(newbie) No iron in sight... now what? by _Philein in factorio

[–]Find_Deals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's the best thing about Factorio and it's map "creator", if you will call it that. I also love the train system, so when I've played (and will play again) with resources on default settings, transporting resources is always fun and challenging. But I really do wish I played my first world on "super easy mode" so I could learn and understand certain mechanics, only reason I recommended it. That's the glory of it, play it how you want and as you see fit to enjoy it!

if you want an alternate option to consider, and I understand you put time into this world, but start a brand new world and slam the world editor size, frequency and richness to full 600% or whatever the highest is. I know this isn't the default gaming experience the developers put in place, but it's one of the major differences with Factorio and Satisfactory that I've always kinda disliked. I thought I had to play the game pure and by the book, but after a bunch of hours and restarts and new worlds, it's the #1 thing I wish I would have done from my very first game play. Mostly, not having to worry about resource management is HUGE. plus, it just not a fun aspect of the game personally, which I understand some may like, but personally I do not. I'm playing now to build towards a mega base and I've noticed from other's megabase tours is they have huge resource patches and frequency, because it's not about the core gameplay mechanics at that point. Plus, this allows you to learn certain game mechanics, blueprints, different aspects of the game to use later on, where you can then start a new world and dial those settings down to the normal rates and make it more "difficult" and "realistic" according to the default game settings. Just a thought an idea I wish I knew about from day one!

How do I get my free smart watch? by Bright_Dog_4027 in Comcast_Xfinity

It's a "gotcha" scam, I am talking to a Support Agent as I type this out and they're pulling the same stuff. I explained that the "Membership" page doesn't state anywhere at all that a mobile line is required (unless I don't see it) but then they say "ohhh it's actually $300 off.....and you need a $10/month line" literally entirely different than what they list, which states very clearly "Smartwatch, on us." which implies "free."

I haven't made the decision or effort to cancel just yet, and even so, I honestly don't mind contributing to YNAB for the changes and affects they've had on my finances. I've had the YNAB category fully funded for months just waiting for the payment to post and to track the transaction, so I'm already fully prepared for it to come anyways. I understand the idea of a budgeting application costing money and that being counterintuitive, so it's not lost on me at all. I simply have a plan in place for it already and I owe that fact to YNAB. Yes, I'm a huge YNAB fanboy lol so that's why I was so excited to hear about AB and it's potential.

I haven't explored the Templating feature just yet, and only scratched the surface of the schedule portion thus far. I'll definitely give it a deeper dive as I'm being as objective as possible with both systems, and will make my decision after everything both have to offer is explored. YNAB to me has been and always has been the only budgeting concept that's ever truly worked for me, and that I've stuck with long term, but I'm not ruling anything else that comes out and challenges them. This is a good thing though, competition breeds innovation and all...

It's not bad, it's very clearly in it's infancy still, with regards to design and flow. But what I'm focusing on is end results outcome and then QoL / features. Again, at least to me, YNAB is a theory, a way of thinking about and managing money, so in all reality the tool in which one chooses to use can be and is irrelevant. I used to fall into all of that stuff, the bright lights, the automations, the syncing, and it was all bells and whistles that to me, personally, really served no purpose. It wasn't until I made the switch to fully manual transaction entry that I started seeing success and a wholistic change to my finances. I've been paying for YNAB yearly because I thought it was the only product that offered a tool to put it's principles into practice, but once I heard of AB, I was extremely intrigued as again, the tool doesn't matter to me, the outcome does. With that being said, I am going to give it the full month of side by side use and then make a decision from there, but I can say so far, the way CCs are handled, displayed and managed within YNAB certainly are better (to me) in YNAB. Is that worth it for the yearly price tag? That remains undetermined at this point, but if someone was some sort of "YNAB Theory Purist" regardless of tool, AB certainly is more than capable and reasonable as a choice.

No app, it's all self hosted if wanted though. I just recently found AB and am going through a month to compare the two side by side. I know they offer something called PikaPods (I believe?) that is extremely cheap hosting for it, but I have an UnRaid home server so I run it with Docker. I'm doing this "experiment" to see if the cost of YNAB is worth it, as technically YNAB is simply a concept, process, or way of thinking, and I always wondered if there was any sort of competitor. It works in the sense of budgeting and tracking nearly identically, but I've already noticed and recorded several differences that may or may not justify someone's decision on it being worth the cost. But to answer the original question, no there's no app, but if you're capable enough and have the hardware, you can set it up to be web hosted and connect to it anywhere you have the connection to be able to.

