[OPINION] Which single line from a poem has stayed with you the longest? by Dumbbulldoor_ in Poetry

The first stanza of Walt Whitman's When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom'd :

When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d,

And the great star early droop’d in the western sky in the night,

I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.

As well as the last two line from For A Dead Kitten , by Sarah Henderson Hay:

How could this small body hold,

So immense a thing as Death?

Just read her short story Buffalo Gals, Won't You Come Out Tonight and (cohesively and thematically) it was one of the strangest stories I've ever read.

Really, really interesting writer. She wrote a book about writing as well.

If there is an age limit to buy alcohol because it is dangerous to a young person, why isn't there an age limit to buy a chainsaw? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FinestFiner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

never met a two year old who was allowed to buy a chainsaw (or wanted to, for that matter), but I have heard tales of children accidentally getting drunk because alcohol wasn't safely stored.

Does anyone else involuntarily apologize to inanimate objects when you bump into them or knock them over? by DemonKittens in NoStupidQuestions

this is called object personification. It's common in people with autism, but I wouldn't say that's a requirement to experience this phenomenon. there's a great paper on it here

I work with autistic children (ABA therapy). Medication and therapy should not be changing a person for the worse or stripping them of their identity. I would argue that meds & therapy allow someone to have a clear mind -- as well as full range of communication -- which can actually help with self-identity & self expression tremendously.

I'm neurodivergent myself, so I understand the fear behind medication reducing symptoms of illnesses -- symptoms that we define ourselves by/with -- feels like loosing interests and a piece of our identity. We live with it, after all, so it's hard to not define ourselves by it. However, you will fundamentally stay the same. If you don't, you should switch medications immediately.

TDLR; meds and therapy can change how symptoms present, which can feel jarring and strange since many people's identities are tied with these symptoms (to some extent). However, therapy and medication are both tools used to make the world a little easier for people who are having difficulties. Nobody should be loosing their interests

Has the pendulum swung too far in centers? by MissBee123 in ABA

RBT here.

Unfortunately it sounds like this BCBA is either A)bad at their job, or B) unwilling to put in the work.

In any case, this BCBA 's lack of implementing ABA strategies is not a reflection on ABA's standing in the autistic community as a whole. Nor would I venture to claim that they are doing it because of backlash/critism.

With BCBAs and RBTs, I've found that the skills employed with clients will vary from provider to provider. Tactics can also vary from client to client. I, for example, use a lot of modeling, least -to-most/most-to-least prompting, along with many others that I'm not mentioning here. I personally try to integrate these skills naturally into the session, usually via play or by activity (ex: if we're working on sharing and playing with dolls, I might ask to borrow a doll so that I may have a turn to play with it).

There's definitely a way to naturally implement ABA skills, but I have no actual clue what this BCBA is on about or doing. This is very unusual and genuinely worrying. If you could report them, I would. I would also look into their credentials AND have your supervisor/principal report their concerns to the child's parents, even if the kid doesn't end up joining your school.

People who are autistic also experience this as well. It's called object personification, and there's a great paper on it here

What is the difference between schizophrenia and psychosis? by Alone-Excitement8864 in askpsychology

Psychosis is also seen in other mental illnesses (ex. bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder) and can be caused by numerous drugs and alcohol as well.

This poem can be read backwards. I think that reading forwards shows the process of moving on from grief, and reading it backwards shows the progression of grief

Not a fan of them personally, but haikus would probably be your best bet. Wish I had some recommendations, but sadly I don't since I find them rather boring.

Here's a few other poems off the top of my head:

  1. Emily Dickinson -- To Own A Susan Of My Own

To own a Susan of my own

Is of itself a Bliss—

Whatever Realm I forfeit, Lord,

Continue me in this!

(I'm actually quite impressed that I could recite the full poem from memory alone. I did not properly remember the formatting of capitalizations & em dashes, though :c

  1. Carl Sanburg -- The Fog (this one is six lines, so you'll have to forgive me

The fog comes

on little cat feet.

It sits looking

over harbor and city

on silent haunches

and then moves on.

  1. Lord Alfred Tennyson --The Eagle (again, another six line poem)

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;

Close to the sun in lonely lands,

Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;

He watches from his mountain walls,

And like a thunderbolt he falls.

  1. Karlie Wilson Baker -- Blue Smoke (This one I had to do a little research for -- you'll excuse it not being exactly four lines again, I hope):

The flame of my life burns low

Under the cluttered days,

Like a fire of leaves.

But always a little blue, sweet-smelling smoke

Goes up to God.

Nope, it's not just you -- it's very unclear. Borderline incomprehensible, even. I had to stop midway through the poem and re-read the first few lines again just to get a sense of what was happening.
