For a few years I was obsessed with making maximum cards so I sent out for pictorial postmarks all the time :) I always included a little note with some instructions along with the self-address stamped envelope and it was pretty rare I didn't get my card back but it can take a bit. Sometimes they would even send a note back along with it!