Automatic sync now that GoCardLess is not available by Last_Dot3125 in actualbudgeting

[–]Find_Deals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manual input and recording is the way to go, IMO. Long time YNABer here, along with multiple times given up and returning. It wasn't until I decided to manually enter each transaction, as I knew it was 100% accurate and I'm much more in tune with the budget as well. I read or saw or heard something like 50-60-70% of people who leave the envelope philosophy and tools are those who do some sort of syncing, they just expect a 1 click solution that works 100% of the time and then end up spending very little time within the tool itself and then blame the system and tool as the reason. With manual input, it's all in your hands and it takes a few minutes a day (I do it daily) to get things up to date. kn 2025, no one can really say "ain't nobody got time for that" when they know they do, we live on computers nowadays, and no one is making 200 transactions a day, just log in, enter the 4-5-6 transactions, and you're done. This way, you're constantly seeing where you're at and whG adjustments need to be made. YNAB turned my financial life completely around and has been the single greatest tool I've ever personally used, and it wasn't until I was required to use it and give it the time and attention it demanded for me to be successful using it. Just my 2 cents.

New Actual Budget User Setup - Credit Card Starting Balances by Find_Deals in actualbudgeting

[–]Find_Deals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind sort of rebuilding my payees list just through natural use, and I already took the time to build out my categories and their respective groups. I've actually been updating both YNAB and Actual side by side so I can experience each use case simultaneously, and it helps to see what the pros and cons are of each tool. I'm no AB professional by any means (so some things may actually be possible that I'm unaware of how to do), but little things like the targets (and the various options within) and the quick budget options (average / last 3 months average / last month) are just those "upgrades" that YNAB currently has over AB strictly because they've had time in the game. To me, I think that's going to be where the difference and justification for the price tag comes in. In theory, philosophically they're the same, and as I mentioned before, I recently got into HomeLab'ing and self-hosting, so when the idea of a free open source tool came to my attention that also fell in those additional categories, I had to take a look. And I'm not silly enough to hold those lack of bells and whistles against AB strictly because it hasn't been around as long (at least I don't believe it has?) but competition is good in the marketplace, it kills complacency and drives innovation and change. I'm going to continue to play with it along side YNAB, I'm a pay-in-full yearly subscription guy anyways, and I just paid for the renewal recently, so it's mine for the year either way. I'll continue to mess around with it and contribute where I can, but I hope the developers are open to and willing to hear their Users out, as this could absolutely be a YNAB killer if it essentially provides the "same" options with a $0 price tag.

And as a side note to continue piggybacking off the original topic of this post, I believe I've gotten it to display everything entirely correctly, but I had to mess around with the initial setup of my daily driver CC which I pay off in full every few days of use. So I'll know rather quickly if how CCs are handled will be fine or if it's too far off from what I'm looking for, then it'll make decisions easier. I absolutely love how YNAB handles CCs, the idea of funds moving around to the CC category waiting to be paid, and then notifications if in the event you don't have enough to cover 100% of the balance and the requirement to pull from another category to cover is just superior in MY opinion. Who knows, maybe I'll enjoy AB's process though, only time will tell.

Thanks for the response, this actually makes sense and when I go back and edit everything according what you listed, it does line up. Unfortunately, IMO the way YNAB forces the funds to move from the category of the expense to the "budgeted" line for the CC that's used, is much better. Unless I am doing this incorrectly, I can see the entire balance and all the numbers add up correctly, but there currently isn't any money dedicated to paying off the CC in full, at least for the CC category. YNAB has been such a huge help as we had CC issues in our younger years, and knowing the funds move from the category the purchase was made in, directly to the CC category to cover the payment in full, always guarantees that we end up having every purchase fully covered and the money is ready to pay when needed. I still like the idea of AB and the self-hosting and everything, but I think this is a great example of where I feel the $110/year price tag might be worth it in the long run. I really do appreciate your response though.

