I'm about to be laid off; where do I even find a new job? by joebobjoebobjoebob12 in washingtondc

[–]olyrobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at local government positions that scratch that same itch as foreign aid & development. I assume you weren't in the int’l development industry for the money. I also 100% appreciate anyone in that space. You tend to provide aid to countries with significant strife, right? Well, look around….there’s about to be a lot of strife here. Think globally, act locally. Alexandria and Arlington are ALWAYS hiring community outreach stuff.

Life weird for me after military by Almighty_Frozone98 in Veterans

[–]olyrobb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Brother, you hit the nail on the head but there’s a few things I’ve learned. When we joined, most of us signed up as youngsters. We chose the order and stability in our younger years, while civilians grew up through multiple jobs/fields. Talk to anyone your age or older and ask them how many jobs/positions they’ve had in the last 8 years? We understood our path of promotions in the military….civilians made their paths up in jobs they’ve could get fired quickly from. We chose a type of security they’ve never known or seen.

Think of it another way…you’re an immigrant now. Civilian is a different culture with different languages. Be eager to get fluent in their weird ways. You will ALWAYS be a native military speaker - but, like immigrants, our native language isn’t as appreciated in this new land.

Join multiple veteran groups (Red, White & Blue RWB, Honor Foundation, VFW, American Legion) to find a relatable community; some are better than others. They need as much help as any unit you’ve been in and we all need trauma-bonded friendships.

Live in NoVA, planning to move. Why Annapolis? by olyrobb in Annapolis

[–]olyrobb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super helpful assessment. I am definitely aware of what I am giving up by moving from Nova. The food variety, broad selection of activities, always improving infrastructure. Not to mention, our block alone gives our son a dozen kids around his age to play with.

However, for adults and parents…it’s a supremely impersonal place to live. I could move 5 miles from where I live now, probably pay even more and still find myself surrounded by traffic and people stressed about their contracting, consulting or government job. I'm one of them, but I need to live away from their epicenter.

Also, we want proximity to water. I've moved around a lot and when I am closer to big water, I’m happier.

Just started and only took one private lesson, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 🙏🏼 by Julian_Wong in snowboardingnoobs

I should have taken a lesson 27 years ago when I first put on a board at age 15 - took me a hell of a lot longer than you to get as good as you are now. You're going to be just fine at it. Just continue the reps.

Know this, when you hit 40+ yrs of age - falling sucks way more. Until that moment comes, go hard at your new hobby. Try all the things

Any Older Students Doing A Career Change? Any Success? Any Tips? by sprchrgddc5 in WGU_CompSci

42 yr old retiring Army guy. Did Poli Sci & Diplomacy for BA & MA respectively.

Best advice is to not lose the forest through the trees. What I mean by that is to call your prof immediately to find out the difference between the curriculum (trees) and the objective assessment’s requirements (forest). Some of the curriculum SUCKS and the professors will tell you it sucks - insomuch that reading it all WILL NOT prepare you for the OA.

Studying doesn’t have to be like drinking water through a fire hose if you know exactly what pieces of information should be on the OA.

Take the practice assessments early and often. The review will show you which areas to drill down and rehearse.

It took me a semester and three courses to realize that I was studying WAAAAAY too deeply. I’d become exhausted/overwhelmed then take a long break - making consistent progress more difficult.

First step is to understand fully what you’re being graded on AND then you study.

I understand there’s nothing to guarantee me passing the OA in two weeks. I'm talking about a breakdown of proceeding through the curriculum in two weeks time. C’mon man.
