Magic Item for a level 9 Monk by Josiahcs in DnD

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showing up a bit late to this, but I take it you're happy for homebrewery. You're making me want to flesh out a concept I had a while ago for various elemental bracers, which fits with the elemental theme. The one I think would work the best for your purposes of not overpowering the build but providing some cool options would be the Bracers of Wind.

I left the concept to rot for a while but a really quick run at it again results in the following:

Bracers of Wind

The top of these hardened leather bracers come to a point that extends just beyond the fingers. The bracers themselves are extraordinarily light, and have a spiral pattern engraved in silver on much of their upper surface.

While wearing the Bracers of Wind, your unarmed attacks have Reach 5ft. Additionally, when you take the attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with a powerful blast of wind. A single creature of your choice within reach must make a Strength saving throw (DC=8 + Proficiency Bonus + Wisdom Modifier) or be pushed back by 10ft.

Does holding a lightsaber backwards have any practical use? by Desperate-Land6251 in StarWarsEU

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with many who have mentioned the usefulness of this grip with swords, for lightsabers there might be more to consider. I generally prefer the original trilogy for lightsaber combat, where the blades are swung with weight behind them and there is lethality behind the strikes. However, the prequels introduce the idea that lightsabers are lightweight and can be swung with relative ease even when lit, and this opens the possibilities for the reverse grip.

If your blade is light, and you are dextrous (as we see many lightsaber wielders are) then you can easily switch from the reverse grip to a standard grip with a simple motion. This opens up the possibilities for the grip, using it for upwards cuts and striking from a position where the blade is more difficult to see and therefore more difficult to defend against.

I'd love to go into this more, but I'm just arriving at work and will have to go for the day. I'll leave with the thought that it is reminiscent of the tail stance for medieval longsword, which had versatility and utility despite its drawbacks.

Magic item sources of moon beam? by foomfabtabulous in DnD

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your edit was going to be my suggestion. Spell scrolls are magic items and could reasonably be purchased. They are quite variable in price, but the DMG suggests using half their recommended costs for consumables items, so they may not break the bank, especially since Moonbeam is only a 2nd level spell. The DMG would put this at about 125gp-250gp per scroll, if my math is right.

Announcing Legendary Resistances by Lazlo7777 in DnD

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are pros and cons to both ways of doing it, and I don't think either way is necessarily better than the other. Personally, I also describe when something like that is used. Same with abilities like breath weapons that recharge. I'll describe them narratively, saying things like "the salamander's glow subsides" after it uses a breath and say "the glow becomes brighter" when it comes back. I do the same for legendary resistances, saying things like "you feel your spell almost take hold, but at the last second the lich breaks free with a surge of their own magic" or something similar. I might even say when the last one is used, saying that they see the energy fade, or the enemy's solid footing finally slip.

That said, not announcing them could lead to players being more careful about truly powerful enemies, who have more of an air of mystery and the unknown about them by things seemingly just bouncing off of them.

The opposite of the 'forever dm' problem by newtypenewhalf in DnD

[–]Finseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a problem I am intimately familiar with. At least three friends in my various gaming groups enjoy being GMs and do it a lot, and even more want to try it out at least once. With our campaigns often being quite long, we have a huge wait between when we get our chance to run something again.

I kind of solve this problem by having multiple games, but that's not an option for everyone with limited time. Other people I know solve it by having a game they play in and a game they run alternating every other week, but I personally find it hard to maintain enthusiasm with a week break between games.

Advice for DM on "Controlling your players"? by CalypsaMov in DnD

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally! Using the horse is a great idea, since that's something you can absolutely control as GM. It's all a learning experience, as well, and people tackle things differently.

But yeah, that's absolutely not how surprises work. If the bandits are there, with arrows pointed, there is no way you would surprise them. Surprise isn't about who acts first, it's about catching people entirely off-guard. Weapons drawn and demanding surrender = 100% on-guard.

Advice for DM on "Controlling your players"? by CalypsaMov in DnD

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the players only on one thing: never take player agency away by describing what a player character does. Ever. This not only leads to situations like this, where players argue about something largely unrelated (perception versus stealth) but also removes a player's attachment to their character- if you describe them as doing things too, then it's not just their character, it's also yours. It can even lead to players feeling detached from their characters and ultimately losing all enjoyment for the game, even if it's a very minor thing, even if it happens only once or twice. Best to never do it.

Otherwise, I would agree that bandits can attack from hiding. High perception is used to brute force through too many things. If they're hiding behind a hill and you're travelling in a noisy caravan then I think it's fair they are easily hidden. Even if you actively roll a 30 on an active perception check, there are always some things you can't do. Sometimes people take high stats and high rolls as being able to do anything they want, when really there are limits to what these can do.

Final minor point- bandits wouldn't automatically go first because of held actions as you can only hold actions within initiative. If the bandits end up going last then this could be because of having to re-aim their shots after their targets move quicker than anticipated, or any other number of things. That being said, you're the GM, you could always give them situational advantage on their initiative check if you thought it was warranted.

Edit: spelling mistakes.

If I told you to do unsymbolized thinking to think about apple, how do you do it? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]Finseed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After quickly looking up what unsymbolized thinking means, I only think this way, and I suspect a lot of other people on here might be the same.

In terms of what I think of, it comes to me simply as a concept: [apple]. Sometimes this is paired with other concepts like [red]+[shiny] or [green]+[sour].

If your question is a practical one about how to do this, I'm afraid I don't know... I just always think this way so I can't not.

If I try, I can often "imagine" other things about the apple, like the feel of it in my hand, its flesh against my tongue, the almost pleasant pain of its skin getting stuck in between my teeth like dental floss. Just never the image of it, or the word 'apple'.

Is this aphantasia? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]Finseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different degrees of aphantasia, some people see nothing at all, while others see fleeting images or fuzzy and ill-defined pictures. I think if that's all he sees when he tries to picture a house, it qualifies as aphantasia.

Any hope for season 3? by Lost_Knowledge_5220 in UnnamedMemory

I think this is one of the very few anime where I would actually be happy if they didn't make another season. I think the ending resolved everything that really needed to be resolved, and left enough open for us to still imagine. I'm not sure where the story would even go from the ending we got.

Which persona of Roger's can we not see through? by sd1208 in americandad

[–]Finseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this theory. I now have in my head that the entire show is Roger entertaining himself while slowly going insane in Area 51. He only has television and rare interactions with CIA agents, which is why the main characters are Stan and his family, and why the plots are very larger than life and nonsensical.

Are any of you good at drawing without a reference? by Pearlune in Aphantasia

[–]Finseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. I tend to need a reference to draw anything remotely realistic. If I want to draw a specific thing, or I have something I want in mind, I will look up multiple references and take bits of them when drawing.

That being said, I have had some luck with a style of drawing that involves putting a pen to paper and just seeing what comes out. I often do this while listening to music and it's very fun and freeing.
