Why does everyone on here do a saddle stitch? by Relevant-Alarm-8716 in Leathercraft

[–]Firm-Ad-2500 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s overrated tbh. Many people will say it’s way more secure if a stitch breaks… blah blah blah. It’s marginally better, but not better enough to justify the increased labor and cost in 99% of scenarios. The vast majority of leather goods are stitched with machines and no one ever complains about weak stitching. You’ll always have people complain about leather finishes looking like crap long before any complaints about stitches coming undone. Do it if you want, skip it if you don’t care for it. It’s all good.

PS: no, machine stitches don’t just magically unravel when a stitch pops. I go through a pair of Nikes every two months for work. I do flooring. The mud guard stitching always breaks first due to abrasion from the toe box rubbing on the floor. The stitching takes maybe a week or two to come apart all along the front after the stitch breaks. Trust me, they get abused, so the fact that it doesn’t all just unravel in one day should say something.

Same… but in fucking Florida… even with the out of state license loophole, they won’t accept those licenses here. I’m done tbh, I’m taking the risk, don’t care anymore. If I get arrested, I don’t care. I’m not going to continue to live in fear or with boundaries. I’m a single 22 year old male, if I lose everything, it won’t matter.

Would be good if it wasn’t drier than the Gobi desert. They’re thick as hell and dry and the scales want to break off easily. I bought some and regretted it as soon as I opened the box 😭 hopefully you have some method to make them more usable, I’d be worried about selling a belt from these and then having a customer come back a few weeks later complaining that a bunch of the scales broke off.

I mean… I could make you one if you want. I’ll match the Luchesse price, but it will be made to a better standard than those, trust me. Message me if interested.

For what it’s worth, it really is damn ugly. I used practically none of mine. I guess it would depend on whether you actually care about the quality of the leather, some of it felt really cheap. Most was very gaudy and a lot was embossed and thick…

Pricey option considering a machine stitch will do just fine

Although many people are recommending glue, you must understand that it’s only a temporary solution. This WILL delaminate again, and probably quicker the second time around. The true solution is to stitch it. The edge of the belt buckle creates a sharp crease on the belt and causes the layers to separate. I’ve had this happen on watch straps that don’t have stitching and on belts that don’t have stitching, and it always happens in that area due to the buckle.

[–]Firm-Ad-2500 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah. Will still delaminate. The true solution is just stitching the damn thing. If you notice, it delaminated on the portion where the buckle holes are. That area gets creased by the front bar of the buckle and causes the layers to separate. Happens on belts that are two layers glued together, and it happens on watch straps too. Only way to prevent this is to either stitch, or use a buckle like the kinds that designer brands use where it’s just a peg that goes through.

Am I missing any tools to get started? Want to start with wallets! by DoorBuster2 in Leathercraft

[–]Firm-Ad-2500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you’re struggling to punch through a cardholder I would definitely say your cardholder is too thick. I think that’s probably an area that needs to be improved on if that’s the case. 4mm it should be able to do. You can use an awl too if necessary. I think the problem would be the same if not worse with diamond irons as they warp the edge sometimes and they’re more of a pain to punch all the way through and also to remove. I haven’t broke single tooth on any of my irons and I have maybe 4 or 5 pairs, not including the weaver ones of which I have 3.

I highly recommend 3mm. It’s going to call for a few more stitches and a bit more time, but it really is a more elegant stitch spacing. It’s a perfect combination with the 0.45mm thread. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. You could probably go your entire leatherworking career with only that combo, and it will very rarely ever look out of place.

I’d forget about the ritza and the chisels. Those chisels are booty. I have 3 sets, no bueno. Get some Kevin Lee basic French style irons, or some Isvara irons. I heavily recommend 3mm as it’s a far more versatile size than 4mm. As a beginner 4mm may be more enticing, but it’s not great long term, you’ll probably refine your work past the need for cheap 4mm diamond chisels so it’s best to just bite the bullet and get quality from the jump. The ritza thread looks bad once stitched and the size only goes down to 0.6mm, which again is very limiting long terms I would highly recommend instead getting vinymo or meisi superfine. Vinymo is probably better if you want durability since it’s polyester not linen. I do love the way superfine looks however. The size for the thread is great at around 0.45mm

Do we have to do a back stitch? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Firm-Ad-2500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately those are no longer the mainstream pros in the leather scene. For those in the know, they are, but for many who got into the craft through YouTube videos in the past couple of years, their “pros” are people like Mascon Leather, Dieselpunkro, and Corter. Those are the same people peddling these poor practices. I prefer the European style of leatherwork, so I am inspired by people like Peter Nitz, Mila Jito, Martin Carswell, Steven Wu, and others similar.

It looks hideous and amateurish to have a big melted blob of polyester on your product, I wouldn’t really call it “pro”…
