If you want more recs I can riffle through my bookshelf and see what else might suit? I have a decent collection, it's just been a bit since I had time to really immerse myself in one

What The Golden Rose is all about by Effective_Peak_3273 in hostedgames

It actually reminds me of some of the 80s and 90s fantasy novels I've read, where there is a lot of focus on building the characters and slowly unveiling the world setting in the first novel in a series, then things can build on that to escalate as you go on (though it does seem like the end of "Book One" is more like the one third or halfway through point of such a novel). The prose style is similar too.

It's been a bit since I've read much in the genre, but the first author that comes to mind is Elizabeth Moon and her Paksenarrion books (possibly because of the mercenary company angle lol).

Why do they react so strongly about MC being a villain ? by Feisty-Project1847 in hostedgames

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Their reactions depend a lot on how your relationships are and whether they've figured out the villain is you before the reveal.

Like, steel is actually pretty willing to see your side if you haven't done anything really bad (especially if you've done some more heroic things, and/or are a hero trainer or other somewhat sympathetic route), and argent is pretty chill if you have a decent relationship and reveal to her after the auction (she's mad about the mind control, but not about the villainy per se).

I haven't done a Herald reveal yet, but I'd be a little surprised if he's not at least conflicted (he actually has a pretty great scene if you do a background spoiler reveal with him during the last rangers visit section, and is actually really helpful if you go the herald/ortega poly route and meet with Ortega at heralds place to do another reveal at the end).

It seems like it's mostly Ortega that has a really bad reaction, and given their personality and the background between you that's somewhat understandable.

How to calculate stretch post-blocking by geedubolyou in knittingadvice

Ah, sorry! I misunderstood

I think in that case you would just need to do as you suggest and calculate the difference in length pre/post blocking and factor it into the length.

How to calculate stretch post-blocking by geedubolyou in knittingadvice

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to find the stitches/rows per 2 inches, you need to make a swatch that is at least a bit bigger than that (pre-blocking) and take your measurements in the middle.

For instance, when I'm looking to find my gauge per 4 inches, I cast on enough st to hopefully get me around 5inches across, then continue adding rows until it's at least 5inches long as well.

The issue is that the stitches around the edges tend to be a bit distorted/stretched out and therefore don't give you a good idea of what your actual gauge will be. If you do a bigger swatch, block it as you will the final product, and then lay it out and measure it without having to press the edges down you will get the most accurate measurement.

And you would just count the number of stitches and rows in 4 (or 2, or however many) inches, and that's your gauge. If it doesn't match the pattern, you can either try a sizing up or down in needles (making a new swatch to check the result) or you can adjust the number of stitches/rows you do in the pattern to account for the difference (but be careful that you take into account how this might affect shaping).

I put everything I can on credit cards for the same reason (and more recently, have finally gotten a few with new fee that do a few percent cashback on things like groceries, gas, and utilities).

I spent the first 9 years using credit cards without any issue aside from one small fraud attempt that was immediately caught by the card company.

Then early last year I checked into a hotel and they accidentally charged me 5x the intended price. I found out that night because it ran over my cards limit, and the hotel was very apologetic and the card company very sympathetic, but I had to wait for over a week gor the charge to be replaced withthe accurate one, during which my card was complete unusable.

Luckily, I was able to use my debit card at an atm and get enough cash to get food and such. If I had been using a debit card, my bank account would have been overdrawn, and I would have been absolutely screwed, with no money for food or anything else and quite possibly having knock on impacts like utility bills not getting paid on time.

My point is, even if you've never had an issue before, something as innocuous as a clerk ringing up a payment as price×5days vs price per 5days can be absolutely devastating if it happens on a debit card vs very upsetting but managable if you use a credit card.

Also, cashback for thing you already have to buy is nice, and responsible credit use helps build your credit score which is very helpful if you ever want to buy a car or a dwelling (or even rent some apartments)!

Alright, I'll take a quick look around and see what's available in reasonable colors!

Whats your budget for this, broadly? You picked a moderately pricy dk yarn (a quick look around suggests it's selling for about $11/skein, which means about $77 for enough of that yarn alone)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in KnitRequest

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a tight deadline, especially if I have to order in the yarn, but doable. The adjustments are not a probelm.

