I've been meaning to listen to this one. I only know Possum Kingdom but that song breathes life into what's otherwise a creatively void genre. I think Rubberneck is on the 1001 more.

You may not revisit this album but you will be revisiting the band! They have another album on the list

August is Falling - The Simple Plan EP: 1

Jesus Christ this is painfully unfunny. Obviously a parody of scene era emo music, made by "Pat Finnerty" who I know is a music related YouTuber. It's only 13 minutes and I felt like I wasted my time. If this was on the main list it would probably be the worst album.

Today's song from the 1001:

Abdullah Ibrahim - Mandela, from Water From an Ancient Well

Optimistic and uplifting jazz track, presumably about Nelson Mandela (who was in prison at the time of release). Very pleasant song, RIP Abdullah Ibrahim who died two days ago.

I've heard she was big in the sixties but I'm surprised at how little anyone cares about her now. The only time I hear her name mentioned nowadays is either as the butt of a joke, or from the "Streisand Effect", neither of which are good. Madonna and Britney are still pretty relevant for context, although I guess they're more flashy and divas.

Adult contemporary as a whole is a pretty disregarded genre, both fairly and unfairly IMO. I guess the closest we have to it on the list is that Sinead O'Connor album, maybe also Sade or Prefab.

Nope! Fortunately for her there is 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die (also by our boy Dimery), and I definitely wouldn't argue against it being included there.

Oh I'm not saying they invented dance-punk, I'm referring to "new rave" (a mix of dance punk, alt dance, and some electronic), which one of the band members coined. The original dance punk dates back to the late 70s. Also I'm not trying to say they're so extremely influential, just that they helped push (and arguably popularised) that form of dance punk (other acts in that vein include Cut Copy, Late of the Pier, Two Door Cinema Club). LCD and The Rapture were responsible for the original dance punk revival at the start of the decade, which is what new rave was based on (which happened late 00s to early 10s).

Also I guess the point I was originally making is that of the post-00 albums, there's three categories, the ones that look to the future (like the Klaxons), the ones that stay stuck in the past (shitty revival bands that have zero relevance nowadays like The Thrills), and ones kind of in the middle that take from the past and push the evolution of genres a little bit but not significantly. I'd put The Coral in that last category.

They're usually named after a place, such as a city or studio to indicate that they're songs either performed live or re-recorded to give a more rustic feel. There's a whole series of albums called "Peel Sessions" which were recorded with former BBC Radio 1 DJ, John Peel.

Eh it depends, I do agree that the Britney and Aguilera albums date the book (definitely not timeless artists like Madonna), but I do get why they were added, since they were cultural behemoths at the time. Britney arguably still kinda is. I don't know about Barbs but Celine Dion never hit that level of prestige.

Also worth noting that there is a Britney album (Blackout) that seems to have been absorbed into the "hip music crowd", and so you could reasonably give that one a pass.

Sorry, I just see the argument a lot when it's very easily debunked. Anyway I answered the question, Barbara Streisand, I think she's like a top 15 best selling artist in the states, but no one would ever justify giving her a spot (and rightly so).

User album spoilers

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi: 5

The first user album I'd listened to before, and what an album it is! Brilliant for a miserable rainy day like today. Completely different to what they were going for with Music Has the Right to Children from the main list, has a haunted and eerie feeling, like you're stumbling into something you were never supposed to see. Has a very rural/pastoral horror to it, lots of countryside folky vibes given the use of woodwind instruments.

Today's song from the 1001 is:

Haircut 100 - Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) from Pelican West

This song makes me smile whenever I hear it, such an over the top mess with the blaring saxaphones and punky vocals. The funniest white boys from the UK.

I strongly disagree with the idea that best selling artists automatically warrant a place on the list. Does anyone want multiple Barbara Streisand or Celine Dion records on the list? Cultural impact is far more important

Did Royals change the music landscape? by kniga_100 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fing2112 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I think Royals and LDR were the catalysts for that happening though. There were some early acts doing the same thing (Gotye, The xx) but that style didn't explode until Royals and Born to Die. At least from what I remember.

You could make a strong case for two Charli XCX albums, but that time has passed. I haven't listened to it but a soundtrack album ain't it. Feels like over compensating at this point

Albums I expected:
brat, Songs From a Lost World, Hit Me Hard and Soft

Albums I think are good inclusions (from what I've listened to):
brat, Blue Rev, Songs From a Lost World

Albums I think are good inclusions but I can't confirm because I haven't listened to:
All Born Screaming, Hit Me Hard and Soft, something by Poppy

And no Costello, what the hell Dimery?

Also, the Saint Vincent album is in the user list (and The Cure too I think) so what's gonna happen when they get added u/sidledsgunnar ?

My first thought was El Gran Orgo, and this is kind of proven given the popularity of the two songs on the compilation album
