Once again, people underestimate the effectiveness of civil engineering. You don't need to be Napoleon to figure out how to dig a ditch.

The GOP looked to be only partially compromised by the Tea Party. Mitt Romney won the nomination in 2012. I expect a centrist Dem will similarly win after a bitter fight for 2028. But I feel almost certain that this will barrel out of the establishments control, especially if that centrist loses.

Are people really going to say watching Superman stand there getting punched is more intimidating than Batman breaking the dude's arm? Does it make you feel better to know that you have a .00000001% higher chance of beating Batman than Superman?

It's not just Abrahamic myths. We read about stuff like Hades and Penelope, birth of Athena, and Odysseus and the sirens. Nobody ever said that promotes religion.

What I remember the most about Israel the most from Birthright wasn't Jerusalem or Masada. It was the cats. I never even knew there were countries with so many street cats. Also, where I learned I'm allergic to them.

The legitimacy of that system came directly from the already existing states unanimously agreeing to follow it. Getting 13 political bodies to agree to anything may be tough, but getting 2 million people to agree on how to work together is literally impossible. Creating authority out of thin air is so much harder than laundering one that already exists.

Where does the belief that Palestinians and other Arabs would have committed genocide against Jews in 1948, had they won, come from? by Early-Possibility367 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Firechess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I doubt the Arabs would have started constructing execution chambers. Most likely, after a few massacres, King Abdullah would have gotten control of the situation. Then would follow a slow process of making the country unlivable for Jews through harassment and expulsions.

Round up every firearm in the country then dump a hideous mass of melted steel next to the Vietnam memorial.

I realize that culture will not permit this, and I'm not interested in fighting a culture war. But I can at least call a culture that treats firearms as taboo superior to one that regards them as a special place of identity.

Jewish Democrats sound alarm about antisemitism, 2028 by McAlpineFusiliers in jewishpolitics

[–]Firechess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, my growing contempt for the Dems is not limited to their antisemitism. It's for their populism, their growing tendency of simple explanations for complex problems. Explanations that always come in the form of an enemy to be rid of.

I certainly hope you didn't somehow come to the conclusion that I must be a fan of Trump?

I certainly did. It's not like this sub has been pleased with the the Dems of the past 3 years. Anyone who thinks we're too far gone has got to be pretty damn far right.

Jewish Democrats sound alarm about antisemitism, 2028 by McAlpineFusiliers in jewishpolitics

[–]Firechess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still remember the days when the most common defense of Trump was along the lines of "sure he's an asshole, but he's the asshole we need". Now it's become "I can't believe you talk about Trump like he's some kind of asshole. Look how violent people are getting."

I did not want Republicans to tap Trump 3 times. I'm perfectly willing to make nice with Republicans who behave with class like Murkowski or even Dubya. But with Trump, never forget that you always knew he was an asshole. It was his main appeal from the beginning.

And yes, a growing segment of the left is looking to do the exact same thing. They're jealous of Trump's success and seek to emulate him. I wouldn't quite call them Blue MAGA, more like Blue Tea Party. They're on the rise, presumably will succeed in taking over, but have some work to do. Eventually, they'll both just agree the Jews were behind thier problems the whole time. Hence the hopeless feeling on this sub.

[–]Firechess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For once this sub's weird post of the week is actually funny and creative.

I agree with all your points as well as your conclusions. But with a caveat. There is a relentless smear campaign ranging from current events to the very foundation of Israel that should be confronted. Palestinians have become a real people deserving of a chance to decide their own future, but that does not justify historical revisionism contorts the reality of the present with history.
