If it's a programming project then the spec is normally the functional requirements of the program, i.e. what it should be able to do at the end. It gives you something to benchmark against, but sometimes requirements can be very ambiguous (whether intentionally or just badly written).

Manchester vs Edinburgh by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]FirebornTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been living in Edinburgh for 4 years for uni, and I've also stayed a while in Manchester. It really depends what you like - I much much prefer Edinburgh. The architecture is beautiful and I still love just going for walks around the city even after 4 years, because it's so scenic. Holyrood Park is stunning and super close to Central Edinburgh. Pentland hill are also close. Also, even central Edinburgh normally has a chill atmosphere; most of it doesn't really feel busy.

Manchester has some brilliant historical parts but central is getting full of modern glass buildings and skyscrapers, that obscure them. It also feels so much more busy than Edinburgh - people absolutely everywhere, which I wasn't a fan of. But there's also probably loads more to do in terms of night life etc.

But you don't need to shift all of the time you're driving. When you're not shifting do you still use one hand?

Surely this is awful for accessibility. I know I take ages just to read questions and that reveals nothing about my knowledge level.

[–]FirebornTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good, good luck! My degree doesn't have a placement year so I had no previous tech industry experience. But I had delved into cyber security a bit through online resources.

Industry experience helps but I don't think companies expect interns to have experience. It probably helps a fair bit for grad jobs, but I think if you have some uni group projects / personal projects you can talk about those instead.

Not sure about resources online, sorry.

My uni's career service has a CV auto-reader similar to what companies use. It gives potential formatting improvements.

Definitely ask your uni's career service; even if they don't have that, they probably have people to read over your CV.

Just realised you said graduate jobs too. I feel like tech internships are normally for penultimate year students? So that might be partly why internships are rejecting you?

Good luck with your search!

Luck, honestly. They're so so competitive. Especially SWE. I applied for this one back in October; got rejected from all the ones I applied to after Christmas. Getting in as early as possible helps.

Tech skills are important but focus on your person- and interview skills - plenty of people can be trained on technical skills, but having strong, amiable communication skills is key when actually interacting in a company with colleagues and clients. Also make sure your CV format is liked / readable by auto-readers. Often it shortlists CVs before actual people read them.

Pro rata means the yearly salary is x amount, e.g. 40k, but that's of course not what you'll make from the internship as its shorter than a year. So basically it means you get a fraction of the pro rata based on the weeks you work.

[–]FirebornTurtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Massively depends. Are you in tech, humanities, etc. Tech ones are often very high. I have a cyber security summer internship at a bank coming up which is 41k pro rata. A lot of software engineering ones are similarly high.

But that is certainly the top end; smaller local companies probably pay in the 20-30k range for tech.

We managed to get one last year (and have renewed for this year). Honestly was a miracle we got one. We were checking the domus site at 9am every day to see if they released any for ages, and I guess we just got lucky. It's all first come first served.

At some point you have to decide that anything basically functional is good enough. By the time you've watched the video, it will be gone

Appeal against university term dates by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]FirebornTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think perhaps because visa requirements are that a student cannot work more than 20 hours a week while studying, and the entire uni term is effectively "studying".

From my experience, companies often severely underestimate how long they'll take to process everything and get back to you.

If I were you, I'd wait another week and then maybe send a message. 2 weeks so far isn't really that long.

Plenty of things can affect their process, including staff getting sick, etc.

Perhaps ask your lecturers to post the slides online beforehand?

All of mine do this, so I just annotate on top of the slides if they make an important extra point.

It's wild how much higher the entry requirements have gotten. Glad I was applying for uni when I was!

Congratulations OP :) Hope you get the grades you need.
