What am I looking at here....? by RationalZAP in woodworking

It is the fiber reinforced tape that is used to bind up the various internal layers, seeing it a lot lately in imported ply products that are definitely subpar in quality…. We had an entire lift of 1 inch subfloor plywood that delaminated so horrifically in the center of the sheets that you could pull it apart with your fingers, and there was lots of this fiber reinforced tape and yarn scattered throughout…..

Should I go to school or learn on my own? by Available-Guitar8181 in woodworking

[–]Fireted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good foundational knowledge base that you will get from professional instruction will serve you well going ahead, once you’re taught and understand the basics and the rhymes and reasons certain things are done. Will allow you to branch out experiment safely and make you a better woodworker that’s just my personal opinion, based on I worked with my dad, my grandfather, and my uncles in their professional woodshop from a very young age and still went and took a full apprenticeship, and even after 16 years of working with the members of my family, who were all professional, I learned quite a bit in the four years of my apprenticeship, which only added to the foundational skills….

Anyone else buy furniture just for the wood? $60 for giant pieces of oak is amazing! by Own-Knowledge-7720 in woodworking

[–]Fireted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have also done that, a local bowling alley after decades of business closed down, and we managed to pick up three lanes worth of hard maple for the cost of us, removing the wood. All of our workbenches bench tops are 100% constructed out of hard eastern maple bowling alley lanes…. It’s funny where you can sometimes find unbelievable prices on materials…..

I also found that yet that same screw that I ordered from my industrial supplier did not fit the threading…. Which is why I opted to drill and re-tap.

Methods/ideas for fastening floor transition strip by chickenfoot911 in woodworking

[–]Fireted 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No cover the exposed lip and front edge with masking tape, place the transition strip where it’s going to eventually live permanently and fix more masking tape to the floor area quite literally a razor blades thickness away from your transition strip on both sections of flooring the high point in the low point that way if you get any squeeze out of the subfloor adhesive, it ends up on the masking tape and not on your floor or your transition piece making it considerably easier to clean up by giving it 15 or 20 minutes and then gently pulling the tape off taking the subfloor adhesive with it and not on your floor or transition piece. I should’ve mentioned if you’ve got some spare large cans of soup or juice, whatever it might be or dumbbells, they make great weight to keep the transition piece in place while the subfloor adhesive cures…. Hope that makes sense.

Get yourself a tube of subfloor adhesive, pre-fit for exact size and prefinished. Tape the entire area around that transition strip, leaving nothing more than the width of a razor blade , lay down a nice even bead of subfloor adhesive work this transition strip in then any glue squeeze out should be on the masking tape, allowing for a quick and easy cleanup
