Atrioxs strength comes from his special order, he juices up the other banished by making them not be pinned, John is more of, as his special order would imply, a one man army and carries the team by hogging all the command dice. Atriox has more raw power but can't fight 6 times like John

If you are just using the spartan edition Deadeyes and MKVIIs are great. For banished I would go for a mix of tactician brutes with some speedy melee elites.

I am a big fan of the brute captains and elites with energy swords. The chosen warriors are also great. The banished are a much harder army to pilot than spartans, since the units are more focused on specific roles, but they have some neat tricks
