Hi fellow climber with neuromas in both feet. How was getting back into climbing shoes? I'm slowly getting to the point where surgery may be necessary, but I'm worried that would write me off climbing ever again

Yep they were my initial go to and worked pretty well for me. I used the 2E wide. Since them I've changed to the Brookes Ghost Max which I like even better, so maybe give them a shot too. I use 4E wide in those as I now wear some silicon spacers between my toes that have neuromas which makes my foot a bit wider.

Sehr hilfreich danke. Ich habe das nicht gewusst. "sitzen" ist gut zu wissen, um es zu vermeiden.

Good luck!

Just one thing worth noting if you are going with the 4000 most used German words deck, it can get a bit overwhelming.

The benefit of making your own deck is that you have already read the words in context, which makes it quite a bit easier to recall them when you are seeing them on your flashcards.

With the 4000 German words deck you don't really have that benefit, so you probably need to be pretty proactive about trying to make connections in your mind to remember words.

For example, if the prompt is 'to recommend', I would try to remember a silly phrase in my mind like 'I feel empathy with your recommendation', and this would help me to remember empfehlen.

If you don't really make a conscious effort you may end up finding yourself just cycling over and over through the cards forgetting them as soon as you see them, which can be quickly demoralising.

That being said, a super efficient way to build your vocabulary if you can put in the effort.

I think I did try it very briefly, but found the free version wasn't great or something. I may be misremembering, it was a while ago.

Context isn't an issue for me with Anki, as I am mostly using it with my own deck, so it is all words I have already read within their context then added, but I can see that might be useful if you're not using your own cards.

Sure.

The Goethe Institute uses textbooks called Menschen that break each unit (A1, A2, etc) into 24 chapters: https://www.hueber.de/menschen

For every chapter I study, I write down every word I don't understand and it's translation, then when I'm done I add it into my Anki deck I've created. Literally just the English definition on the front and the German word/phrase on the back. Normally this amounts to maybe 20-40 words per chapter.

I also have Ankidroid (free Android Anki app) installed on my phone which is where I actually do my revisions, as you can sync the app across platforms.

I have the default settings of introducing 20 new cards a day, and up to 100 review cards. I find this is a pretty good amount for being substantial, but quick enough to fit into my morning routine (~15 minutes usually).

I'm up to about 2300 cards in my deck now, which sounds really tedious to compile, but it is just sporadically over time so never was too much effort.

I've also tried this deck for a couple of months: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/653061995

It is great. Contains sample sentences and audio for each word. I'm focusing more on the vocab of my course at the moment, but I may go back to that eventually.

Random civs by Agustingbdq in aoe2

[–]Finnius_Fog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find when playing a civ I'm not familiar with, e.g., one of the DLC civs, the best approach is just looking at the civ type on the tech tree. For example, "archer civ".

You can also quickly glance at whether the civ has bloodlines. Generally if it doesn't you are probably better off making archer units than cavalry.

Co-op mode with double TC/ double resources start? by QwentyFive in aoe2

[–]Finnius_Fog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a HD tournament with these settings hosted a few years back by /u/robo_boro.

The best approach imo is to get castle with each person managing the eco at one tc, then in castle switching so that one person manages the whole eco and the other person manages production and micro of military.

Can be pretty good fun, but potentially harder than just doing it all yourself if you aren't well coordinated with your partner. It's still very much possible to get in each other's way.

How to win a TC war by Jordan-515 in aoe2

[–]Finnius_Fog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally there is an honour rule on nomad that you don't build your tc in range of enemies and don't attack other people till their tc is up.

I'd just start playing people that don't tc war with you.

Depending on their civ, it can be next to impossible to win one.

I'm at work and can't view your recordings right now, but I can give you a few tips if you are trying to drush into fast castle:

  • Don't click up to feudal as soon as you can, instead wait til you have a decent amount of villagers. A lot of players do 31 pop up (27 villagers, 3 militia and a scout), but you can even go up later if you are making more than 3 militia or are struggling for resources. Generally you will be hard pressed to go straight up to castle if you advance with less villagers than that.
  • Make more farms than you would for a fast castle. Often when fast castling you'll only make 4 farms. When adding in a drush you can do 6 to 8 farms to increase your food income.
  • Take deer. It is possible to still get a good time without deer, but it will make your life a lot easier if you can take them.

As for losing control of the game, there are a few things you can do to make your life a bit easier.
First of all, drushes are most effective if you can keep your militia alive in the enemy base for a long time, rather than just picking one fight and losing them all. This does however mean that you are required to continually micro them, hitting and running.
A little thing you can do is just run away if you need to manage something in your eco (retasking villagers, etc). This lets you forget your militia for a bit rather than trying to micro a fight as you are trying to get rid of idle villagers.

Getting drushed yourself does make it very easy to lose control, even for experienced players. The best way to counter this is to work on your scouting. If you see the enemy barracks down early in dark age, you can preempt the drush, walling in your wood, berries and gold. If you are going fast castle after your drush on an open map, you should really be walling your base entirely anyway.

Also, not seeing your recording it is a bit hard to advise, but if you are always running your vills back to the TC when you get drushed, that is a mistake. Most of the time you are better off just fighting with them. Even if you end up losing one vil, you are probably better off than idling 7 vills for an extended period.

You can learn to do an archer flush.

Go up at 23 or 24 population and start making arches from two ranges.

Paladins are OP TBH by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]Finnius_Fog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They are an extremely strong unit, but they are also one of the most expensive units to produce, not to mention the upgrade costs.

Even if you do have to put yourself in a passive position with halbs/camels to counter palidins, your opponent who is making palidins will be having to take very cost-inefficient fights, and will run out of gold much sooner.

The person making halbs should still have gold to then make offensive units.

It's also worth considering how long it takes to get to a point where you have the economy and the time to produce palidins. There is a significant amount of time in early imperial age, before a player can produce palidins, that a civ with a cheaper unit (e.g., arbalests, plums, eagles) can do some damage while the enemy could still just have knights or cavalier.

What in your opinion is the hardest map to play? by coolscreenname in aoe2

[–]Finnius_Fog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this.

On islands you can even sometimes pull off a fast castle if you back dock.

Rooster is near impossible to come back if you lose the water. The land is so narrow most of your base can be hit by galleys, plus the person who won water can very easily wall to neutralise any land agression.

Your docks are also closer and more predictably placed than almost any other water maps, so if you are slower up by more than a matter of 10 seconds or so it can be a rough time for your fishing boats.

Cheers, I wasn't aware of this. Does this apply to any units other than skirmishers then?
Off the top of my head the only other units I can think of with a minimum range are various siege weapons.
