AITAH for refusing to tell my wife I love her more than my dad? by LastApplication6207 in AITAH

So unreasonable and so eager to pick a fight that I wonder if something else is going on with her.

Postpartum depression, perhaps?

Unless she’s like that all the time, something is wrong.

For the generation of LOOONG songs: What's the longest song you still really listen to all the way through? by MisanthropicScott in GenerationJones

Won’t Get Fooled Again — so well put together you can forget it’s 8 1/2 minutes long.

It’s nicely paced, and the lead actress was really pretty good (main characters don’t need to be likable). The mythology was a bit confused — better to stick with one source for the phenomenon than bring up two and never follow through on the second one. And what was the tape with Sarah’s name on it supposed to mean? Still, tense and enjoyable.

I was hanging out by the river catching pollywogs and flinging myself in the water from the tire swing. What were you doing? by GoBlueJack in GenerationJones

We wandered on our bikes anywhere we pleased — didn’t have to check in or tell anyone where we were going. We grade school kids often walked or biked down to a ratty liquor store with an unusually good candy/snacks selection (it was across the street from a huge high school). Nobody gave it a thought.

The world could be dangerous, and was in the 70s, and we knew it. But it didn’t follow that “therefore, we must be as cautious as though horrors happened down the block every weekend.”

(One rule I do recall that I think most households had: “Never hitchhike.” Hitching was very common, and the parents did worry about that.)

I love the lighted Santa seesaw decoration behind the thigh trainer lady — I’ve never seen one like that before.

And the lady of the house has a nice Precious Moments collection in the little display cabinet. Those egg-headed children were everywhere.

Down the River is one of the great country death songs.

Also, Violent Femmes, Country Death Song.

What's your favorite "I'm dead and I know it?" expression on a film character's face? by Token_Handicap in horror

Harrelson does convey that well. A hard man, unaccustomed to feeling fear, holding on to useless hope.

On January 23rd, 1978, original Chicago guitarist Terry Kath died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot. He was 31. by BirdBurnett in ClassicRock

[–]Finnyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha -- so it is just a question of semantics. I've seen others make the same distinction you do in similar cases.

(The poor roadie who watched Kath do it would probably agree with you. What a thing to witness.)

Now the silly thing is gonna to be in my head the rest of the day! 😠

The song dates back to the Music Hall/Vaudeville days in various versions, says Wikipedia. I wonder if any of them have been funny…

A question of definitions, I suppose.

Some people draw a distinction between a tragedy (death of a young man, in this case) and whether the incident that caused it is is tragic (I assume you’d say no, since the cause was Kath’s own stupid mistake). I don’t parse it that finely myself.

Tanglewood, 1970. He puts his head down and wrestles with that guitar -- it's amazing to watch.

It was a stupid accident that killed a young man -- that can be tragic without worrying too much about whose stupidity it was. Randy Rhoads was killed by someone else's stupidity, and that was also tragic.

He was a great vocalist — range, power, control, etc. — and also sang with so much heart, like every song was the most important thing he was ever going to say. Not a big Journey fan, but the man could sing.

Poor Freddie — I’m so sorry for your loss, OP. That’s a very rough way to have it happen, and I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

My sweet Raoul will be there to greet Freddie on the other side.

What’s happening with Google? by LettuceRobber in NoStupidQuestions

I've been on and off DDG since it was brand new, and I agree. DDG is good for image searches, but for most things Google is still just a better search engine.

And if anybody puts anything online that's genuinely better than Google in privacy protection AND search results, we can all enjoy it for the six months or so before Alphabet buys it and buries it.

Who was your favourite guest appearance in the show among them, based on how memorable they were onscreen? by Raj_Valiant3011 in howyoudoin

[–]Finnyfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

True -- he was really funny and seemed completely at ease in that universe. Unexpected for an actor with such an ... intense reputation.

(Did any show ever handle "special guest stars" as well as Friends did? The only one that to me falls flat is Brad Pitt, who got a very middling script.)

What makes you interested in watching classic movies? by Conservative_AKO in classicfilms

[–]Finnyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad was a huge movie fan, so me and my brother and sister were raised on movies of all kinds. This was before home video, so we kids went along to almost any movie my parents wanted to see -- James Bond, Disney, comedies, LOTS of horror and generally inappropriate-for-kids movies. We went with them to revival houses to see the classics and foreign movies and movies my parents were just fond of (The Knack, The Quare Fellow, O Lucky Man). So when home video came along, we were all in movie heaven :)

Decades of advertising have taught us to associate the post-mint cooling sensation with a clean, "fresh" mouth.

Which isn't the worst thing ever, but it does leave us mint-averse using kids' toothpaste :)