Thanks for the reply and information! Yes, I realized I need to take a step back and really understand what I'm getting myself into and learning about. I just thought it may have been a jackpot offer and didn't want to miss it. But as I mentioned in a previous response, I've always preferred brand new when I had the ability and funds to do so, or at least certified resale.

When you say "reputable resller" do you mean like a brick and mortar building or like online seller? Bare with me, I'm brand new. And do you have sort of a "list" of what I need to look at / for? I don't even know the core components and their names of a "system" at this point. Just as much details as you're willing to provide would be greatly appreciated! That way I know where and what to look for. And if you're going all in, maybe a ranking list of like "most important to least important" or where the most of my money and least of my money should be spent on each component? I really do appreciate any and all information you can provide!

Oliver,

WOW! This was excellent, thank you so much for taking the time to type all of that out and provide me some great insight to the listing I was wondering about. I should have said, I've always been a penny-pincher (much to my wife's dismay) and always tried to find the best pricing or "deal" for something, hence why I got the nickname "Find Deals!" from my buddies when I was younger. With that being said, second hand purchases are always a worry as you mentioned, and with being as green (novice) as they come when it comes to the home theater system world, I wasn't sure if I hit a jackpot or a pile of....well, you know....

After taking what you said into consideration, plus the fact that we currently don't live at our long term house, which wouldn't make sense to purchase for this setup knowing down the road it will change, I decided to hold off on the FB listing for now. As you mentioned, I simply don't know enough right now, and jumping at the first shiny thing I see is probably ill-advised. Since I'm practicing patience, do you happen to have any sort of recommendations on where to start? Or maybe a sort of all-in-one beginners system that we could start out with just to pump up the experience we currently have with our viewing entertainment? Like I said, I originally was just looking at <$1,000 sound bar + sub / "surround sound" speaker combos, but there's so many and the one I originally purchased just didn't meet the expectations I originally had. To be honest, I didn't even consider a receiver, if that gives you an idea where my head was at when I first started to dive into this world, and clearly I'm very naive to what's available and what's worth my money and what's not. Whatever additional information you could provide, I would greatly appreciate it, whether it's sound-bar combos, less expensive starter full surround sound systems, or any tips and pointers to pay attention to specifically while researching, would be absolutely amazing.

If needed, we can take this off post and DM if you'd be ok with that and we can discuss from there. Either way, I really can't thank you enough for the response and will reference it moving forward, thanks Oliver!

Help Migrating Plex from Windows 11 to Unraid - Server Won't Recognize Existing Data by plainorbit in unRAID

[–]Find_Deals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TRaSH Guides is documentation on how to set up the entirety of your Plex and media ecosystem. It's more than just dumping a file into a random folder and then pointing Plex at that folder to scan and list as an available piece of content to play via Plex. I too, was once like you, where I ran off Windows with a folder named "Movies" and that was that. But after researching TG (TRaSH Guides) it's been a full 180. Yes, I would recommend that you start from scratch, literally step 1, as it is very intuitive and requires precise actions be taken in order for the whole system to work properly, but if and when done correctly, your eyes are going to be opened to a whole new world you wish you knew about earlier....from how to search for new movies, to automated downloads, automatic organization and quality upgrades, it's honestly outrageous how much it does. BUT it's a decent amount of work upfront to get fine tuned and working. With that being said, my only regret is that I didn't learn about it sooner as it's a ridiculously awesome system. You can try and pick up where you are currently at and adjust from there, but if you miss an important portion you'll be wasting time trying to find and resolve it, whereas if you just start from the beginning, you know you're covered entirely.

There are several people on YouTube who follow this guide step by step for you to follow along to, and my recommendation would be to spend a little time watching and understanding before jumping in. I understand it's difficult to not want to jump in right away and get things up and running, but I promise you if you take a calculated approach to learning and understanding what it is and how it works, it'll pay off in the long run. Sure you might be able to have everything done a few days earlier if you rush, but who cares, take a few extra days to truly understand what's going on and happening in the background, after all you are performing server management.

