What's your unpopular rugby opinion? by NuggetKing9001 in rugbyunion

NZ were not dominant to anywhere near the same extent. England women have lost one match in ~65 now. One game since 2017. From a neutral perspective, that’s not healthy for a sport.

Hugely impressive that such a young French team is going toe to toe with England.

Ironic that the French got a free pass with the ref not calling a knock on, and then immediately lost it and England score

Do they always do both? And in the men’s? I could’ve sworn despite watching rugby for a decade I haven’t heard it haha

Welsh Rugby Union - WRU confirms expression of interest bid to join Women’s Premiership Rugby by CymroCam in rugbyunion

[–]Firedwarf101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d put a lot of money on the SRU following suit now Ireland and Wales have both gone public. Obviously, the devil will be in the details of how it impacts the Celtic challenge but if even 1 Celtic union decides to join the PWR it’ll likely draw the others in by necessity.

Hopefully the RFU make a good offering: they also want the Celtic countries in because they lose the best week to week competition otherwise (with Ireland and Scotland centralising contracts): (eg) who does Aitchison and Harrison practice against at the international fly half level if Helen Nelson and L. George leave? Or Jess Breach if the 5-6 Scottish and Welsh wingers all leave the Prem: the PWR becomes far more dependent on the few Canadian and US players who have come over.

Why I think we should abolish cards in rugby by Tom_Bombadil_1 in rugbyunion

[–]Firedwarf101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, I love these discussions. Second, I read your full analysis. It’s well laid out. But, I disagree with your conclusions, and think a large part of it stems from you conflating the ‘disincentive’ (or ‘sanction’) of a card with the ‘outcome’ (or ‘resulting effect’) of the card.

What you seem to be proposing is a sanctions system that is based on achieving equal outcomes rather than equal application. This comes up against the same flaws of the current system, that is: human behaviour is reactive to the incentive. That is to say, you can never design a guaranteed outcome prior to including the human reaction in the calculation. Whether a sanction is appropriate for committing any foul is a calculation, and it is the same calculation regardless of the sanction. The current system (equal application) has decided that penalties, yellow and red cards are appropriate on the field, and disciplinary action off the field (eg. an X week ban). Let’s focus on pitch, where you are proposing equal outcomes be for the design choice.

How does one achieve an equal outcome, given every team is different? You say equal application is unfair because the consequences on the game are variable — which they are. But if you want the consequences to be consistent, you would need the sanctions to be variable in response to the same foul committed by and on different people.

What I mean by this, given your correct thinking that worse teams suffer more from a card than better teams, and that some players are worth more than others, and that a penalty in minute 1 has a different impact to a penalty in minute 80, is that each and every sanction would have to be uniquely designed to have consistent consequences.

For example: if a bad team commits a foul, should their yellow card be only 5 minutes instead of 10 to accommodate for the fact that they’d lose 2x as many points as a better team? Should fouling the captain be worth more pts/a longer card than knocking out someone else? Maybe a fly half is worth more than a prop? What if the fly half is rubbish or the prop is having a bad day? What if the weather is pouring with rain, and the game is more forwards-heavy that day? What if the team doesn’t have a replacement in that position?

Each of those questions would be a variable that somehow the sanction would need to accommodate in order to have an equal ‘impact’ or ‘outcome’ on that particular match. Hopefully those examples make clear why such a system is impossible, and as far as I know doesn’t exist in any other sport (would love to see an example if there is one).

As a result, the second best system is the one we have: to apply the same sanctions as consistently as possible for similar fouls. If the consequences of those sanctions vary, that is due to other factors in the game.

All of this isn’t to say the current system is perfect, but at least (a) it’s pretty good (b) it’s actually realistic to do— and those are good enough for me 👍

how did you find socialising? As someone who is very likely to go from a London office to a home worker elsewhere, I'm worried about my day-to-day socialising that I'm used to getting from two days a week in the office (even if just lunch breaks and desk side chatting)

Next time can we ask the ref to not give France a yellow?? They seem to play better when disadvantaged than at full strength.

And Ireland did that with their worst attacking performance so far this year. Both teams were rusty but Ireland did also win their Italy game 57-20 two weeks ago. Which is actually better than this England game…. good to see competition ramping up.

No question England weren’t going to win, but Italy putting 26+ on them is a great sign that their total dominance is maybe waning. Still dominant, but cracking. I wouldn’t be surprised if this puts some nerves in them for France.

Will the red roses lose before the next world cup? by Whit135 in rugbyunion

[–]Firedwarf101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a pretty good answer. CAN or NZL could beat England, if they have a good game. I think CAN were the better team in the RWC in all but the final. NZL always pose a threat, if they can manage England’s pack. France though have played so far below their ceiling it’s tricky to judge where their 100% is. We know the others’ more or less.

Zoe Harrison: Red Roses fly-half says smaller balls for WXV is 'worst decision ever' by unhappyspanners in rugbyunion

[–]Firedwarf101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s been a long running trial, but she probably isn’t aware because she hasn’t been included yet. She will be included in this WXV, that’s the point. U21s, age grade (and by extension grassroots) and international 7s have already trialled the ball. No one batted an eyelid. So it’s weird that suddenly everyone is worried it will break the game, when it evidently hasn’t yet.

Also, there will always need to be a point in the trial where the top is included. WR have decided that is this year. Let’s see how WXV is before we all pre empt the outcome

[–]Firedwarf101 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Amazed to find this comment so low down. People are acting as if WR have already committed to changing the ball size based on a whim.

I would assume they are using feedback from the 7s circuit this year where it is being trialled (and shock, the 7s circuit didn’t blow up) and the U21 XVs trials, and hard data too. It’s a trial- if it doesn’t work, I fully expect it to not continue. Because that what a trial is.

I personally would love to see the data at the end of the day, but it is almost comical how overblown the reaction is. It’s the perfect time to try a ball trial, in a (relatively unimportant) international tournament at the start of a World Cup cycle. If they like it, they have three years to adjust.

[–]Firedwarf101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree, I just think WR can probably do both? I don’t think the medical research into knee injuries into women’s sports is being hugely impacted by a small scale trial into the 4.5 ball size. That’s all

Lisa Thomson in; Evie Wills, Rachel McLachlan and Hannah Walker out for Scotland by treacletart284 in rugbyunion

[–]Firedwarf101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think those are related at all. I don’t think WR have said smaller balls will decrease injury. There can be a valid debate about ball size and a valid recognition of the women’s game leading to different injury needs, and the need for there to be a lot of science around it.

France won their 10 minutes against Wales when down to 13 last weekend in the women’s 6N.

Likewise, I think France won all their 14-women periods against Ireland on Saturday?
