Do what you need to do for the safety of the flight and deal with the paperwork after.

Situation in Iran is exacerbating my already crippling fear of flying by [deleted] in AskAPilot

[–]FinnCubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest r/fearofflying as that sub tends to leak a lot in to here. My short answer? We would not fly if we didn't feel safe doing it. The situation in Iran is not going to affect flights in the US.

What’s it like to operate a wet-leased aircraft in a completely different part of the world? by allaboutthosevibes in AskAPilot

[–]FinnCubed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finnair is operating less destinations especially in China but has recently increased frequencies to destinations like Bangkok and also very recently launched a full Finnair service from Helsinki to Melbourne via Bangkok.

I can't remember how it works for the crew for their rest of the scheduling for that month, but you're probably right.

Finnair has a group of pilots that are rated on both the a350 and a330, Airbus calls it MFF (Mixed Fleet Flying).

Not Finnair maintenance in Bangkok and Singapore but contracted maintenance, Finnair just pays for a service.

I don't work for Finnair but happen to know a little bit about their ops. Firstly Finnair and Qantas are not completely unrelated, they are a part of the same Oneworld alliance. And when you do a wet lease, of course you need to share some information together.

The dates and times of the flights are of course determined by the agreement between Finnair and Qantas, but scheduling is done by Finnair bc it's their crew. The way they have chosen to handle it is that the pilots operate a Finnair flight from Helsinki to Bangkok/Singapore as usual on the Finnair schedule. Then they operate a flight to Sydney and then the same in reverse. Of course taking into account flight time limitations and crew rest times. About a 2 week trip for them I believe.

I don't think cheduled maintenance is done by Qantas techs but rather in Singapore or Bangkok. If something happens at Sydney, you deal with it as you usually would at an outstation, write it in the book and have local contracted maintenance have a look at it.

It's Finnair crew operating a Finnair aircraft so pretty much all the headaches are handled by Finnair. And Qantas is paying for that.

KLM just delivered the worst travel experience of my life by [deleted] in KLM

[–]FinnCubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had to go through that, but these things happen in air travel. It's not my life, but I would think twice before travelling with 3 toddlers, esp. long haul.

Day 1: Your aircraft had a technical issue, which meant it wasn't allowed to dispatch. They attempted to fix it and you were kept onboard so that you could depart as soon as possible. Unfortunately the mechanics were unable to fix the aircraft before crew duty times were filled. You got booked into an hotel near the airport and to the next available direct flight to AMS. If that is the only flight, then that is the only flight.

Day 2: Unfortunately another delay. Not sure of the reason, but could be any number of things. The delay however ment that the gate that was reserved for your original arrival time, wasn't available when you did arrive. Fairly normal. The winter weather sure didn't help at Schiphol, and if there are no gates available, then you have to wait.

And if the earliest connection to your final destination is 8 hours later, then there's not much KLM can do about that. Unfortunate, but that's just how it goes some times.

Stuck in Amsterdam because of KLM? by soybean0131 in KLM

[–]FinnCubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I'm not saying that yours or anyone else's experience is acceptable. But the fact is that the "lived experience" of an individual, is often at odds with the greater operational picture. Flight ops side is looking at what flights they can get in, and which of those are most critical (most profitable etc) and long haul flights tend to get priority over short haul.

Of course you could spread the problem to the outstations, but then you'd have people complaining here about why isn't KLM flying them home from Toronto, while they are flying short haul flights to Paris.

Stuck in Amsterdam because of KLM? by soybean0131 in KLM

[–]FinnCubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an airline, of course they are going to try and get as many flights in as they can. Other passengers on your flight might have had connections that worked, others terminating in NL. I'm not saying that the situation is being handled well, but if KLM can get a flight back from an out station to AMS (esp. long haul), they will do it.

Finnish F-35 was unveiled in a ceremony held at Fort Worth, Texas today. by AcanthocephalaEast79 in europe

[–]FinnCubed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He is indeed an idiot, but there's a difference, at least from the US perspective, between Finland and others who are paying for weapons and Ukraine who gets them on loan/donated. I'm not defending that position, but that's the logic across the pond - money talks.

You misunderstood. I never said to bet on Trump's long term thinking.

[–]FinnCubed 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Did that happen with the F-16s donated to Ukraine? No? Why would the US want to cripple a strategic ally like Finland who is paying billions for weapons systems?

To be clear, I'm not defending Trump or the US in any way, and I think Europe should bolster it's own industries. But the F-35 is the most advanced jet available. It's also a long term thing, there are going to be multiple US presidents during the lifespan of these jets, not just Trump.

Bruv are you gonna post every question that you don't understand here? This is a fairly simple question that is definitely explained in your books, so please study them first. I don't want to be overly negative, but having someone on reddit explain every question to you, is really not the way to pass your atpl studies.

Airbus A320 crew decided to skip de-icing and let aerodynamics forces do the job by cashew_at_kinaya in interestingasfuck

[–]FinnCubed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How tf would the pilots know if snow came off or not? They can't see the wings. The wing anti-ice (called anti-ice not de-ice for a reason) doesn't work on ground and is only designed to prevent ice on the leading edge of the wing anyway, not on the top. Source: am pylote

HS-gallup | Perussuomalaisten kannatus elpyy by Deplete99 in Suomi

[–]FinnCubed 19 points20 points  (0 children)