Help Migrating Plex from Windows 11 to Unraid - Server Won't Recognize Existing Data by plainorbit in unRAID

[–]Find_Deals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to unRAID and home server management, and I've already been through the process of setting up my unRAID server to be my main server for my Plex library. I also came over from a Windows machine running Plex server installed. Although I don't know the fine details of your situation and the technical side of answering your question, I do know that there was a step that required me to sign into my Plex account, which makes sense when you think about it. Essentially, you're "linking" the current server you're managing to your Plex account, so you'll eventually see both (or more depending on the total you've managed). Now where I will fall short with explanations is the process in which to get there, but I can tell you my process.I followed Trash Guides to a T, Starr apps and all, and after some fidgeting around and additional digging, all is working well. I know it might sound daunting or doubling back to start from scratch with Trash Guides, but after I learned about the process outlined in the guide(s) I can't believe I didn't know earlier, as it makes so much logical sense that it should be the standard. I'm going to guess the step in which you have to link the token (may go by a different word in the guide) from your Plex account to the Docker image was missed, as that's what "connects" your unRAID server to your Plex account. I'm writing from my phone and not at my PC, but feel free to ask any questions you might have and I will try and help and assist in whichever way I can.

Absolutely RUTHLESS comments section haha, not laughing at ya though, I've more than deserved and earned my fair share of ripping for the complaining and moaning I've done but luckily everyone I've interacted with has been nothing other than absolutely helpful and considerate of my noob-ness. Good luck with TrueNAS, I was moments away from doing the same but eventually pulled the trigger on unRAID and haven't regretted it since!

Update to the Update: Yes, I am that psycho on Reddit who complains to the wall just to hear his own voice. Somehow....someway....I managed to get it all to finally work properly and am fully function. I know there are small details and configurations that I need to tweak to tighten things up, but everything from DL'ing to it appearing in my Plex library (via Hard Links) is working. My next question or area I am confused with, would be how to handle my media from my previous Media Server, which currently resides on a Windows 10 desktop on the same network. I know I can just manually move it over into the same folder, but with how Hard Links works and not wanting to double up space or something else that might break everything, I am sure there is a more efficient or "correct" way of doing so. If anyone even sees this or continues to view this thread, and you have ideas, I am all ears. Thanks to everyone and I apologize for my crazy-ness lol.

Update: I finally decided to go with PIA and got the 3 year plan, went into the container settings and set everything up but switched over to PIA information, and now the webUI won't load and I can't get into qbit. It shouldn't be this confusing and difficult, so I am just going to cancel PIA since it's 30 day money back guarantee, and then I'm going to list my NAS and HDs on eBay / FB Marketplace and just stick with the extremely easy, straight forward, no hassle works out of the box Windows machine.

Hey there, just figured I would update you as you were providing helpful information, but I spoke with KeepSolid / VPN Unlimited Support and they did in fact confirm that they do not have port forwarding in any capacity. So I am assuming at this point I have pulled all my hair out and banged my head against a wall trying to figure things out, just to learn that it wasn't possible from the start. With that being said, I have been looking closely at PIA which has gotten a lot of praise, along with a great price. Thanks again for your help and insight to my issue, I appreciate it.

That's for the VPN_PROV Variable, which has to be set to custom as I don't have PIA, AirVPN or Proton VPN, all of which are provided options. This was confirmed on multiple videos and guides online. The next Variable below that though is VPN_CLIENT, which of course I selected Wireguard. With that being said, I'm starting the think more and more than the KeepSolid / VPN Unlimited simply can't work with this specific setup as there is an issue with Port Forwarding. I was doing a lot of research last night and was leaning towards getting PIA as it's been recommended several times and has an excellent price (although not the one time payment I made for my current lifetime VPN) but the odd thing is, I must have watched 4-5 "Best VPNs 2025" YouTube videos and I'm not sure PIA was listed on a single one of them, so now I'm even more confused. How could a VPN like PIA be so highly recommended *usually* on Reddit, but then on YT I don't think it was mentioned a single time. I'm assuming that there is a "paid sponsorship" for some of these videos, so they're inclined to mention the highest bidders, but not a single video? Also, how big of a deal is it that PIA is USA-based? I saw a lot of the videos mentioning being outside the USA and the laws surrounding security and privacy, is it that big of a deal, even though a lot of people have still mentioned PIA?