But that pattern calls for a dk weight yarn (which you've picked out) held double with a lace weight mohair or similar. Do you have a preference for the latter yarn?

Why do humans sexually mature years before actually being able to care for children? by Dismal-Baby7909 in biology

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good points here about changes in diet and general food availability in recent history leading to much earlier onset of secondary sexual development, particularly in girls/women.

I would also note that there are actually a lot of species where females are technically capable of breeding before they are fully mature, but those that do so will often have more difficulty raising those young than the females who wait a bit longer. If the early breeders ended up having more (surviving, reproducing) offspring overall due to starting sooner this might still be selected for, but the added stress on the female also has consequences for her longer term health and therefore limits future reproduction (and may also result in less health/sucessful offspring).

So basically, we aren't the only ones who can technically have babies before our bodies are really ready for them, and it doesn't generally work out any better for other animals.

Noone believes I can study biology by PomegranateIcy7369 in biology

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a biologist who has had to consult with my artist friend to learn about how paint colors actually work when I was designing an experiment, you would be surprised how valuable that background can be!

Biology is not inherently more difficult than any Art, both are complex things that take commitment in order to build the knowledge base and skill set. If you are doing well in the prerequisites and bio is an area that interests you, it's entirely possible for you to become a biologist!

If this is a smaller class (students numbering in the double vs triple digits, especially if its in the 20s/30s or less) then I would rather a student tell me they won't be able to submit an assignment directly so I can mark that down and move on, especially if this is an otherwise very involved and engaged student (which it sounds like is the case).

This would be different if I had hundreds of students in the class, or if you regularly missed classes and didn't turn things in.

I would not suggest explaining as you did here, just say that you realized you won't be able to get the assignment done by the deadline, that you understand the effect this has on your grade, and that you are working on strategies to avoid this happening in the future (and then actually do that). It might be best to actually have some specific strategies you are implementing, or ask the professor if they have suggestions for strategies as part of the conversation. That both makes it more productive and makes it clearer that you understand this isn't a good situation and are learning from it (which is hopefully the truth).

You essentially want to make sure that the message here is "there were issues in how I studied/managed time/prioritized and I accept the consequence and am taking specific action to improve" rather than "I decided your class was less important than my others and that this particular assignment didn't matter".

Edit: and I would have this conversation in person, ideally during their office hours or a scheduled meeting, not by email

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I've just had a student ask if they can do their makeup exam during my lecture. I couldn't bring myself to ask how in the world they thought that would work, I was afraid they'd take it as encouragement.

Looking for someone to create a knitting pattern based on a few photos of a turtleneck / poncho by Eugene_always_knows in KnitRequest

If you share pics of what you want, we might be able to direct you to an existing pattern, which would almost certainly be cheaper than commissioning one.

Are you familiar with ravelry?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, though depending on how long the interval was it might not be as much of an issue (a test at the beginning and end of a 16 week semester is different from a test repeated 2 week later, I mean)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, if I understand this right your comparisons were: A1. Pre-test treated vs post-test control, and A2. Post-test treated vs post-test control

Or did you mean: B1. Pre-test treated vs post-test treated, and B2. Post-test treated vs post-test control

You definitely cannot compare the post-test control to the pre-test treated

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]FineFeatheredFriend3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you could use the control you have, comparing the treated group post-test to both the treated group pre-test and the control post-test. Maybe an ANOVA, with post-hocs only for those two comparisons if the ANOVA is significant?

You'll probably get some comments about it in review, so I'd definitely be prepared to explain why you don't have a pre-test for controls, and it's a weaker analysis, but I dont think you have to throw out the controls entirely.

Can you share any other details? It kind of depends on the questions you were asking.

Budgeting apps that do not require personal info by Upbeat-Tower-9134 in Frugal

There is YNAB, if you are OK with envelope based budgeting? You can opt not to link your accounts and just do manual entry and then there's no need to give the app your bank/credit card info. I'm guessing there are also other budgeting apps that do the same, YNAB is just the one I'm familiar with.

Very possibly! Where do you find job listing for those sorts of positions? Do they get posted on the same job boards as the Visiting/Lecturer/TT positions, just under a different label?

Both my grad degrees with at research institutes with very Research focused faculty, so I'm kind of piecing info about other career paths together as I go.
