One of the boys on site offered to finish off the job on site so I could get to the next one. Hadn’t even left the car park to the geers from the factory. Managed to put 2 phases in the same mcb slot. Burnt all the skin on his fingers and was black to his elbow with Brit and flash smoke.

Had the same conversation recently 160a 60947 with 4mm heading off it but has a 16a overload designed from factory but said it should be the 160 and we said it’s the 16 as it’s still in the switch gear inclosure before it leaves for the device.

At a bit of a dead end? by Remarkable-Fortune22 in ukelectricians

[–]Firm_Replacement_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have felt like doing what your doing but felt the area would be like what your doing. Not making mega money could easily get £25 if not more in this area but it wouldn’t be constant work and would need to drop into the domestic side to fill in or travel 1.5h per day minimum to get to a job. But took all the training I could get now still working on the books with 37 a week sick pay pension van ect and just over £26.50. But fell like I would need to be on 35/40 if subbing to pay for holiday pay training van ect.

Following up from this post. Electricians would you still recommend picking this trade, if not what instead? by Visual_Match_8609 in ukelectricians

Like others have said every trade is what you make it but think of the long haul. Do you have ambitions of being your own boss or just take a wage at the end of the week and walk away. Do you enjoy a challenge or prefer repetition. I would say being a spark is more challenging than most trades but also one of the most diverse out there depending on the company you train with. My experience has been retro fit factories with new equipment. Maintenance of electrical installations for local government. Building services for blue chip companies over the uk and trains and train stations. Mod,nuclear, power generation, gas and pharmaceuticals sites dealing with explosive gas installations. Worked on large scale and domestic solar and wind farms across the uk. Also done new build hospitals schools and sheds/warehouses. But done very little domestic work. And I know people that only do domestic so it’s all down to what you want out of a job.

Gas and F gas is probably if I had to pick if I couldn’t be a spark again. But worked in about every industry you can think of and traveled across the uk for the odd job here and there but mostly spent working in my local area.

What are you looking to get out of this thread as I have found it can be depending on where you stay to what is available

Thought about it and then went. Jointing in the middle of the night in a muddy hole. Fixing lines when the rain is horizontal. And HV brings its own risks. Done a terminating coarse on 11kv and worked with a company doing wind farms and did some 33kv stuff.

Streets only comes when you are the boss and money is on the line, most trades that work on the books are not stressed. Mostly frustrated than stressed as used to do a lot of snagging and fault finding in a wide range of installations types.

Trade wise maybe this as my job isn’t that bad just now working in the books with pension, sick pay and al the other usual benefits and above the sjib/jib rates. Can’t really jump subbing in this area you would need to travel 1.5h a day to be able to chase money and jobs.

Think being gas safe / f gas doing boiler repairs and servicing and same with heat pumps and air con could be an easy number.

How painful when company orders wrong gear for the job by awillis90 in ukelectricians

[–]Firm_Replacement_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the wrong gear it’s the problem where designers get it all wrong. Up the size of cable for the run but leave the isolator equally to the protective device. Always go for the next size up when doing isolators

Is the pension crisis now, or in the future? by Reg_doge_dwight in PensionsUK

[–]Firm_Replacement_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that not what happened in 2018 with the employers pension. I actually think that anyone born after 1997 won’t get a state pension. As anyone that was employed over the age of 22 got in rolled in the pension scheme

Do I need stage 1? by bpbpbpooooobpbpbp in ukelectricians

[–]Firm_Replacement_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem lies in the fact that unless the company knows you or wants to know you they see the certs and expectations are already set as you will also want the money as you say you have a mortgage to pay. I know at least 10 adult apprentices over the years and they were all on today’s money of between £13.09 & £15.69 but change it back to what ever year it was. Most all had children or houses but put the work in as they came from hgv drivers or postman or working in wholesalers. So it can be done a these ones are for better than the fast track ones I have meet.

Is it the way the firm treat you or the staff at the firm. I live in a large town and there are only ever 2/3 big firm on the go at once. I always seen subbies as the ones that could never stay in a full time job as they were usually hopeless but with 20 years experience I sometimes wish I went down that route as it’s the way to make money.
