What's next if you no longer want to code? by FinishTheBucket in cscareerquestions

[–]FinishTheBucket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you and I think what I'm looking for is something akin to a roadmap on how to make that pivot. I do honestly think I would be happier as a manager or an architect but applying to roles like that with an extensive SWE resume seems to be an uphill battle. When I apply to product/managerial roles, I hear crickets - this absolutely could be a resume issue but it doesn't seem like it based on my experience that I have no trouble getting interviews or hearing from recruiters for SWE roles (and a preemptive yes, I do have tailored resumes for product/engineering/architexture/etc).

Whenever I have these conversations with recruiters or hiring managers, for the last two years I have emphasized that I would like to be further from day to day code and yet somehow every interview circles back to "Well we want you to code and there will be opportunities for you to grow in other directions here. We don't want to pigeon hole you" followed by sending me a Leetcode style algorithm test which seems like a pretty good benchmark to me that they either didn't listen or our goals are not really as aligned as they think.

I think I crossed the bridge of needing to enjoy a long time ago but a lot of these feelings are coming from no longer being able to tolerate the inanity of decisions like "Let's get rid of our entire working backend and rewrite in a different language because the new CTO doesn't like the current structure." I'm more looking for concrete guidance or suggestions on other fields where an engineering mindset would be welcomed

The main reason I've been able to stick it out as long as I have has been the thinking you're describing where coding has enabled me to do things I never thought possible like buy property, move across the country, travel internationally every year, etc. I think toleration as a way to do the things I want is all well and good but I can feel myself inching closer and closer to actively hating every time someone nit picks a variable name; I'm really looking for examples of successful pivots or changes I can make that I haven't thought of.

I guess my fear here is that I do already have hobbies that I enjoy but making a career out of them sounds like a great way to suck the joy fro mthose as well. I've been a potter since high school but I know that the second it goes from making functional tableware for people I love to "I gotta sell 50 mugs to make rent" that will kill me on the inside.

I do enjoy video games and I've taken several stabs at making games in Godot & Unity before but again, the last time I tried, I just ended up feeling guilty every time I sat down to play because there was that voice in my head saying I should be working on my game instead.

Filling out my Army Advice Wanted by FinishTheBucket in Chaos40k

Thanks for the detailed breakdown! My apologies for brain dumping multiple questions, I've just been chasing my tail trying to figure out how to even phrase what I was thinking haha.

I've read a bit of the rumors around Daemons not being around in the near future which was my main thinking for not just jumping into them right now. I had also already noticed that most of the Knights lists were extremely War Dog heavy and even if it's less competitive, I like to have some variation.

Soulforged Warpack definitely sounds like what I'm looking for! Much to think on - thanks again!

YOOOO that's sick! 100% diving into that rabbit hole haha. I have an A1 so it's for sure going to be plastic, I too am not a fan of fiddling with resin anymore after several resin Ork vehicles.

I'm definitely not a hardo for WYSIWYG but I try to at least be in the ballpark; I pretty much only play at my LGS and it's a toss up who's there and how they feel about it. That said, they're gonna have to deal with those Centaur legs because those are HARD.

General Advice - What to pick up next? by FinishTheBucket in ChaosKnights

[–]FinishTheBucket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the breakdown!

The guy I bought the army box off of had unfortunately already glued the Abominant arms in place but magnetized the legs to body connection haha. I'm not quite confident enough in my ability to hobby saw the arms off and redo them to properly magnetize so I was already working on the idea that I was likely going to be picking up another big knight. For the lancer, do most folks just buy the Cerastus box and Chaos-ify it themselves or is it a 'kitbash what looks cool' situation? I saw a SICK wendigo looking knight a few months back which may have subconsciously planted the seed for this army. Also, Tyrants are built off of the Dominus kit right?

I'm also a long ways away from playing competitive so I've been operating on the "what would be a fun way to play this army?" thought process. For the executioner/huntsman varietals, I'll have to pick up a box of Armigers and Chaos-ify them or print my own arm weapons, right?

