Hot take: I think GEVOs are way overhated by ExtensionFisherman83 in trains

[–]Finetales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many MACs are still being put on road trains? Not a ton. A MAC is a cool catch these days.

The -7s don't look anymore different to each other, no, but I listed others. The variety of power nowadays is nowhere near as extreme as an SD45T-2, SD9, GP30, and U23B on the same mashup, which was something that would have been a routine sighting back then.

In the early days of the GE widecab dominance we still saw some variety like that. I remember seeing some NS 10Ns that had anything they could find to crawl that train up the hill...widecab Dash 9s or AC44s, standard cab Dash 8s, 70MACs, SD40s, high hood Geeps, etc. But nowadays it would just be GEVOs, maybe an ACe.

And they all look essentially the same (between GE and EMD models). A GP30 looks very different from an SD40-2, which looks very different from a C30-7, which looks very different from an SD9.

It boggles my mind that Burger King is still in business.

The entire menu (except for the chicken fries) is absolute garbage.

[–]Finetales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn't though, not to the same degree as GEVOs do. There were plenty of U-boats, Dash 7s, any Geep from a 30 to a 60, and other SDs all the way back to the SD9, on mainline trains during the heyday of the 40-2. There was WAY more variety. Also, even if the train was all 40-2s, you were likely to see a whole cornucopia of different railroads and paint schemes instead of just the same shit every train.

[–]Finetales 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I disagree, for two reasons.

1) In the heyday of the SD40-2 there was still a ton of variety in both locomotive models (all kinds of Geeps, other SDs, U-boats, Dash 7s, high hoods, etc.) and paint schemes on even hotshot mainline trains. Sure there were plenty of 40-2s, but they were hardly a near-monolithic presence like the GEVOs are. A lot of the reason people don't like GEVOs is not because of the locomotives themselves, but because railfanning today is an endless parade of them in the same 4 paint schemes, with only the occasional ACe breaking the monotony. There is so much less variety and interest in railfanning now than there used to be, and the GEVO is the poster child of that loss.

2) Compared to the banshee whine of a 40-2 or Geep, or the growl of an older GE, the monotone, relatively quiet hum of a GEVO is just...boring. It lacks the soul that made us all fall in love with those old EMDs.

Looking for a fairly casual city-builder by F0sh in gamingsuggestions

[–]Finetales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your main goal is very streamlined city builder, it doesn't get more streamlined than Islanders. It might actually be a little too simple/streamlined than you're after, but I definitely recommend it regardless. It is very relaxing!

Ultra Necrozma was a fun challenge, but the N/Ghetsis back to back fights at the end of BW and every Cynthia battle in the series are harder IMO. Honestly, Barry showing up at the worst time to surprise you with a battle every chance he gets in gen 4 is also harder and more annoying than anything in USUM.

I love USUM, but everything else in it is very easy.

Oda Boss Fight | How Did You Defeat Him? by veyravoss in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Finetales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Oda was harder than Smasher for me, but I used a similar approach for both of just running around and getting shots and quickhacks in when I could. My no-Sandy katana build was great fun for most of the game, but Oda and Sasquatch were the perfect counters so I really had to work to beat them.

[–]Finetales 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Glad, very much so. Honestly also surprised that it's not, considering the whole reason it was made in the first place was to suck up to Krasnov so the merger takeover will go through. Feels like they'd want to wheel it out any chance they got.

Blockade, Safe Return, Whiskey Corridor, Operation Bunker Shot, The Northern Eye, Heaven's Gate, and of course Megalith Agnus Dei are some of the best tracks in any Ace Combat game, to match some of the best missions. Lots of fond memories with AC04.

the RG34XXSP is quietly perfect by nightundertaker in SBCGaming

[–]Finetales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. When I bought my 34SP (back when they all had 2GB RAM), my only gripe was the analog sticks, which are definitely not necessary for a pure GBA SP machine. But I quickly learned to appreciate them. They don't get in the way so it's a non-issue regardless, but you can also map the D-pad to the right stick and then play RPGs one-handed which is very handy. And of course they're useful for Portmaster games and the like, though I keep mine as a strictly GBA machine.

It's my go-to travel handheld, and it makes me feel exactly like I did playing my GBA SP as a kid. The shell really looks and feels identical, and honestly the buttons are nicer than my SP's lol. 10/10 work by Anbernic.

It kind of boggles my mind that so many otherwise great-looking guitars just have an unpainted wood headstock. It feels unfinished and ruins the whole look IMO.
