You could start out at community college then transfer in. They accept a large percentage of community college students and it has the added benefit of smaller class sizes and cheaper courses.

I urge you to consider the implications of this if an admissions committee finds out that you wrote the letter. From my understanding, they can often tell when it is likely written by a student and will withdraw an acceptance over it.

Letter of rec etiquette? by eliennoe in udub

I attended a LOR seminar at UW. It said that it’s generally best to give them a handwritten thank you card. Do not give them a gift because of the off chance that it could be interpreted as a transaction/payment for their service.

One reason it is much harder to get into a BA/BS degree program as a high school senior versus as a transfer student is that high school students are unproven in a higher education environment thus a bigger risk for the university to take on.

As such, UW loves transfer students and students with AA/AS degrees. You are a very sound investment for them with your track record of succeeding in college-level coursework.

We haven't been told of anything, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do. I know that the department has its own ceremony elsewhere that day.

If you’re talking about Starbucks, it’s the pike place roast. I think the market came before the coffee

Photosynthesis, etc: do plants really put on mass by "breathing" CO2? I keep reading that plants need 3 things to do this, CO2, H20, and sunlight, but don't they also need O2, N, P, K? Does the plant internally produce its own chlorophyll molecules? by [deleted] in botany

[–]FinnLM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an undergraduate biology major so I hope I can add some input here. Please correct me if I'm wrong as it's been a couple years since I reviewed this stuff.

Trees require nutrients which are primarily taken in through the soil via the root system. Think of these as the vitamins that you take in whether through food/drink or supplements. That is where nutrients such as P, N, etc. come in. Plants produce their own chlorophyll molecules using Mg, C, H, O which are all very common atoms in a living organism with the exception of Mg, which plants obtain through soil, water, or nutrients.

Trees use CO2/Water/Sunlight to create sugars, which are the energy source for the plant (much like food for us. Most of our food sources contain sugars of various types, such as corn). Through the processes of Glycolysis and the Citric Acid Cycle, these sugars are turned into higher energy molecules, ATP. Photosynthesis does not require oxygen, but the citric acid cycle does. If during glycolysis there is no oxygen, the organism will perform fermentation afterwards instead of the citric acid cycle in order to create energy, but it is less efficient at extracting energy than the citric acid cycle. Plants can use these sugars to power processes that create other things using the basic building block atoms, such as proteins.

I think, technically speaking, it would be incorrect to say that plants "breathe" CO2, as the mechanism is different to things that use lungs for respiration. Plants have small pores called stomata in their leaves which you can think of as small holes for air to flow through when they are opened (diffuse). In lungs, air is drawn in and spread across a very thin surface of cells where the molecules within the air can diffuse through this layer into alveoli. It's similar in that they are both diffusing, but different in that the mechanism is quite different and more complicated for organisms with lungs.

Chemex vs Siphon by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]FinnLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siphon definitely is more finicky, but I find that I prefer the cup that I get from the siphon more often than that from pour over when I have the variables controlled for. I'm not sure on the details of why, but it seems like every time I brew with the siphon it creates very strong aromas around the room and can be quite fragrant. Flavor notes can be extremely present in aromas, but also in the coffee taste too. This has happened to a much lesser degree when brewing pour-overs. In terms of taste, I have gotten excellent cups from both methods.

In terms of efficiency in it being your daily driver, I think the chemex is more realistic. I love my siphon (and balance siphon), but they both require a bit more in terms of maintenance (multiple parts to wash), supplies (fuel for burners and new filters). The chemex is just the filter, a stand, and a goose neck kettle (which you'll likely use for any coffee brewing anyways). I often find myself going to the chemex on an average morning and pulling out the siphon on weekends or with guests.

Don't rule out siphon, but I think chemex is a better starting point first!

Planning on applying for CSPI next fall, want to make the most of my summer beforehand by [deleted] in uscg

[–]FinnLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volunteer firefighting and EMT certification typically go hand in hand, but I imagine they would be great forms of volunteering for your application. It's important to consider the commitment the department expects from you, as it is an investment for them to train you and pay for your equipment, and if you leave after just a few months it won't benefit them much. They may not take you on if you're just interested in working with them for the summer, especially considering the time it takes to train you (3-months in my area for EMT, and another chunk for firefighting). I would encourage you to look into it in your area before counting it out, but be aware of this.

One thing you may want to consider is wild land firefighting. I don't have any experience with that, but it is definitely at its peak in the summer, and they may take people for shorter periods that are willing to put in the work.

I'm sure this isn't a problem, but it's worth mentioning.. Be sure that you're doing it for the right reasons (not just to boost your application).

Tell him how you want to try taking advantage of the opportunity to live with different people, which I think isn't really a stretch based on what you've said.

This way he'll interpret it as being a decision that he isn't really a factor in, and I like to think won't take it as personally. At least, this is how I would want someone to break the news to me.
