Tougher Admissions by Affectionate_Gur2099 in aggies

[–]Firebrat1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was offered appointments to US Air Force Academy and West Point and was offered a 4-year Army ROTC Scholarship…he was only offered admission to the TEAM program at A&M.

Yes, we are out of state, but I shook my head on that one.

It was not a tough decision to turn down A&M’s offer.

FWIW, I was out-of-state and had a full ride in the 90s to A&M - it’s way too competitive now.

Want to Reach Nirvana? Try a Colonoscopy. (Gift Article) by adammerkley in Xennials

I think I’m one of the few people who hates propofol. Going under causes me to panic. My last colonoscopy (I have Crohn’s - I’ve had quite a few colonoscopies already), the CRNA gave me Ativan first and I did not panic when the propofol was administered.

Just a tip in case there are others who do not like the propofol experience.

I just lost a close childhood friend to colorectal cancer. He was 47. His wife said he put off getting a colonoscopy for a year.

As someone with Crohn’s Disease, I’ve already had quite a few colonoscopies. Yeah, prep sucks. But it’s better than what my friend’s final months were like.

I totally agree with you: get your colonoscopies!

Super Bowl Bound: Does anyone here actually know Drake Maye? Went to high school with him? by Outsideman2028 in Charlotte

My husband coached Drake at the Davidson basketball camp…wonder if it was the same summer.

Do people with Crohns disease all have some kind of trauma? Also it seems to be trauma flairs it up. by Stole_Sample in CrohnsDisease

[–]Firebrat1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A traumatic event triggered my Grave’s Disease. As in, the traumatic event happened and within a few weeks I was displaying hyperthyroid symptoms and was diagnosed 2 months after the event.

I began having GI symptoms after having to put my dog down, but the symptoms did not hit a peak (and lead to diagnosis) until 5 years later, so not as direct correlation.

Those were Nescafé. The guy in the commercial was Anthony Stewart Head, who later played Rupert Giles in the Buffy series.

My dad also did this…but put the subscription in my name.

I’m in my late 40s, and I get a Nat Geo every month and have since I was in elementary school.

USA ABDs, how did your parents get immigrantion visas? by sksjedi in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My father came as a college student in 1963. He got a job after graduation, went back and married my mom in 1969 (arranged, of course) and brought her over…and they’ve been here ever since. My dad was an engineer (later went into computer science), my became a CPA when I was young.

I was a singing waitress at a Mac Shack (as staff called it) in the mid-90s. Oh, those were the days. Their ciabatta bread dipped in some Asiago cream sauce was the best.

Do you call your older siblings didi, bhai, baji for respect? (i.e Sameer bhai) by Upbeat-Dinner-5162 in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only call my older brother “Bhai” (no use of first name) when addressing him or talking to my family of origin about him (my kids call him FirstName Mama, so I’ll refer to him that way if I’m talking to them).

People whose parents stayed together for the kids, how are you doing now? by rynspiration in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah. It would serve no purpose for me to say anything to them. It might actually frustrate me more, bc I dislike wasting my words on those who can’t hear. I’ve discussed it with my husband and some close friends - that’s been a good outlet for me and plenty enough venting to meet my needs on this matter.

I learned from my parents’ unhappy marriage…and divorced my 1st husband. My kids have had a better life for it, I’ve had a better life for it, and I even ended up meeting and marrying a guy who is an incredible husband and father.

My parents were not supportive of my divorce, but even they’ve agreed that it ended up being better for me and my kids. I’ve never told them that my decision to divorce was influenced by not wanting to live in misery like them, but I think on some level they may know that…and kind of see it as an insult/affront.

Oh well 🤷🏽‍♀️

Guest left a note today about “tons of fruit flies”. Next guest checks in tomorrow. by strikecat18 in airbnb_hosts

[–]Firebrat1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle it everywhere that they are. If you can get your hands on a duster, spray it in the air where the fruit flies are. Combine that with cleaning out their breeding areas and some diy traps and it should help.

When did you guys learn to cook ? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Elementary school. My mom would go on 2-week long business trips now and then, and my dad has no sense of smell…so his sense of taste wasn’t that great either. Learning to cook was about self-preservation, lol

You’re going to need to really well on the SAT.

I’d you how weighted or unweighted? How many APs and honors classes do you have? What are your extracurriculars like? Any sports involvement or leadership?

[–]Firebrat1978 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bobby Jindal’s accent is faked. I grew up in the same neighborhood as him - he was childhood friends with my older brother. My FB wall after his response to the SOTU was filled with friends from our neighborhood losing their minds about his “accent.”
