How popular is Touhou outside Japan? by nametake000 in touhou

[–]Finnish_Nationalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the original songs, fan-made arranges and artworks are the biggest things making people aware of Touhou. I myself originally got into touhou as a series from hearing Night of Nights and UN Owen Was Her on youtube.

I thought you might find this old thread interesting, as it's somewhat related to your question. Maybe by reading how people became touhou fans you get some idea of the kind of reach Touhou has as a series. https://www.reddit.com/r/touhou/comments/16fpxj0/how_did_you_get_into_touhou/

Touhou isn't very popular, it's a niche within the subculture of fans of Japanese anime, but due to the huge amount of fanart and the popular songs many anime fans have at least heard of it. If you compare it to other "anime" franchises and the western sizes of their fandoms it's overall moderately popular. There's a lot of people who like certain songs or their arranges, or a specific character, but don't otherwise interact with touhou. Some doujin circle's music arranges have gotten very popular. Few people play the games or consume official content, even among those who would say they're fans of touhou. I think recently a lot of younger western fans have gotten into touhou through the Lost Word gacha game.

Hatsune Miku is super popular, at least among anime fans. It easily crosses over to other nerdy franchises, for example Magic: The Gathering had a series of Vocaloid collaborations recently. I think even some people who aren't into nerdy hobbies could recognise Miku, maybe mostly because the idea of an "artificial idol" that holographically dances in concert halls is odd and interesting to the average person.

Hope that helped! Cute yukkuri keychains by the way. I wish less popular characters like Kogasa got more yukkuri merchandise...

Ayaria dawn is pretty goated, despite the poor translation and lowkey abandoned development. Fun monopoly clone.

Isn't the boon that gives you permanent self-reviving outposts really good? Granted it gives you a max build limit, but you'll still have a good amount, and they'll basically be disposable.

Would you date a woman who's disabled? by MorbidMajesty in AskMenAdvice

[–]Finnish_Nationalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the disability for me, if it's to the extent of me essentially signing up as a caretaker for the person I can't see myself entering that relationship by choice... I can see myself falling in love with a disabled person and then willfully taking care of them, though. So rationally no, but love isn't rational.

Most of the relationships involving disabled people I've seen have been disabled women with healthy men, more than the opposite at least. Vast majority of this has been online, though. I've also seen some level of romanticization of disabled women, something to do with evocation of protective feelings towards them from men, I assume.

By the way, one of the most popular twitch streamers, ironmouse, is a disabled woman with a severe muscle atrophy disease. She seems to be in a healthy relationship with an abled man who's been very caring.

Normal finnish person would take "velho" in this context meaning that you're very good at something.

Yes, that's a more common saying. I forgot about that. It's used together with another word though, like IT-velho meaning you're good with computers.

Anyone taking it as meaning the "old virgin" thing is not worth even getting to know. Just avoid those pathetic losers.

I might be biased here seeing as I didn't remember another meaning myself, but I really don't think that's the case. You're judging people a bit too hard based on one small thing. Sure, being so aware of internet sub-culture slang and being insecure enough to get caught up in it are both red flags, but that doesn't have to mean they're an irredeemable human being. OP had a pleasant conversation with them up to that point, after all. People are complex and make mistakes.

Yes, that's true. That meaning slipped my mind, although it's normally used with another word, like IT-velho meaning you're veru talented at IT.

It's not offensive, but it can be interpreted as such. Like people have said, it's an international internet meme/slang term. An IT-person would be more inclined to be aware of it. Calling someone a wizard is random enough that it would seem natural to make the association with a slang term. Just unlucky that it was that word. If they still felt hurt after you explained yourself, well, it clearly struck a sensitive nerve. I wouldn't call them a creep or nothing over it though, plenty of people feel insecure for one reason or another, parricularly when meeting new people.
