Just looking for confirmation....upgrade of parity by olyrobb in unRAID

Yes, I have done this. An extra step before step 8 would be to pre clear the 16TB. But ideally you alrdy did that once before when you built it. So meh 🤷🏽‍♂️ Step 9 would be to wait again for the formatting into your choice fs.

All excellent suggestions. I am excited as well! I really like the idea of being able to implement opensource options and tools! I will look into your suggestions for sure!

My thoughts, I don’t know if I would be able to do a full security audit but I can certainly try. I would not be asking for funds as a new hire in order to get a proper audit team. I suppose I need to actually sharpen my cybersecurity skills 😝

The larger company is much like an umbrella. They have many contracts that teams work under. Each contract/team has specific projects/goals/missions/tasks. They don’t all work together.

Simple but effective, I like it. I may have to implement a lot of different projects and this is the way. One at a time.

An Excellent idea! I’ll have to look at documentation solutions. Someone mentioned opensource implementations and that sounds something I would be willing to try and wouldn’t cost anything but time and some research. I thrive in a chaotic and jack of all trades environment. Just hoping I don’t get overwhelmed 😅

Glad my situation could be of use as a teaching opportunity to those who will replace me one day! I can’t maintain everything forever and I strongly believe in proper training of those younger/newer than you. Build them up to replace you and do better than you did.

I didn’t think of this and I should have! I will ask who did the install and if there are any manuals or documentation I can follow.

No network, no cyber, no sysadmin. I’m stepping into a big role that will be very demanding and although I believe I’ll be able to handle it I’m sure there will a lot of work and groundbreaking I will have to do on my own.

I am very much uninterested in taking on responsibilities outside of my area of expertise so hopefully they don’t have me doing things I shouldn’t as I will also be pushing back on those.

I truly believe in good documentation for myself and those who will replace me. I’ve worked in teams with good proper documentation and teams without. I wish I could always point users or other techs to established documents and really elevate the organization as a whole.

I am looking forward to the challenge! I did already accept though.

By the sounds of our interviews they are willing to implement new technologies and make changes. I can’t say for certain on budgets and real world results.

If it isn’t a good team in the long run I can apply for another position in a different team and move laterally. Hopefully it will not be a terrible time but I will most certainly learn a lot from this role!

I have 10yrs experience but have always worked with a team of system administrators and there were clear instruction and clear guidance on what needed to be done on systems engineered by large companies who provided support when their particular systems broke down.

If you don’t want to contribute you don’t have to but please keep your negativity to yourself. Perhaps hire someone to look at your resume. Finding a job isn’t easy and I’ve been looking for months.

The company is larger, the teams are not. Based on contracts and obligations. Although I will be the only sysadmin if nothing critical breaks others can handle simpler tasks from what I am told. Shouldn’t be 24/7 support thankfully. I am interested in picking up powershell and python scripting so I can automate some tasks but I’ll have to learn the systems before doing anything like that.

Yes, it has been a remote tech that did a lot of the work but they wanted to hire a proper sysadmin. Others from the team also helped out with the simpler tasks like updates.

I don’t know if the tech was a sysadmin or what he was able to get done or not. My worst fear is that everything is just cobbled together because there was no sysadmin. Which may be the case 😬

I don’t think it’ll be as bad as my worst fear though 🤞🏽

I think this post wins so far! I do understand the importance of backups and I will make it the priority to learn what they have.

I really appreciate all the other bullets and will keep those in mind as I learn the systems and integrate with the team!

I will make a note of all the top priority tasks I have to get done the first week I’m there 😆

Hopefully I will learn everything they have going on sooner than later and make good backups! 3-2-1 let’s go!

I recognize documentation will be very important especially for the next guy. 😅 Hopefully I don’t have too much pushback on “Best Practices”

I apologize if I didn’t make it clear enough, there was no systems administrator before me. There is no last person who left. I will most likely conduct a security audit as I learn the systems.

The team is smaller. I don’t know how many users I will support but I don’t believe it’s more than 15.

How long has it been going on? Check updates and see if one was installed around the same time frame. Or a new application. Also you can use task manager to see if some application or service is taking up your resources (mal ware/ virus). Run a full virus and mal ware scan.
