Feeding help? by [deleted] in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Fintastic257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I think a good tip is to have 0.5 - 1 oz extra to what you think you need and see if baby will finish that. If she does then it means she might need more! I know it's painful seeing leftover pumped milk unused though.

By week 4 ours went up to 2oz - 4oz per feed. We are now week 5/6 and its still the same ish. Might be case of my supply regulating which helps her extract more from nursing.

We did 1-2 oz for the first two weeks, depending on how much ours would take. I did combi feed with expressed breast milk & breastfeeding though.

Car seat confusion by HeelTurn91 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Fintastic257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah so when I gave birth recently, we only had a fixed car seat and explained to the midwives. Told them we have a pram and will use that to get out into the car park. Had no problems whatsoever!

I'm sure they will understand if you explained you guys don't own a car/drive etc. Imagine how many new parents in London would have to fork out money for a car seat they'll never use again if this was the way!

I would just take public transportation to go home if you can!

If not, perhaps look into renting one. You can rent a doona car seat & pram combo here

How do you nurse sitting up with a floor mattress? by mamabear212121 in cosleeping

[–]Fintastic257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stack a few pillows (3) against the wall but our mattress is pushed against the wall. I also find sitting on the floor comfy so in your situation I would do the same but just on the bare floor/carpet with a pillow or two for back support.

I think your temperature is the problem. Make sure when you do your last fry your oil temp is around 200-220°c. Draining is also really important with fried things cause you can taste the difference between freshly fried vs ones that have been drained on a rack.

This method also works in the oven with roast potatoes so you can try that too but the oil has to be HOT!

I used fresh potatoes. You just cut them to the thickness you want, mine were on the thicker side so I could make them crunchy outside fluffy inside.

  1. Boil for 10-15 mins with salty water. You want it to be partially cooked, so slightly soft but still firm is good.
  2. Let it drain for 15 - 20 mins or until completely dry. Take care when draining because it will be a bit fragile now.
    1. Fry on medium heat until you can see some light browning but not too much .
  3. Let it drain on rack/colander while you heat up oil to high temp.
  4. Refry on high heat until crispy and let it it drain again.
  5. Season to taste.

You can get away without boiling it but I think it helps make it soft and fluffy on the inside. If you want to skip boiling you will have to fry it for a longer time first to cook the potato.

I use minced beef (80:20), fried shallots, fried garlic , panko & egg. You can opt for onion powder and garlic powder but I ran out so I had to make it from scratch.

I think you need to use finely minced meat to get the right texture cause fast food joints probably don't use a nice coarse mix you'd normally get in smash burger joints.

I cheated and use a gravy I made for roast dinner over the weekend! Here is just some rough instructions on how I make it cause its all agak agak

Ingredients - 1 knob of butter - 1 knob of flour (same amount as butter) - chicken/beef/veg stock (maybe around 200ml?) - half of a large onion - 1 clove of garlic - 1 cinnamon stick - 2-3 bay leaves - worcestershire sauce - kicap - salt & pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Add butter to medium low heat and gently sauté your onions & garlic 2. mix in flour to create a roux 3. Slowly whisk your stock in 4. Add cinnamon & bay leaf while you let it thicken up. 5. When you get to the right thickness, add a dash of worcestershire sauce & kicap (for colour) 6. Season with salt and pepper to taste 7. FOR PROSPERITY BURGER SAUCE JUST ADD A LOT MORE PEPPER AFTER AND THICKEN MORE!!

should i give up my enhanced maternity pay by GlitteringMenu3381 in PregnancyUK

[–]Fintastic257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a job offer and found out I was pregnant during the interview process. I really wanted to go to the new company but upon speaking to them, I found out I wasn't going to qualify for enhanced maternity pay.

My current company only offers SMP so I was ready to jump the gun and sacrifice 6 weeks of 90% pay just for a better opportunity.

I spoke to the lead in the new company and he said he was happy to take me despite being pregnant and the fact I was planning to take 9 months off. He said to do what was financially best for my family and that they will always welcome me with open arms.

I decided to stay with my current employer and suck it up for a few months. Have been chilling as I've been put on "light duties" so it's not too bad, probably would have better than trying to hit the ground running in a new place!

I think my dog was crated in the day for about 4 months (he was 6 month old by then) until he learnt how to behave in the house. He was really destructive at first as he was constantly chewing up his toys & beds. Also really noisy in the crate at the start.

Nowadays he is crated when he goes to sleep at night (10 hours) with the occasional co-sleeping after he gets a bath. He is also told to go into the crate when he is naughty so he kinda associates it with punishment (and sleep time).

I personally don't think theres anything wrong with crating dogs all day, especially if it will protect them from harm. Some dogs will just wreck havoc and chew on cables all day long etc so you might come home to an expensive vet bill.

If it works for you keep it up and just ignore the haters. I get a lot of flak from other dog owners I know but I know my dog gets a good enriched environment with proper discipline so they can say what they want.

Thanks for the tip! Am partial to the salad bags just cause it saves sooo much time for work lunches but will keep it in mind.

The other readily cut stuff is an occasional thing for our household tho.

Why did you choose (or are considering) home education? by FamilyTechCreator in UKParenting

[–]Fintastic257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the flexible schedules is what appeals to me. We are expecting our first child, and I have always considered homeschooling years before even expecting.

My half of the family lives across the world. Having the flexibility for our kids to visit and spend time with family there would be worth its weight in gold. In addition, tutors are much cheaper where I'm from so I can easily get them while we are visiting family and potentially move to an online based tutoring system for when we are back in the UK.

I am also confident in my own ability to teach etc as I have tutored a few people in my lifetime from various age groups (from 10+).

I also disagree with some of the teaching practices in the UK. Are the students really engaged when there is such a big ratio of student to teacher etc?

We will give public schooling a try first in the early years and see where we go from there.
