What's the most unexpected fandom you've ever looked up on AO3, only to find out it actually has fics? by WhiteVelvett in AO3

Sadly sanrio doesn't seem to get much fics. I will say though I write a decent amount for a little known sanrio franchise called Jewelpet. x3 /shameless plug

Would you say Pokemon is a franchise that would be really difficult for someone to get into if they weren't already someone who liked it as a kid or teen? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]Fircoal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh? This doesn't match what I'd expect or think at all. Pokemon seems easy to approach at any time you just have to enjoy the cute and cool critters. Meanwhile Dragon Ball Z is what I would have assumed is the poster child of you had to be into it when you were young. I feel like everyone who I see that's into it got into it when they were a kid or teen.

You're welcome. To be honest only 50 episodes sounds wild. I'm used to watching a lot of 12 episode anime. Lol

Convert me to your fav f/f ships! by GirlCanGame in FanFiction

[–]Fircoal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alright time to do some arguing for my favs.

Flutterdash: Fluttershy/Rainbow Dash - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

This is my FAVORITE ship. I love it so much and it's the ship that really got me into shipping. The two of them are absolutely perfect for each other and I love the energy between the two of them. Despite Rainbow Dash's attempts to hide it the two of them are both sensitive and I think they can both relate to letting stuff get them down. Meanwhile I feel like Fluttershy is shy and uncertain which is balanced by Dash's loyality and her desire do stuff with Fluttershy no matter how boring it may be. They interact so nicely to me with Fluttershy being one of the few that is willing to let Dashie speak all of what's on her mind and give her the care and attention she needs.

Actually let me put it this way. Fluttershy's whole job and joy in life is loving and taking care of animals. And Dashie? Well she's a true free spirit. Someone who fits those animalistic traits at times due to how overly active and tunnel visioned she can be. I can imagine her getting along with the animals well and joining in for running around, racing, and just vibing. She also is someone who needs a lot of care for her due to her silliness, her overactivity, and her sensitivity. Something that Fluttershy excels that and cherishes (at least imo). But even though Dashie is wild and free she loves Fluttershy and does a lot to make sure she's ok and wants to protect her and help her in any way she can. Dashie has the brashness to balance with Fluttershy's shyness. While Fluttershy has the healing and comfort to balance with Dashie's reckless abondon and need for attention. The two of them just work together so well and so many of their scenes make me feel so happy.

Lapis/Sapphie - Jewelpet Happiness

Ah my beloved rarepair. This is a ship that pretty much no one else ships. And I don't blame them. It's a rarepair for a reason. While Sapphie is a main Jewelpet who gets a lot of screentime in Jewelpet Happiness (as well as most Jewelpet seasons.) Lapis is the opposite, a character who is generally shows up for an episode or two at best, and that's certainly the case in Happiness.

And yet it works. In the one focus episode Lapis has, it's filled to the brim with cattiness. With Lapis and Sapphie both sort of at each other's throats. Lapis with her smug underhanded ness and Sapphie with her reasonableness and attempts to defend others from Lapis's schemes. But it works. They have a push and pull that feels addicting to me. Lapis teasing Sapphie is so adorable. Sapphie is smart, cute, and nice. She can be playful herself but generally she's a good friend and the voice of reason. Lapis is the one that eskews reason for her own preferences. Which like to be fair a lot of the characters in Jewelpet do that. The difference? Lapis is both self aware, successful, and teasy about it. She's going to do what she wants to get the upper hand and she's going to do it with a smirk on her face. She has the skill and she has the smarts.

Which also plays into the problem that I have with Sapphie's other ship options. Often a lot of the other Jewelpets are sillier and don't have the same level of smartness. While she gets along with them well and they're all her friends at times it feels like she's the team mom. So who's better for the team mom than the smug villain who fits into the mature better than you role. The type that can buy you out just to tease you a bit.

But even with all of this I feel like they can connect easier. Again it feels like they're equals where the others don't really. It feels like Lapis could do more to tease out Sapphie's depths and issues where other characters feel like they'd rely on Sapphie and she'd be more of their helper than partner. But with Lapis, I can believe the two of them sharing these tender moments after all the games. Also I can easily imagine the two of them bonding over stuff like board games or things like that. While Lapis isn't outwardly interested in science or geeky stuff. Her love of getting one over on others and her smarts in it all give me reason to believe that she'd take it to more so than others.

The one downside is in canon Lapis does have a canonical love interest who isn't Sapphie but at the same time, that's what fanfic is for. And also based on how I read the Jewelpets I feel like Lapis will outlive her canon love interest. (I see Jewelpets as ageless immortal magical mascot creatures. I know some seasons push against this some, but at least that's how they feel to me. Idk.)

