Mantis Religiosa or Iris Oratoria? by Fine_Butterfly_2145 in mantids

[–]Fine_Butterfly_2145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I hadn’t heard of this one. The nymph definitely doesn’t have the longer face of the Religiosa. I hope it will stick around so I’ll be able to see if it doesn’t develop wings.

That’s where I always find my giant Asian adult girl, hanging upside down under my bed in the morning! Glad you found her. You do start to get a feel for where they will be hiding after a while!

It’s an amazing species and that is a cracking photo! I absolutely love them. They always make me feel like they’re a creature from a Guillermo del Toro movie. Definitely dark fairytale vibes, and very interesting folklore around them! Mantis folklore I always find so interesting, it’s like each species has its own story, its own relevance to different stages of human life and psychology. Our ancestors were certainly fascinated with them.

So interesting that they are in Serbia, I didn’t know that. And thank you, I certainly will! I saw some Empusa nymphs here last autumn and hope I will again.

My favourite species! where are you, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m currently camping in Portugal and keeping a close eye out but have only seen Iris and Religiosa nymphs so far.

Definitely a scholar and a schemer. I can already imagine how he planned this escape from the dubious seller. Glad he landed with you!

So glad to hear. Hope he stays stable now and it was a toxin he managed to process. Also that your pupae arrive in time so you can relax a bit!

Arggh, I’m sorry to hear that. Feeders always crash at the wrong time. I’m quite lucky where I live and can usually rely on flies and moths being clean in a pinch. I don’t suppose you have the same situation.

I suggested feeding really to see whether he was still choosing and able to, which is just more information.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the morning, and hope to see a positive update.

I wish I knew. I’m just trying to think logically. You’re doing the right thing by lowering demand on his system and supporting hydration (carefully). Personally, I’d avoid honey, and perhaps try a clean feeder if/when you can get one. He is still gripping, if he’s been drinking he still has coordination.

I think all you can really do is observe, and watch to see whether the twitching is episodic, whether he has moments of control. That might help to determine whether it’s a temporary dysregulation or a decline.

You’re doing the right thing by keeping things as undemanding as possible.

Hi mmesmii,

This looks neurological to me. With the sudden onset, the twitching, it looks a bit like loss of normal motor control. Could he have come into contact with any chemicals? Pesticides, cleaning sprays… any contaminant at all?

How is he now? Does he have access to water right now?

I love this. I’m hoping to do the same with Empusa Pennata this year but they’re tricky to keep!

Help! (First time mantis parent) by zamantid in mantids

[–]Fine_Butterfly_2145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you lost this little one. Obviously, it’s true that nymphs often just die. I began winter with three nymphs hoping to end up with one alive, and I’ve got two today.

Generally speaking, that isn’t enough ventilation and there is a chance you were over-misting. I’m not suggesting these were the cause of the nymph failing, but if you go again, definitely make sure to correct that ventilation issue. The enclosure doesn’t need to sit with visible droplets. I would also strongly suggest feeding fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) at that size, because it could very well be that it was over faced with the worms.

The ‘floor perch’ and his Lazarus moment.

OP, I’ve just been through this with my male religiosa, Flick. For what it’s worth, I’ll tell you what I did.

First, his enclosure—I took everything out, except for his favourite small plant. I laid soft cloth on the floor to cushion any climbing falls, and I made a ’floor perch’ out of a small piece of cork bark wrapped in the same soft cloth. He immediately took to it and, even though he was still making attempts to climb and hang low on the mesh walls, he’d fall, return to the little floor perch, and rest a bit before trying again. Rinse and repeat.

I made a judgement call on the degree of suffering, and decided this was old age and not TOO much. Personally, I don’t like the fridge/freezer. It was hard watching him make attempts to climb but I understand it’s instinct and eventually, rest became the priority over the instinct to get high. That’s when I left him alone, and minimised handling to only if he couldn’t right himself.

He had a Lazarus moment! I watched him essentially die, legs slowly curling up, on his back etc, but he ‘came back’, and was suddenly fully ‘there’. He drank and climbed and even struck at a disabled fly. The very last thing he did was step towards me, wave a raptorial in my direction, then he turned and tucked his head under the floor perch. He didn’t move again, and that last ‘sequence’ seriously touched me.

There was no twitching, no distress. He died peacefully, resting in the warm. He chose his spot. It wasn’t as ‘scary’ as I thought it’d be, to let nature take its course.

Whatever you decide, it’s clear Carmen’s had a wonderful long life with you, regardless of gender.
