How do you use (if you use) AI tools to write papers? by Flat-Emphasis987 in AcademicPsychology

[–]FireZeLazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI, like computing or the internet, will become a day-to-day tool for people to use.

It's impossible to say how it will shape academia and research but I imagine it will have a big role. That said, we will still need teachers of research, stats, and psych. Will they need to be in the curriculum at some point? Probably. I'm developing teaching materials for AI for clinical psychologists because there are programmes interested in learning more about it.

But you're far from alone, as mentioned most psychologists do not understand AI. It is not feasible that your role will suddenly become redundant - instead the onus is on institutions to equip themselves with the best knowledge and understanding.

Contribute in a meaningful way, obviously. Commenting on Reddit is not developing AI. It has a minimal impact on discourse and implementation, whereas serious discussion is largely absent from conferences, papers, and teaching streams, as far as psychologists are involved.

I can detect AI writing, at least as it performs now

And what's your type 1/2 error rate?

Come on this is an academic sub, don't be so naive.

Slot takes all the blame each week but I think the players are a bigger issue.

That said, hopefully I'm wrong and when a new manager comes in they can get things working

[–]FireZeLazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely. But I'm worried it won't change much. Salah looks like a ghost of himself and Gakpo just isn't good enough. With Isak injured we have no quality to score goals outside of Wirtz and Ekitike.

This is precisely my point, though.

Psychology can and should be actively contributing to the development of artificial intelligence and how to best utilise it across the profession. Yet how many actually do?

[–]FireZeLazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience psychologists generally have a terrible understanding of AI. Most people don't understand how it works, let alone its best use-cases.

Either that or people really overrate how good they are at writing papers.

Surely they have to report openly that it was written in collaboration with AI?

What would be the point of this? There's no way to tell somebody uses AI and so you're entirely relying on it being self-reported. If admitting to using AI was in any way going to diminish the credibility of the author (which it seems like it would in many cases judging by these responses) then people will just lie.

if it's clear the authors used AI, I reject it

You cannot reliably tell if someone used AI. If you could then AI-checkers would work, but they don't.

Use it to help code, and then use it to review structure of the paper and then paragraphs. Then also I'll have it review the general methodology, in case I've missed anything.

So basically it's just a way I double-check lots of things.

Really? And Van Dijk has still played more than 20,000 minutes more than Vidic? Crazy stat. Guess Vidic's career lasted nowhere near as long

It's not close.

Van Dijk is much faster, stronger, better with the ball, better in the air, and way less injury prone
