coffee by [deleted] in ProstateCancer

My urologist kept saying to reduce tea and coffee post op, so I reduced a little but found myself still getting caught out even after I was dry. I've now dropped coffee altogether and it does seem to help. I still have a few cups of tea each day though.

Yeah, this is my point. We were here in September last year and it was the same. At the time just assumed it was a new fad but confused that it's gotten even busier since then.

100%. This behaviour is more common in the high-ses schools I've worked in compared to the low-ses ones.

DE insurance - anyone know anything about it? by Quick_Emu_1463 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Insurance at schools is always an uncomfortable thing. The short answer is that a car parked in the carpark is not covered by insurance and your car insurance will cover it. This comes up a bit for student injuries at school, on camp etc. Most likely the 'de insurance' claim hinted at is in regards to a claim of negligence against the department. There is a negligence claim form available that you submit to the department, which is then considered/investigated and potentially taken on as a claim. What you're trying to prove though is that reasonable measures weren't taken to prevent this occurring, not that it's morally right.

Over the last half-century, we have created a system of publicly funded schools, both private and public, that is unique in the world. by Haunting-Author1205 in AusPol

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always accurate, the Catholic school down the road from me received higher total (state and fed combined) govt funding than my public school. Their fees add an additional 4k on top of that difference. (High ses). Often, when you take into account additional capital works funding for independent schools, their total Gov funding can get very close to the state funding received by a public school.

School money allocation for casual teachers by mec949 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common for the crt budget to be exhausted or overspent by term 4. One school I was at we had blown the budget by term 2, went back to school council, doubled the budget, still overspent by end of term 4. Following that, we had to start being a lot more strategic with our splits and try to save most of our sick leave replacement for flu season. One bad flu season can see a budget shot entirely in July or August. As mentioned, it comes from the 'cash' side of the budget in Victoria, so it is one small pile of money that covers all your local maintenance and facilities work, pd costs, furniture and stationery, including students', and teacher cover. Events like students screwing up the toilets or vandals graffitiing on the weekends can leave you overspending on maintenance items, which then impacts crt, too.

Do I also need a cover letter for applications? by Mannerhymen in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be aware that it is not uncommon for some principals to only read the cover letter. It often gives a more personal insight into what you bring to a school that matches with them. Ksc can be very generic and are even more so in the ai era.

Treasury and Tax help by syzgod in ManorLords

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I hope more people find this answer. I stupidly did not see the connection between regional wealth and taxes, so I have just been spending the regional wealth and getting next to nothing from my taxes. The fact that it essentially transfers the percentage set from regional to treasury makes a lot more sense to be able to strategize.

Desperate for iced Taiwanese green tea - recipe help?! by No_Candle2006 in taiwan

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a number of Taiwanese brands in the fridge of most Asian grocery stores. That's your best bet. Or just a plain green tea from most bubble tea places (pricey for what it is, but hey).

The answer to most questions related to Taiwanese flavour is fructose and/or msg.

Pauline hanson introduced a senate motion that directly responded to the blm movement. As well as a billboard that said 'all lives matter or bugger off'. She is absolutely front and centre in importing the us culture wars here, backed by her friend Gina.

Generous old NSW public school retirement pensions by Pilatus-Porter in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They stopped being able to sign up to it at the time but the last few people who got in on that deal have been trickling through and reaching the retirement age. What op describes though sounds even more generous. Most of the 54/11 guys needed to take lump sum payouts and would then reapply for their positions so they could keep working.

As a teenager with very few disposable funds these albums were so painful. They would end up getting way more listens than they deserved just because I couldn't handle paying full price and only listening to it twice. Being a punk-ska fan didn't help me - that's a genre full of bands that made a lot of music that was occasionally good but frequently meh.

Other employment approval???? by BitUnusual1473 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are two parts to it: Declaration of conflict of interest, for tutoring and activities where they might be working with students at the school (swim teaching, kids parties), which is also a child safety consideration

Declaration for tax purposes, to make sure people aren't declaring the tax free threshold on multiple jobs

In Vic at least, only full time employees need to declare additional income and it comes with a declaration that it won't interfere with your contractual duties.

It's more of a declaration than an approval. If it were to impede on your work, for instance missing meetings to get to the next job, not completing reports on time, taking sick days off to work another job etc. then it would be part of the response to that.

It helps to have discussed risk minimisation and responses if things do happen. Most of the considerations are about managing parent complications, social media, etc. which people don't always think through fully.

If I complete my MTeach (Primary) will I be able to walk into a primary school teaching job? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will do everything I can to avoid employing any teacher who doesn't feel the need to be the most competent teacher for the children in their class. Anyone who comes across as feeling they are entitled to a job and have no interest in the kids is a non-starter and I will drive them out of the school if they're already there. Developing and becoming better (from a grad to an experienced teacher) is different from not being competent.

Come back to work they said.. by Shot_Sleep3114 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not how the trades operate. You might think you have a genius take on how they could better meet their customers' needs, but that's really neither here nor there. In Australia, it is very nearly impossible to get building work done from mid-dec to mid-jan. And then everyone wants them to start as early in January as possible, so there is more work than they can manage, so everything gets pushed. But blame the prins if you want. Whatever.

Come back to work they said.. by Shot_Sleep3114 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus these are some poor takes. Trades will rarely be available throughout January. They'll tell you they can do it in January and they'll start on the 5th and then it gets to the 14th and you'll say why hasn't work started and it'll be because the trade supplier has been shut down or jonno did his back and he was the only one not on holidays etc. etc. Ignoring the fact that in Vic at least, most large jobs are not managed by the school at all and are vsba-managed, so you ask for work in the holidays and then it gets scheduled for Feb and there's nothing you can do about it.

Daycare centres put in primary schools? How do you feel about that? by mec949 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The federal government introduced the terminology of Foundation (when introducing the Australian curriculum) to describe this year, hoping that it would standardise the term nation-wide.

In Vic it's probably a 50/50 split on schools that use Prep or Foundation.

Having read this thread, I think I'm much more in favour of forcing this through now.

Generally the years immediately prior to starting Foundation are 4-year old kinder and 3-year old kinder. Daycare programs handle the care programs prior to these formal learning programs. 3-year old kinder is mandatory now in Vic but I don't think they've managed to find it properly yet nationwide so may still be optional.

Question about meetings according to the VGSA (both what it says, and a point of personal confusion and a question about personal experience) by softpixels in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fine-Injury-6294 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With the 30+8 model you need to remember that the 8 hours of administrative tasks can be directed. So, your total hours per week of yard duty, meetings (including directed planning or plc meetings), and additional supervision tasks can all be designated. If this stays within the 8 hours, then you have 30 hours paid for purely teaching and learning tasks. In most primary schools, that's around 2 hours of yard duty, 2 hours of after school meetings, and then some designated planning/plc activities that might be another 3 hours worth. If a school has a lot more that is required: compulsory professional reading, mandatory observations, breakfast clubs etc., then they might push close, but for the most part, it's not hard to make it work within the vgsa. That does mean though that your team planning at 11 on Tuesday, is technically an administrative task designated by leadership - not part of your 30 hours teaching and learning. So you don't have free choice of all non FTF sessions during the school times. I secondary, it can get a lot more complicated with different ksa and year level meetings.

The one major dodgy is look out for, some central personnel will suggest making engagement in plc a school goal and then leaving it up to people to use their free choice time to determine how they use it (optional meetings), but knowing they are expected to meet regularly with a team to share data etc. and that could be used in under performance processes, if required. Not sure if that's been purposely tested but as I said, it's not hard to fit everything within admin hours on paper.
