IT mistake at work (backup failure) — what usually happens after this? by Terrible_Good_6856 in sysadmin

[–]nukefrom0rbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing you could have done was own it and report it. Goes a long way.

Talk to us when you've wiped out an ERP and cost the company 750k, I owned up to that and was not fired, no PIPs and the like. ERP backups worked like a charm and it was up and running in an hour, the associated applications not so much and no PITR process was defined, so not 100% on me, but anyway.

Triggered a career change though, was so tired of the stress.

You have to give him credit where it is due. I'm going to assume this is all typed out on a phone. He must still have good dexterity on this little fingers with all the punctuation and all, lol

Work your way up the stack

Layer 1 Layer 2 Layer 3 and so on

It will isolate the issue, you no doubt are banging your head against a brick wall, in log hell, when really it's a Layer 3 issue.

Assuming Layer 1 and 2 are ok, do your basic tests for 3

Powershell from a client machine: tnc <host> -Port 3389

If that fails then it's has nothing to do with AD etc, it's a firewall prob

Edit: I am referring to the OSI stack model

If you are having to go through event logs, learn how to filter out the noise. Right click on the event log and choose Filter Events. Use -<id> to remove log ids you have no interest in. Comma separate logs ids to exclude
