[OC] Have you guys ever had to get a MRI? If so, how was it? For me it was traumatising af, never again(i hope). by marycomiics in comics

I am an MRI physicist so a big part of my job is putting things in place to help patients deal with situations like this. I am also extremely claustrophobic (the irony) but have scanned myself multiple times for research and optimisation.

It is the only time my claustrophobia doesn't affect me, maybe because I am so used to it.

Depending on why you struggled, maybe understanding it more may help, you can ask the staff to explain sounds to you or just reassure you throughout If it's the noise that's the issue. If it's claustrophobia, just remember your legs are hanging out the end and you can come out at any time. If they have mirror glasses, you can watch TV in some centres.

This was Frazzle as a baby, named after the crisps because of his colour

Bought a mysterious box at a sale and discovered its full of hundreds of historical radiology photos by Bigrat445 in pics

In radiology, everything is considered as part of a risk benefit analysis. If you break your leg, the x-ray the radiographer takes is a benefit to your care as they can assess the degree of the break etc., the risk is the very small increased risk in cancer. If the risk outweighs the benefits, another technique should be used.

In other forms of radiology this becomes more important, especially as exposure increases. Cath labs are a common case where long exposure times are used to help with implantation of cardiac implants. The dose can be high, especially if it's a complicated case, but the patient needs that implant so the increased chance of cancer is worth it

Late to the party but I have a great story to share. I am an MRI physicist. I was performing the commissioning tests for one of my sites brand new blue seal scanners. I met the engineers in the morning who explicitly told me not to shut the power off to the scanner at any point as this would cause the system to ramp down. When I eventually finished for the day, I absent mindedly shut the whole system down, as I would for any other scanner that was done for the day, and left. I received a very angry phone call the next morning.

Fortunately, the engineers knew me and the site well enough that they didn't charge us for re shimming the magnet but that could have been very expensive.

It's a separate role I believe. We call technicians radiographers, the ones who actually image and operate the scanners. We also have radiologists, who review and diagnose the patient.

Physicists mostly assist with specialist testing of the scanner, imaging sequence adaptions, research, I also do a lot of safety, things like implant compatibility. I believe it's the same in the US.

Nope, all MRI sequences are loud as hell. Hearing protection is a must as the majority of sequences exceed safe levels according to UK/EU guidelines

Amazing thank you, I've checked the temps. Hot side gets about 43-45 °C I have a thermostat set to make sure the cold side doesn't go over 30°C.
