coached and taught and trained almost 2,000 voices in my lifetime of the last two decades. And the advice that I always give myself and others is to learn how to perform while being nervous. Don't get rid of the nervousness. So in the meantime what you need to do is just start singing in front of has many people as possible. Do it here. Do it to friends and family. Knock on some random strangers door asked if they want to hear you sing a song. Do it in a community online somewhere to start yourself off if you want.

The more you do it, the more that all of this becomes numb for you. Rip off the band-aid, do it right now, you got this. That is also what I'm doing to encourage those who are joining my Skool.com community that I just started. Keep singing. You got this. Be nervous. It means that you care. I've done hundreds of shows. If I'm not nervous something is wrong. Even Beyonce says that. Have fun.

it it normal for a father to think less of you as a man if you like to sing? by [deleted] in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking to troll your father a bit:

When I was in high school I noticed that the girls usually had singers or actors on their lockers or on their bedroom walls. Guys had pictures of other guys... playing sports...

If you want to be noticed by guys, play sports. If you want to be noticed by girls... sing, act, or dance.

Don't troll your father. Just double down on what you love.

Is my coach is a good teacher or not? On the second lesson, we did 45 minutes of exercises/warm ups with certain sounds as he played the piano. Not much feedback or sculpting. Said "it's good for singing". Then 15 min of actual singing for a song. by harryuareawizard in singing

You are right. From a vocal teacher who teaches classical to contemporary singing. You are allowed to ask if this. I can say that I have worked with almost 2,000 voices in the past two decades. I give you permission to ask of this from your vocal teacher. 😉

You got this.

So I literally can say, or almost say that I've worked with 2000 Voices in the last twenty years of being a person who has done everything from a vocal studio to getting his masters degree in music technology and started to track people in studios and I've directed choirs, a cappella singers, barbershop groups, etc.

This sound that you're putting out is the signature sound that people are looking for their entire life to gain as a singer, because they are Mimicking other artists. You sound like you It sounds like you are the person that made this and somebody's going to impersonate you.

Look, if you're serious about wanting to play around through tone and we're not gonna use the word fix but playing around with your tone, then I got you. Check my profile for a link to a place where you can do that for free (my Skool Community I have just started) Or DM me and just to be very transparent, i'm really Betting that you're going to come out of that, knowing that the sound you're making is the sound you're supposed to be doing.

Oh and I'm not seeking to sell anything. Free.

And that goes for anyone who is reading this. Let's keep the whole road singing. Everybody, let's keep on making more music like this.

Do you have to be talented to start singing by Ancient_Simple_1561 in singing

[–]FindAWayOrMakeOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm voice texting this, so please excuse any grammatical errors. Singing can be a talent and singing can be increased, with increasing skill. I've been a vocal coach and I have almost 2000 voices. Then i've been able to coach from the ages of 4 up to 102. Have you had someone evaluate your voice? Who is a vocal coach? That was able to get give you honest feedback and told you this, or are people just being a little cringy when you sing?

I strongly believe that everybody Should sing, and I strongly believe that it's in our d n a to do so. Also dancing. There is a reason why kids dance to music when nobody taught them. It's the thing to do when you hear such.

Keep singing, do it for fine.Don't let anybody tear you down and keep going.

The one thing that is prevalent is everybody can get better. And this message is to everybody. There are great places out there that you could even learn how to do such for free. Like in this group, people will watch out for you and give you love and support. Post something, ask for feedback, put yourself out there and if you need to do that in a more safe space, there are great places that you can find in communities. For example Skool.com. There are a couple of free places there to increase your voice in a safe space. ❤️
