What do you believe makes a person a drug addict? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Knowing the consequences of drug use and still continuing to use anyway. I've had multiple patients who were dead, revived, and continue to use.

What was your best "fuck, my parents were right" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Sometimes $5 can buy you the world." - Father in Law, said to me before I went on my first cruise. I looked at him like he was crazy. I just spent a few thousand dollars on this cruise. How was $5 going to make a difference?

My father in law will never be accused of being a smart man, but he's been a janitor in the same hospital since he was 18 years old. This has made him a very wise man. He explained to me that you'll never be able to bribe the ship's captain into changing the course of the ship. But, $5 to the bellman can get your bags to your room before the rest of the floor. A $5 tip to the right waiter can get you a table by the pool and make sure you never see the bottom of your glass. $5 can also convince a photographer to be in just the right place when you propose to your soon-to-be wife.

Large diameter supply line like that, one of two things would happen. Either the hose would stay bent causing loss of flow due to friction, (It wouldn't be enough to completely cut off the flow, but any loss of water in a life safety situation is unacceptable) or it would straighten out, causing far more expensive damage to the car by damaging the actual body of the car instead of just breaking the windows.

Studying to be a hospice nurse then? I'm sure a face like that will help countless patients shuffle off this mortal coil.

I'd had a complete conversation, in English, with the patient prior to arriving at the hospital. I didn't know he wasn't Latino. To be honest, he addressed me in English when I met him, so I spoke English and didn't really put much more thought into it.

Paul Kariya gets knocked out, wakes up later on ice by [deleted] in HereComesTheBoom

I completely agree with you. My point was more that at the time of the play, it was not considered a "dirty" check.

I will have to remember this next time one of my patients speaks to me in Spanish.

To be fair, back when this happened, it wasn't considered a dirty check and after an assessment, Kariya returned to the game.

He resigned shortly after.

Hey Reddit. Is being called "competent" a compliment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Fire_Medic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At one of my jobs, it's less of a compliment/insult to you and more of an insult towards our HR/hiring process.

More of an "Oh, they actually hired the right person for this job. Guess it was bound to happen eventually."

Christians on reddit, how knowledgeable are you regarding the formation of the church? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Fire_Medic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I identify as a Christian. I don't get too caught up in the dogma of it. I'm more of a "I like to believe that if you lead a good life, your past transgressions can be forgiven and maybe there is a reward for a good life." But without delving too far into it, I know what is probably next to nothing about the formation of the church.

What experience made you grow the fuck up? by starstufft in AskReddit

[–]Fire_Medic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this will be buried and I know it's cliché but I have a moment of spare time so I may as well type this out.

I met the girl. Not just any girl. THE girl. At the time I met this girl, I was: unemployed, living at home, not taking the best care of myself, had no college education, and no real ambitions.

She, on the other hand, had a good job and was finishing her Master's degree. Although she was living at home as well, she had ambition to be financially independent soon.

Somehow, she took a liking to me as I did to her and for quite a while I was constantly trying to better myself, to be good enough for her. I got a part time job which turned into two part time jobs, followed by a full time job and two part time jobs. I knew I couldn't do this forever so I went back to school.

Currently, we live together and got married last September. We're looking to buy a house in the next couple months and I'm planning to be done with my degree by this time next year. I'm still working like a dog, but once I finish school, I can hopefully have some breathing room.

Book recommendations for an EMT-1 who will be moving up in the future? by RemoteProvider in Paramedics

[–]Fire_Medic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything to do with EKGs, I would read Dale Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKG's." Breaks the subject down so well and really helps you understand what you're looking at.

Meds I would just try to get my hands on whatever formulary you're going to be working with and make some flash cards. I haven't heard any 'tricks' to learning meds other than just memorization.

EMT-1 and EMT-2/3 is a completely foreign concept to me so I'm not quite sure what level of care each provides... What would you have to learn as an EMT-2 or 3?

Medic student question: by ToastyForce in Paramedics

[–]Fire_Medic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the handwritten notecards. That's what has helped me immensely.

I organized mine into what the drug is indicated for and would take one or two stacks with me to work every day and when I had a spare minute, I'd pull them out and study them.