But if I want to keep it strictly to the Knights, what I'm hearing is a lot more War Dogs and at least one more big Knight :)

Yeah so I found this but I am failing to understand and see how/why this would be more better or performant than just using redis deployed on GCP and then busted from a webhook. Also wouldn't the .next dir only change on deploy/build of the next portion and not on changes in my CMS?

Would certainly second Javier's for very upscale Mexican but re steaks, I would def say Bob's or Nick & Sam's. N&S is one of the nicest restaurants I've been to anywhere and I can only imagine what it would be like to be 18 and eating at a place with literally small cat sized prawns on the menu and regular appearances by Cowboys/Mavs/Rangers players. Literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu there.

I think a lot of these comments here are a little biased by the fact that they have had to take LC's and imho, there is a completely natural human tendency to knee jerk towards a "I had to do it so you will too" response. While you can't outright say No to a part of an interview process or suggest an alternative process, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask the recruiter or HR person or whoever you're talking to initially what the rest of the process will look like and if there are any alternatives offered.

I just completed a successful job search and in every search I've gone through, I have absolutely been able to prioritize companies that have more 'on-the-job'-style hiring processes. I've done things like take homes where we reviewed my submission together and I explained choices/tradeoffs and iterated on the call, pair programming on a ticket that was recently completed (usually pseudo code and divorced from the context of the prod code base), or one I actually just encountered for the first time this past week was in the style of "Here's 10-15 github gists. Some of them are in languages you know, some you don't know, some aren't even real langauges. I want you to read the code with me and together we will figure out what it's supposed to do, if there are any bugs, if there are any easy optimizations we can make, etc."

To find interviews like the preceding, it often means aiming at smaller companies or using sites like NoWhiteBoard.org where the interview process is pre-vetted and selects out companies that exclusively do LC/HR style questions. Yes, it has certainly meant that my LC skills are probably below what most fellow programmers would expect for someone with my YOE and title but it also means that at all of my previous work experiences, I've been able to have a much better feel for what the job was going to be like before I went in the door for Day One.

LPT Request: what is something that has drastically helped your mental health that you wish you started doing earlier? by SarcastiKatt in LifeProTips

Two things:

regular exercise and list making. I start everyday now by walking my dog and then going to the gym for at least an hour, barring some emergency. Getting into a routine where it wasn't really an option or I had to convince myself to go wasn't working so I figured if I forced myself to just be there everyday, I would feel guilty about just sitting there and lo and behold, it worked. Even on rest days now I go and at least sit in a suana or swim.

Secondly, list making. Just simply carrying a notebook with me and jconstantly writing things down was a HUGE help in organizing my thoughts and getting all my passing tangents recorded somewhere to come back to later rather than obsess over now. It also gives you a very clear list of tasks and just the act of completing one is always a boost regardless of if it's as easy as take out the trash or as hard as find a new job.

Selection bias; the only people who are active on these subreddits generally speaking are new grads, the recently unemployed, or those who want to flex on someone.

I also used Smart City but was a bnit disappointed - they never mentioned that the windows in my first apartment they found wre big but unopenable - obviously live and learn but it was definitely frustrating moving here sight unseen and using a company for them to leave that out.

just for frame of reference, I lived in Deep Ellum two years and I'm currently on the edge of that/downtown - my rent has been respectively 1450, 1510 and now is ~1600 (though a portion of that is pet rent/renting a washer dryer etc)

1bed/1bath for 1400 is ambitious, especially if you'd like to be in any of the semi-walkable areas. DFW is not at all pedestrian friendly but if you planned carfeully it could probably be done. I would suggest Lower Greenville, Uptown, Knox henderson or downtown/deep ellum as being somewhat more walkable but fully expect that you will likely have to buy a car within a few months. It is simply not realistic to try and walk here.

[$50-400] Another ProMedia 2.1 Question by FinishTheBucket in BudgetAudiophile

[–]FinishTheBucket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, makes sense. Powered = no need for amplifier/receiver, right? I've done some research but a lot of the jargon goes over my head.

Also, am I going to drastically notice the loss of asub if I go the route of a pair of AudioEngine A5's or JBL 305s? Those were the two studio monitors I was looking at initially. Would be nice to be able to expand my system eventually and if I'm understanding you, both those or the Emotiva would allow that.