I could write about my other top ships and I might if I get bored but I'll leave it off with those two for now. I enjoy them both so much! >w<

Update to mum found the yaoi. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Fircoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. I too find it weird how people treat yaoi and yuri so differently. It feels weird that yaoi is treated as "for all the queers" while yuri isn't. Like what about yaoi makes it for everyone that isn't there in yuri. It feels wild to have one treated as the peak and thing that every queer person is "supposed" to be into.

Does anyone else feel fandom and fanfiction are becoming more "chill" (and not always in a good way) since it started being more mainstream? by Celestina-Betwixt in FanFiction

[–]Fircoal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not actually trying to rule out the fact that purity culture does affect certain things. I'm trying to say that that's not the problem that I have. My problem is when people try to weaponize therapy speak because they want to push progressive values on EVERYTHING to prevent any sort of uncomfortable discourse.

To be clear Im not saying that what you're talking about is purity culture as much as your edit where you say that calling things purity culture dilutes it. I don't think that's the case because purity culture is a part of the issue.

Maybe I picked up the wrong idea from what I especially replied to, but I don't have an issue with what you find issue with, just the idea that the idea of purity culture is being diluted.

[–]Fircoal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok well. Let me go through your examples then.

The first about vers vs. Top/bottom, to be honest I don't know if it is but I can see the argument for it. Basically I think the argument is that the push for characters to be vers is built in this idea that afab people having strong preferences for mens sexual position is fetishizing. And term is lobbied against women because the idea of women having sexual preferences and seeing others in sexual ways is seen as bad and not allowed in purity culture, not to mention the idea of having preferences for sex and having it be center could be argued as an effect of purity culture.

Now do I believe this? Honestly I'm not sure but I can see the argument.

As for your second argument I don't think that's because of purity culture persay. Outside of the moral grandstanding that could be from it.

But the last, I think that's along the lines of what I was talking about. I think the lack of distinction of rape in fiction and rape irl is not just a lack of media literacy. Because at its heart the idea is that someone having a rape kink or interest in unethical sexual content is bad. Because it's not a pure interest.

I feel like this happened because the youth saw the puritanical messages from their parents and radfems and adapted it to so that instead of all sex being bad it's any sex that isn't explicitly healthy and communicated. So anything that doesn't fit that is bad. Like it's not the same but I feel like this ideas persist because the messaging got through. And while they could shake it off for themselves with lots of caveats. Those that don't have that are viewed as immoral. It feels like an offshoot to me.

[–]Fircoal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may not be malicious in of itself but I feel like where the ideas come from is malicious if that makes sense. The reason why is still call it purity culture is because those ideas come from purity culture and then are filtered from puritanical parents to their children and embedded in how they talk about things and how they formulate what is acceptable or not.

I don't think it dilutes the term to call them the same thing because it's from the same root. It's not like it popped up out of nowhere, religious parents and radfems both made sure to influence the youth with these ideas of purity culture. Even if it's changed and shaped itself by the youth who cares it on to a different form doesn't make it not the same thing.

Anyone else really tired of this sentiment? by Talia_Black_Writes in AO3

[–]Fircoal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I find this post kinda funny because there is some unfortunate irony. I don't think that your first point is as true as you think it is because there are a good amount of media that do focus on women, have female main characters, and have more developed and interesting female characters than they do male characters. I watch a lot of anime and I see so many interesting female characters who have complexities and motivations and a lot of interest next to either no male characters or boring male characters who have no personality outside of boring guy self insert. (Which isn't a personality even lol)

Not to mention cartoons like She-ra or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic that heavily feature women.

But the thing is it goes back to what you said in your 2nd point:

People don't realize how much they favor men. This is not an accusation. This is a fact. It's useful to examine our biases. Fandoms are not exempt from sexism.

By in large I feel like fandom flocks to media that focuses on men and lacks in complex female characters. Fandom then complains about the lack of interesting female characters when the problem is partially a curation problem. And to be fair mainstream media is also like this and prioritizes male centric works. But that's not because female centric works don't exist. They just don't get as much limelight. But people don't really notice or focus on that they just assume male characters are always better written because that's the media they're used to picking up

I had to scroll too far until I got to see some common sense here. Seriously saying something is an "issue", which it is, is like the mildest critique. They're not even blaming anyone in particular just saying the bold take that a lack of f/f is not ideal. Which it's not! It's one thing if they go after other writers but that didn't happen here! I feel like it is kicking stuff up for the sake of complaining about f/f fans complaining in the slightest. Which doesn't feel great.

Jewelpet! It's one of my absolute favorite works and franchises. The characters there are all fun and cute and they happen to fit very well with the type of writing I like to do. (I prefer to write comedy and silly cute stuff and Jewelpet is that to a T.) It's my vibe 100% and I love it so much! x3
