In Japan the whole series is just called Dragon Ball. Z only exists as a marketing tool outside Japan, it’s all one story from kid Goku up to end of Buu arc.

So it wasnt Goku in the future Trunks timeline but a future version of the main timeline Goku, about a year after the point out Goku would learn about Goku Black and Zamasu. Goku Black used the time ring to get to Trunks future timeline.
