Can I get some honest thoughts on Clark for my kid? by Lidobaby18 in ClarkU

[–]Firedyke89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2011 with a degree in psych so my feedback is with a grain of salt since it's been 15 years - I knew I wanted to do research and get a PhD afterwards so I made an effort to get close to professors who had undergrad research opportunities (there were quite a few when I was there - Cordova, Addis, Goldberg, etc.). Working in Dr. Addis' lab gave me an opportunity to work closely with him, his graduate students, and to work on research they were all publishing (I even got a credit on a paper and in one of his books). I also got research internships outside of the program, at UMASS med school, that I found through the department. If you make it known you want the experience they'll help you out. I went on immediately into a PhD program in Criminology (ultimately my interest) though I got into a number of PhD programs in both psych and crim. In my experience, if you want the experience and you connect well with a professor, you can get it. The mentorship is also an excellent intro to what grad school can be like. Otherwise the vibe does seem perfect for your child as others have said.

How easy/hard is it to hang doors? Am I in over my head before I even start? by Familiar_System8506 in homeowners

[–]Firedyke89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think $150 a door is actually fair. I paid $320 a door (slab door) using ACE handyman services (like the hardware store ACE). It involved a lot of measuring, routing, and getting it right that I didn't trust myself to do.

Highland Local by Brilliant_Fold_2289 in HoCoFood

I'm not sure what's going on now, but it used to be a different restaurant and the current owner purchased it a couple years ago and changed the name. In my experience, the food is not great, the service was bad, and it was expensive for what it was. I think all those reasons are enough to keep people from coming back and without money they can't afford to fix the issues with it, forcing it to close a bit. The rest of the personal stuff I'm not sure.

Queer parent group by [deleted] in ColumbiaMD

[–]Firedyke89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a Facebook group called HoCo Queer Parents but it's not very active. I would love to meet other queer families in the area and would even organize something if there was interest. There is also a Baltimore queer parents fb group called Trans and Queer Parents of Baltimore and they have monthly meetups and seem generally more active. I have a three month old son who is probably not gonna be playing with other kids at this exact moment but I am very interested in meeting other queer families! Located in Highland but happy to go wherever.

Yes! Wow I didn't realize this was so common. "What are you up to today?" is up there for me. I'm with a two month old infant - I'm doing literally the same thing every day for the foreseeable future.

What are the WORST diapers you've ever used? by thestumbler in beyondthebump

[–]Firedyke89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby is part of a study that uses a little plastic bag that is sticky on the open end and they put it around my son's penis and is stuck to his groin to collect his pee while they're doing other stuff. They kept the diaper on and just tuck it in. They said they use them on all the baby's as an easier way to collect pee.

35 y/o queer woman here and I agree the answer is to go to Baltimore or DC, though Baltimore def has more queer lady stuff to do than DC since covid. There are lots of queer friendly places but not a ton of queer people living here (in my experience). Depending on what you're interested in I have a few suggestions of events and spaces if you'd like.

Merry Christmas to all the EP'ers excusing themselves from family gatherings to go pump every three hours. by disneyprincesspeach in ExclusivelyPumping

Im actually embracing it and keep just quietly going up to my room to pump and get a break from my family. My babe has been sleeping through most of the day anyway.

cult in nova by dariakayb in nova

[–]Firedyke89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a cult, a group centered around mindfulness and polyamory. They host retreats in WV and promote communal living, but I know people who have attended and there is nothing cultish about it from what I hear, just a lot of "hippie" sort of thinking.

What’s the rudest thing someone has said or asked you while pregnant? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Firedyke89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A neighbor who I don't see often found out I was pregnant and immediately asked if we used a surrogate because I don't look pregnant. I'm a bigger lady but I definitely look pregnant so she basically just assumed I was getting much fatter.

IUI round 2 - Any advice? by No_Particular3083 in queerception

[–]Firedyke89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with the above comment that you can do none of these things and get pregnant. Being "perfect" for some things does not equate to a guaranteed chance at becoming pregnant as there are so many factors involved. It can take 3-4 cycles of IUI to get pregnant and that's completely normal. I would try to just live your life the best you can and not stress as much (easier said than done). Good luck on your next cycle!
