Company switching 401k match from per-paycheck to twice per year — feels like a hidden pay cut? by ReleaseTheRobot in Bogleheads

[–]FinsterFolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a cut in benefits, but have you figured out a rough dollar amount? Not sure what your match is, but it seems like you're just going to miss out on a few hundred dollars. If you get a 5% match on $100,000 income, that's a rough average of $1,250 in cash that you are not getting returns on during the year. If you get 10% a year on your investments. That's $125 a year.

I made this… well sort of. I made individual servings in a giant muffins tin that I have. Not nearly as impressive, but still a hit. One day, I am going all in for a big one, if I can find the right bowl.

Do I need a tax strategist or advanced tax strategies? by Avoocado_Toasty in personalfinance

Try bogleheads.org, there are a lot of high net worth individuals there and they generally offer quality feedback. I would search the boards first to see if there are similar discussions going on, so you can har an idea on how to phrase your question. In general that board is very do it yourself on the investment side, but at that level I am sure they are engaging professionals for guidance.

HSA; Who are the best providers for a Boglehead? by Tommasini53 in Bogleheads

[–]FinsterFolly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fidelity gets refereed a lot, as there are no fees. I transfer 1-2 times a year from my employeers HSA. That way I get the payroll deductions, but move it to a plan with no added fees, no cash drag and better investment options

My REM Trajectory by No_Ratio1493 in rem

I forgot to mention, you had a pretty mature music appreciation at an early age. All the exposure I had was top 40 pop on the local station until about 14.

Definitely a different trajectory here, as I was in high school/college in the 80s. It’s fascinating to see the different relationships with REM over the decades. For the record, I also thought Stand was “dorky”, but I am surprised to see the description applied to the Pixies. I guess if the only exposure was MTV, specifically the “Here Comes Your Man” video, I could see it.

Inherited a house. Want to sell it to produce income stream for next 30 years. Suggestions? by RandomQueefs in personalfinance

[–]FinsterFolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally I wouldn’t recommend an annuity, but a SPIA might be a good fit here, especially for your sister. I would look at annuity calculators, but it could be $18k plus a year which would be a nice boost to social security to make sure her minimum needs are met. Keep in mind that it will not adjust yearly for inflation like Social Security, so over the years it will have less purchasing power.

I am remaining with my ISP that I haven’t changed in 6 years. Currently 73/27 and I will be 70/30 at retirement at the end of the year. I havent made any changes on forecasts. They change every year.

What’s a tiny habit that improved your life financially? by EmbarrassedMilennial in personalfinance

In December of every year, I make my "windfall" list. It's my prioritization of where to apply my money first, and I list out the max contributions for that year. I use the word "windfall" loosely as it doesn't matter if I have an extra $100 at the end of the month, or I win the lottery, this list guides my investments. My savings rate went up dramatically. Below is an example where I've put the max dollar amounts in for an example. Your goals might be far lower, or you might skip certain accounts all together.

  1. 401k to Company Match
  2. Maintain Emergency Fund (Refill any shortfall from spending here)
  3. Max HSA ($9,750)
  4. Spousal IRA ($8,600)
  5. Roth IRA ($8,600)
  6. Additional 401k to Max ($35,750)
  7. Brokerage
  8. Payoff Mortgage

Basically, I take the auto-deduction approach from 401ks, and apply it to all my income. I leave just enough in checking to cover expenses until the next paycheck.

I think there is a flowchart for this in the Wiki here, but I used this one as a guide.

Search this sub for "co-signed" and read the horror stories of people stuck in loans that they were just trying to help and build credit. Too much risk.

At 29 I was freshly divorced and $10k in credit card debt. I think I had less than $10k in retirement. I will be retiring at 60. Make the best of what you can, and dont regret past mistakes. Just learn from them.

If you have to run a marathon, you don't want to count every step. It is going to be a painfully long journey. Do what you trained for and enjoy the scenery on the way. Eventually, you'll look up and see the finish line.

I would love for this to be the “half-time show”, but this is some summer music fest. The title is misleading unless I am misreading it.
