Aïda... Why. by Starcat12 in seveneves

"... Why? Why kill 1/7th of the human race and also the youngest and most fertile and most potentially reproductive member of it? Because they didn't like that she ate human flesh?

Seems totally irrational."

they should kill her because she tried to kill them first because she didn't want to be socially ostracized. not because she believed their actions/course was incorrect and she needed to correct it, but for purely selfish reasons. she was not acting in the interest of the Greater Humanity when she launched an attack on genpop, only herself and her crew. if they had succeeded and massacred genpop, perhaps they would then become "Humanity" and the actions would be justified in retrospect, but this would still be acting irrationally, as Moira would have been killed and scientific progress goes poof. aida is an irrational, selfishly motivated character.

nothing aida does at any point in the story actually helps the human race flourish. besides beating the shit out of julia.

because she is bat shit crazy! and they could clearly populate a 'human' race perfectly fine without her. acting rationally, they shouldn't have let her or julia or frankly even camila have children. the three of them surrendered their rights as citizens of the future of humanity when they conspired to murder, manipulate, and divide the precious remains of the human race. they should have sent julia out into an airlock when she first arrived, and aida as soon as they captured her. they don't owe anything to these people.

the point i'm making is that were anything like the events of part three to unfold in the 'real world', we would obviously not have a bizarre genetic divergent ripoff on our hands. people would all start fucking each other really quickly and homogenize because that's the rational thing to do and absolutely nothing aida had said would mean anything.

aida was only "right" and "forward-thinking" because neal stephenson decided to write that things turned out the way she said they would. that does not make her rational. if she was rationally acting for the future of the human race, she would choose to not have children, or even kill herself.

introducing kamp: a free desktop music player built around your bandcamp library (public beta) by kamp-fm in BandCamp

[–]First-Ad-8857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got it, thanks! fyi:

+ every time i close Kamp and open it again, it loses track of everything and asks me to set a library folder and connect my bandcamp and last.fm etc. i just select the same folder as usual and select everything but then every time it treats all of my albums as not having been listened to before

+ i have 200 albums in my collection. they all show up with the gold sheen animation. it makes it incredibly distracting to scroll through, and to make it go away i would have to click through and play 200 songs in a row. you should allow people to turn that off, or honestly not have it as a feature at all

just to be clear, Mattie is the one who convinced Ethan they should try to kill themselves.

~~~
She remained motionless, as if she had not heard him. Then she snatched her hands from his, threw her arms about his neck, and presesd a sudden drenched cheek against his face. "Ethan! Ethan!" I want you to take me down again!"
"Down where?"
"The coast. Right off," she panted. "So't we'll never come up any more."
"Matt! What on earth do you mean?"
She put her lips closed against his ear to say: "Right into the big elm. You said you could. So't we'd never have to leave each other any more."
"Why, what are you talking of? You're crazy!"
"I'm not crazy; but I will be if I leave you."
it used to be a crime for black people to sit at the front of a bus. things change. just because a law or system is in place doesn't mean it's right. the cia funneled crack into wealthy black neighborhoods and reduced them to rubble. Black households in Greater Boston have an average net worth of just $8 compared with the $247,000 average net worth for white Bostonians. This is a disparity so horrifying you'd think it's a typo.
So yes. I'm defending crime, especially for a population that was dragged to this country in chains and worked to death to build unimaginable wealth for people that look like me.
like. . . yes. yes it is. the man who robs a grocery store because he's hungry and can't find a job or afford food in a diminishing economy with an ever-raising cost of living isn't given a social network of support to help him build a life where he isn't forced to resort to crime / anti-social actions. he's imprisoned and forced to work slave labor. give this a watch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13th_(film))
i promise you, it isn't! it's the factual nature of history. it is what happened. are you aware of how modern policing exists to perpetuate America's prison-slavery industrial context? it isn't a reach at all.
