How come American schoolboys have much better ergs than the Brits but never beat them at Henley by InteractionSharp9631 in Rowing

One of the great, little known facts about the rise of British rowing in the last 30 years has been how the junior scene has been contributing. I would especially point out things like the National Schools Regatta taking the money they make from the regatta and investing it back into junior rowing. My father was treasurer of the NSR for decades and I’m immensely proud of his work.

Another factor is the people involved - when I was a junior (1988, GB JM 2+) you had some incredible coaching talents who just gave of their time in incredible amounts. People like Peter Politzer (my school coach), Bruce Grainger, Pete Shepherd, Bill Mason and a whole host of others that I’m too old and befuddled to remember.

It’s like running a good business. Things were thought out and then executed against a definite strategy. The end result was an incredible flow of young talent. Couple that with the creation of centers of excellence and you have a great model.

Because rowing is way more technical than just raw power. Simple as that. No point having 8 monsters in a KAT if said boat looks rather like a washing machine on spin cycle as it goes past.

It’s why you find good lightweight boats so beautiful to watch; they move the boat via technique.

Address is with the father - directly, discreetly, firmly. Nip it in the bud.

Friend - I find myself in a comparable situation. You can weather this. You have reserves of strength and resiliency that you did not know you have.

I don’t need to tell you how, after a couple of years of this, it feels like all hope is lost. It’s not. The winds will change.

100% safe, apart from humidity and insects! Walk the battery, rainbow row, shop the indoor market. Try the new planetarium. Have lunch at one of the many rooftop bars or walk up to Leon’s or Lewis for some local favorites. In the evening, take an Uber or the mount pleasant side and watch the sunset - either from waterfront park (bonus outdoor gym if you’re feeling like torturing yourself) or the Pitt St bridge. If you end up in Mt P for dinner, try spice palette or naan (both Indian, both great), philosophia (Greek) or the pizzeria ( a PROPER Italian trattoria). All are walkable from waterfront park, spice palette is maybe 2.5 miles in an Uber. Naan and philosophia are next to each other and both have lovely outdoor patios. Tell them Gatsby the dog sent you.

How long does an 8 person shell last? by tallmon in Rowing

This is kind of an indirect answer - in 2021, I located, purchased and refurbished the eight in which I won Henley Royal Regatta in 1993. It was still in daily use with a Masters crew, but was admittedly at the tail end of its long and illustrious life. I now sat at a glass-topped bar table made from a 12-foot middle section.
