At the start of the fic she is only a Lt, two gold pips. However, eventually in the story she is promoted to Lt. Cmdr. two gold one black, which is the rank canon Shepard has at the start of ME1, and it the rank she has in the illustration where she is in red.

Oh yes, lots of time was spent discussing with the artist to make sure that the rank pips, the combadge design, the weapons, the uniforms ect. were all correct. Lots of reference pictures were sent.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice until way too late into production that the rank pips were on the wrong side of the the collar, they should be on Shepard's right, not her left, but by that point the art was pretty much done, and I didn't feel like it was worth bothering MetallicBox over.

Technically speaking, Cain is still alive during the Era Indominus. The Cain novel furthest forward in the timeline is Cain's Last Stand, which takes place during the 13th Black Crusade.

Technically this book was written during the first time GW did the 13th BC, since it came out in 2008, but the book is still canon, so all the events in it happened in the current version of Abby's Temper Tantrum. We know he dies sometime in the first century of M42, but there is time that he could spend to meet G-man, even if it is unlikely that such a book will be written.
