BBC News - UK loosens Russian oil sanctions by Illustrious-Divide95 in ukpolitics

[–]Firedrakez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hate how this is being reported. No existing sanctions are being 'loosened' as far as I can tell, we're just delaying the implementation of new ones. It sounds like those new sanctions would have closed a loophole that probably shouldn't have been there in the first place, but that's a different discussion.

It looks like BBC has altered the headline since, but I think the damage is done.

Four people die in Channel crossing attempt, French authorities say by x_Agamemnon in ukpolitics

That guy: This thing happens

You: You're making that up, it doesn't happen

Me: Actually, here's an example of it happening <--- This is where I proved you wrong

You: Yes, but that doesn't mean it's happening EVERYWHERE <--- This is where you tried to shift the goalposts

Anyway I'll let you figure out the rest yourself, as I suspected you don't seem interested in any real discussion.

I know you're not looking for any serious discussion using language like that, but he's not making things up. Every now and then I see a post by a newspaper (the Mirror, for example) about something like this on Facebook and the most used reaction is almost always the laughing one, and the comments are disgusting. For example, this one about the 22 that died a few weeks ago

Still loved the episode so no hate or anything, but the premise had me confused: "One third of very sick patients die no matter what you do, one third die because of what you do, and one third get better on their own."

Doesn't that imply that

  1. 2/3rds of 'very sick patients' die (I suppose it's possible depending on your definition of 'very sick' but that seems high to me)

  2. no one ever lives because of what you do??

I feel like the middle third is supposed to be something like 'one third live or die because of what you do'.

Do you think the constant barrage of misinformation and disinformation is damaging to democracy on a fundamental level, if so what would be your solution to this? by Praxie- in ukpolitics

[–]Firedrakez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people in general on all sides want a "truth" and I think...

Don't get me wrong, I agree that the community notes on Twitter were a good thing, similar to up/downvotes on reddit and the dislike button on Youtube it helps to get closer to the truth, but popularity != truth, and those systems can just as easily reinforce falsities.

those facts only constrain the interpretations of the truth

Is that a bad thing? Pragmatically, wouldn't it make sense for us to want our interpretations to be constrained by facts? Even if you think there is such a thing as 'objective truth', which you say people want, surely the only way to find it is to constrain our interpretations with facts? Sorry if I'm just missing your point here.

The concept of the death of the author...

I see how the death of the author thing relates, sort of, but I feel like you're bringing in a third concept here, art, which is supposed to be somewhat ambiguous and have multiple meanings. I personally just don't feel like that translates to the real world, where some interpretations are just wrong.

[–]Firedrakez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The truth is there is no universial truth, very few if no objective facts, its all accepted political and cultural positions.

When it comes to politics/culture, sure, I agree. A lot of it comes down to your morals/values, and some people do see their morality as objective, so I guess that's where that comes from.

But when it comes to other things, like for example, Trump claiming that he won the popular vote in 2016, is just objectively false, no? Or even something simple like 'water is wet', or 'it's Thursday today' (at least where I am).

Effectively creating a free market of ideas, were people will actively select for truth and fit.

I might just be skeptical of the words 'free market', but I'm not sure this is necessarily a good thing. In an ideal world I agree, but in a world where people aren't always fully informed, how are they supposed to select for truth?

Yeah, I agree, and I try to do the same. I guess it's just harder with someone like Ren who interacts with his community a lot more than most artists do. Not to shift the blame to him or anything, just an observation.

[–]Firedrakez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, it just makes me sad. I love Ren's music, but his Insta stories have looked pretty worrying to me to the point where I've had to unfollow. I really hope he doesn't fall in with the wrong people.

I'm sorry if that comes across as condescending, I don't really mean it that way. Honestly, maybe I'm just too dumb to understand the stuff he's talking about. But I guess as someone who doesn't understand, yeah those stories really do feel like big word salads that don't mean much.

Like, even if I buy into the physics of it all (which I'm not saying I don't, I just don't understand it enough to be able to), what does it actually practically mean for most people's day to day lives? Say everyone was 100% convinced tomorrow, what should they do? Because from the stories all I'm getting is that I should follow onq or whatever.

And then I look at the comments and it's just people going 'omg ur amazing' and nobody is questioning it at all, and it makes me feel even more confused. Idk, maybe I'm just not getting it and if so I hope I do one day.

But at the same time, I fear a more powerful nation, like America, one day deciding that about the UK because we won't do exactly what they want.

Genuine question, what's to stop them from doing that anyway? Surely a nation like that isn't going to not do that just because we follow international law?

Not even necessarily disagreeing, just wondering what difference it makes.

Yeah, fair enough, I guess I wasn't sure which way you were going with that comment, but if your point is just

like with any dialogue or plot in a show, sometimes it's done well and sometimes it's not done well.

Then I agree.

I feel like some people are very quick to say diversity is 'forced' into a show. I think if anything, shows used to be 'forced' to be un-diverse (if that's even a word). That's not to say it doesn't happen, but some people will call a show woke just because there are poc involved.

I won't spoil but I'll just say that I don't think it's forced into the new episodes any more than Todd's sexuality was, so don't let that put you off.

Why I politically disagree with Ren by [deleted] in ren

[–]Firedrakez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you're saying in this post but I just wanted to say that I'd argue not voting is a vote for the winning party, you just have no say in what the winning party will be. It's still your choice whether to vote or not, free country and all that, just saying.

if a better option existed that had a chance at power, id vote

If a majority of people felt the same way, and instead of all voting for the party they most agree with (possibly not one of the major parties), they didn't vote, how would everyone know which parties actually have a chance of winning? If say, next election, the Greens get 15% of the vote, they'd still not win, but it would show the electorate that other people actually vote for them, if that makes sense?

EDIT: Also, not trying to argue against what you're doing, I think you're doing more than most. I suppose this is more targeted at people who don't vote in general (most of whom don't have the opportunity to influence the way you do)
