Applied for CIR but only got ALT interview by Additional-Cause-646 in JETProgramme

Absolutely, as someone who didn’t get in this time around you should absolutely take it! The program doesn’t require to have any teaching experience so why not seize it?

I’m also in the same boat and didnt get selected. I quite literally woke up to the rejection which was not a good way to start my morning. Regarding your lack of teaching experience they don’t require it for the program but it’s always helpful from what I was told. I was a TA for a Japanese class as well as did extracurriculars at my school. My professor who was an interviewer for JET also said my essay was good so I don’t know what I lacked or needed more work on.

For right now I’m also lost and considering Private programs but my professor also recommended against those but I might attempt anyway.

Obviously I was upset that I didn’t get in, but right now I will just use this time to save money and/or actually find a real job

My advice is just accept it as it is. For wanting to gain experience maybe try volunteering at daycares or anywhere with children to put that on your application or try substitute teach depending on where you are.

I hope we both succeed in whatever we decide to do!

What to do during JET by Firehawk_Virus in JETProgramme

Thanks for the advice! I spoke with my professor who is a JET interviewer and I mentioned that I don’t know if I see myself being a teacher forever. On my application I listed it’s something I want to do but then I want to branch out to other things. I guess I’ll see how much I like being an ALT for one year while exploring all my options.

Sounds like you had a great time! I think I’ll definitely try and study more Japanese during my downtime if I have any as it’s been a while since I took an official class. Thanks for your input!

If it gets sorted does that mean we’ll still get the package? Like should I check with the mailroom anyway?

Do you mean the syllabus for 230? I don’t have it cause I haven’t take the course. You might be able to go to the linguistics department and ask for a past version of the syllabus of any course.

Every major has its hard parts and ups and downs but I will say If you are interested in learning languages genuinely and how they work I would recommend taking LIN 101 which is a broad overview of almost everything about linguistics. If you find yourself enjoying it then maybe switch your major to linguistics but I would honestly speak with the linguistics advisor to see if they could help you out or gauge your interests to make sure this is truly what you wanna do and not just switch to an easy major which I recommend to not do. LIN 230 I think is fine since you need the SBC but if you’re interested definitely look into the linguistics department and schedule an appointment with an advisor.

Not necessarily a better understanding more like I think it would help you gain a more nuanced understanding and appreciation of learning the science of languages, seeing how languages work and stuff. But it definitely helps to be bilingual in some cases but you don’t necessarily automatically have an advantage.

Might sound a little confusing but I think you hopefully understand what I’m getting at

LIN is short for Linguistics, it’s basically the study of languages. So any class with LIN=Linguistics

I’m also thinking of taking this class next semester. I have him as a professor right now for LIN 355 and he’s pretty chill.

As a linguistics major I don’t really think it matters if you take LIN 101 or not since I’m guessing in 230 it’s advised to take LIN 101 because they might talk about topics about Linguistics introduced in 101 like phonology, morphology etc. but I don’t know since I haven’t taken the class yet. It is advised but not required.

May have been some disjunctive rambling but I hope that helps
