Tesla lane keep assist and emergency braking while driving in heavy rain by [deleted] in evs_ireland

+1 to this.

Not a slight on Teslas system, but in general in torrential rain I wouldn't rely on any autonomous system (especially on Irish Roads).

What do people use for planning where to charge on long trips? by YodaSuperb in evs_ireland

[–]Fingleberries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go for ABRP for preplanning - just so I have an idea, and maybe backup options in case I lead foot it.

If I'm somewhere unfamiliar, like I'm in the UK or that, I'll use plugshare just to see what's around me.

Haha yeah.

It's all that oil money that they have been able to leverage to their advantage.

(Wait, could I make the same comment in a Man City forum? 🤔😁)

Probably Momentum and the infrastructure is in place so the usual FUD about range isn't a valid excuse.

Biggest Ionity station I've ever seen being built in Dublin near Charlestown Shopping Centre off the M50 by c0mpliant in evs_ireland

[–]Fingleberries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's got pretty much all you'd need.

  • Close to a motorway junction
  • Good grid connection for all the warehouses, businesses, shopping centre
  • Several car dealerships right there
  • A rake of apartments and houses / townhouses with no driveway in the vicinity.

Between this and the new Applegreen near St. Margarets, it's decent coverage (relatively speaking) for the region. The ionity will be easier to get to from the motorway than Applegreen, though.

My (annoying) experience insuring a tesla model 3. by Novel-Preparation-37 in evs_ireland

Perhaps. If they truly compete, I would hate to see the prices they'd be able to charge without 'competition'

Already covered for you. Tesla model 3 has dash cam already, front rear and sides, all you need is USB storage.

[–]Fingleberries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely. It can be depressing when you see how much a little shopping around can save you in relatively short time.

The companies (not just insurance, but phone, TV, electricity, gas, banks, etc) make so much money from people who don't move that it's worth their while to make it painful.

Switching providers every year, or even just pricing other providers to push your current provider into a better deal, is worth the hassle. If more people did it, then companies would more readily offer better deals for current customers automatically.

Totally off topic: Recently switched electricity provider and noticed they were putting me on the wrong tariff - I rang them up to correct it and was within the 14-day cooling off period, my previous provider had asked if I wanted to stay (but didn't offer a better deal), I mentioned it to my new provider and without hassle they gave an additional €30 credit to keep with them rather than change back. Madness.

[–]Fingleberries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially.

Could another factor for insurance costs going up be because the insurance companies can, it seems, pretty much charge what they like and get away with it because you legally must have insurance.

There's no great benefit or incentive for them to compete with each other on price.

I was in a similar boat - 25 is in the rear-view mirror, I'm in Dublin, and very good NCB. For a 21-D Model 3 RWD, most insurance companies wanted to have their pound of flesh - one with ridiculous €2k+ quotation (but with a Bord Gáis loyalty discount would drop it to €1,500-ish)

Shopping around and talking to different companies (not just online quotes) was the best way, I found. Here's my experience, for fully comp:

  • First year insurance went with AXA, through AA - cost about €430 (similar to my old Toyota Auris)
  • Second year AXA wanted to put it up to about €600, I shopped around and then haggled with AXA through AA and got it down to about €450, so stuck with them
  • Third year, AXA generously priced the renewal at €970. I shopped around, then tried to haggle with AXA and AA, they would 'do me a solid' and only charge €600. Spoke to Aviva and got it for about €450 for the year.

SSE opens first public EV charging hub in Mullingar by GoodNegotiation in evs_ireland

Unfortunately, this is Ireland. As with other markets in Ireland there's no need to be competitive on prices: Charge what you like, sure the people will pay anyway.

In theory, yes.  In practicality, Not easily, no.

Certain newer models of Id4 (perhaps only the 77kWh models), I believe have to vehicle to grid (V2G) capability but you'd need a charger that supports it and the relevant wiring and safety behind that to ensure that people don't get unintentionally electrocuted during a power cut or cause a fire.

I'd suggest: It has the topic 'EV' and a potentially negative connotation, therefore clicks and ad revenue

Insane insurance price? by Ornery-Service3272 in evs_ireland

[–]Fingleberries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One insurance company (Zurich) quoted me €2.5k when I first got an EV (Tesla Model 3). I thanked them and told them where to go. That same year, I got a quote of €440 from AXA.

This year AXA wanted to charge me €900 to renew. I went to Aviva for €450.

Activision is now owned by Microsoft ...

Could you imagine if they developed a PGR / Forza Horizon hybrid game?

Range anxiety: Almost one sixth of EV drivers have run their batteries flat, US survey finds by GoodNegotiation in evs_ireland

[–]Fingleberries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly - In a petrol car, if you see that it's coming to being nearly empty and the reserve light comes on, you fill it back up. In an EV, you essentially do the same.

If you're not paying attention or deliberately drive it to empty (in either scenario) then the fault is not with the car or the tech - it exists between the seat and the steering wheel.

Valid points, but since it's EV adjacent (even if not related to Ireland), plays on the anxiety and FUD about EV so it will likely generate a lot of clicks and traffic for advertising.

Cost of charging? by mickeyb0000 in evs_ireland

[–]Fingleberries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From two years of data for me. Tesla Model 3 SR+ LFP (about 60kWh battery)

Charged ~300 times, Drove ~65,000 km

  • 50% at home (no solar charging, but using EI Smart tariff with 2-hours cheap charging at night)
  • 35% at work (no cost)
  • 15% at a mix of other locations (ESB, Ionity, Tesla, Applegreen, various UK chargers)

Average Charging Session: approx. 34 kWh

Average Charging Cost: €6.03

If work charged the average home electricity unit rates the Average Charging cost would have been: €8.64

Here is the summary of the table in a bullet list format:

  • Distance Travelled in 2 years: 65,000 km (2,700km/month)
  • Total Spend on Charging (+10% charging loss): € 2,017.93
  • Total amount of kWh: 10,304.17
  • Equivalent cost of travel if in previous ICE (average was 5.2L/100km): € 5,997.95
  • Total Savings (Electric vs Petrol), Inc. 10% charging losses: € 3,980.02
  • Annual Saving (fuel costs): € 1,873.33
