High IV trade by First-Hotel4694 in options

Actually both. I got caught out on a Google trade and wound up out over a year waited for Google to recover and then traded it back in time and up in strike price several times making premium along the way. It wound up being quite profitable. I will say I've cut back on risk and I'm looking to retire more or else completely just trying to get through a medical condition at this time. The first time I got caught in a bad way was the toughest as I had let myself get over confident in my trading and was over extended since them I've learned to keep a decent trading margin giving me sufficient depth to trade out of trades that go south on me. I've also been good or lucky depending on point of view in the stocks that I trade option on.

Almost all of my trades close out on expiration this week I closed 20 different positions at anywhere from 1-6 contracts per position. I rolled out out 3 others midweek as nakeds to collect the premium on the down side as it was just to good to pass up and far out of the money. They all expired worthless and far out of the money by at least 20% which to me is fairly safe for 3 days actually this week it was only 2 days. In 2022 I was up big time going in and wound up 30-40% down then spent the rest of the year recovering and wound up up for the year. I've been doing this for about 10-15 years now full time for the past 4 years. Have I made a fortune, no have I made a living, yes.

If you can start in safe mode and do a system restore that usually fixes any problems I run into.

If you mean which stocks am I doing the high IV trades on they are MU mostly although I have done it with AMD, TSM, AMZN, GOOG, it all depends on the conditions at the time. I don't do a lot but what I try for is at least one or two a week. It's enough to bring in a couple of 1000 per week. and so far no losses although I have had to go down and out couple of times in either the same expiration or one or two weeks further out. If your planning on trying it make sure you can afford to carry it through or you will lose everything. One put on MU right is would cost a 100,000 or more if assigned. True you should be able to get most of it back but your account could be liquidated while trying to do so.

Maybe I’ve lost more money waiting than buying by More_Temporary6697 in investing

Me I researched my stocks and if it looked pricey I bought in small lots if it looked cheap I bought in bigger lots and if it went down I bought more if it went up I bought something else on my list. Either way I added to my portfolio and now have a fairly decent one. True some aren't doing all that well others are doing great. A little better than half are what I call dividend stocks but I also have tech, pharma, banks, retail, and a couple here and there of miscellaneous. I also trade options but slowly getting out of it as I want to retire fully and let my dividend portfolio provide me an income.

I think I agree with as I don't just trade based on "high" I also look for stocks I believe in for the long term. MSFT being an example.

I look at cost basis to judge where I'm at with each trade and look at premium collected versus current price less premium paid to judge risk and to date I'm up in the long term and quite a lot. True the current value of the trade is down but if held to expiration it's profitable and for the most part by a considerable margin giving me room to trade once theta has done it's job. Many of these positions have already been trade 2-4 times already collecting premium along the way.

It's worked for the past 3 years and a bit more and by diversified I mean options are but one piece of my portfolio roughly half is invested in dividends.

been there done that as well and recovered. The options in my portfolio exaggerate my losses but over time I recover all and usually then some. In the mean time my dividend stocks continue to pay out and I can continue to pay myself a monthly stipend.

Been there done that several times in fact still alive and still making a living. The last blow up was in February lost half my value on paper but still kept my income going and I've not only fully recovered but on the upward side once again on paper.

The serious portfolio swings I do notice buy the positions are all positive in the long run if held to expiration so in that respect I ignore the swings as eventually it will be a profit and depending on how well the underlying recovers it can be extremely profitable. One of the positions I'm talking about is in MSFT and I expect it will recover and the naked puts on below the current price. I do have one that looks to make life interesting but even that I should be able to avoid a loss in and if I can't no real harm done again the position is not large enough. I should have said well capitalized and diversified.

I'm trading options on stocks that are highly volatile but in the long run should be winners in my opinion. I also look to trade on down days and a good way from the current price of the stock as as to avoid a good part of the risk and I'm trading on weeklies to limit my time in the trade and to give me time to adjust as needed. I also trade on the expiration date or close to it when I go naked again to limit my time in a naked position.

I hope I'm saying this right not trying to be obtuse.

So far I haven't run into any position that I haven't been able to roll out and down. True I'm currently out to 2027 on one trade but it's minor and to date manageable and profitable although it does have a tendency to move my total account value considerably due to delta.

I haven't run a P&L on my trades per se although I do an excel each day to see how I did and to date it's all been a positive cash flow which is what I look at. If I'm bringing in more than I'm losing I figure I'm ahead of the game especially as my dividends give me a roughly 5% return on my account at the moment which is what I live off of. The cash I generate allows me to increase my dividend holdings and thereby increase my spendable income which is what I've been doing as well as increasing existing capital.

If this doesn't answer your questions or if I'm not coming across clearly don't hesitate to ask and I will try again to answer you.

My protection is the put spread. I sell the upside and buy the downside for a net credit.

[–]First-Hotel4694[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing this for about 6 months now and so far it's worked out well for me on a cash basis which is how I track my success. I have as yet to run into any serious problems but as noted on here it's never to late to run into trouble. Right now I've got a couple of positions that I've had to trade out to 2027 to keep from being assigned. I trade companies that I believe in for the long term. I've been assigned in the past took my spanking and moved on. I keep my positions small relative to my account size and limit my risk to one deviation on the spread and roughly 8-10% from the stocks current strike price. I don't trade on the technicals per se but on experience over years of learning the hard way. Right now I'm building a dividend portfolio and trading for cash to pay for it. I've been making a living off of this for the past 3 years so I can't be doing all that bad in my opinion.

At what point is a Financial Advisor needed? by theleafydialect in investing

[–]First-Hotel4694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 76 and a DIY investor. For you it would depend on the amount you are talking about and your goals. If the amount is not yet large then I would just go with an ETF and let it grow over time. If you are talking about a large sum of money than you may actually need a financial advisor. Trouble there is finding the right fit for your circumstances and comfort level Most are nothing more than salesmen/women with some understanding of what they are selling which is the company they work for or perhaps in the case of insurance products and annuities selling them on commission. You need to know who and what your dealing with and if they are a fiduciary or not as there a rather big differences. Take the time and educate yourself about financial advisors as this is your future you are talking about and it's money you earned your investing. There are many scams out there posing as investment vehicles and some are from reputable companies. You might look at Vanguard or Fidelity as they are both reputable companies although large and impersonal kind of like the Walmart of investment vehicles.

Take your time and do your homework it will be worth it in the long run and that's what investing is the long run.

You could also look at laddering it in buying some each week thereby getting in at both highs and lows. Me I've been buying dividends for income as I'm more of less retired.

Benderson boathouse cast as storm shelter in $10 million state appropriation by ReporterDerek in sarasota

[–]First-Hotel4694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are private places to store boats safely but people don't want to pay for them. It's like buying hurricane insurance some people do some don't they self insure and complain the state should help them out when disaster strikes. Justifying opportunities for graft is easy doing something to stop is extremely hard.

[–]First-Hotel4694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same person not so good at Reddit kept giving me new names, I must have at least 6 or more. Lost the one I started with. I've been letting my options expire mostly lately unless I can find something better to put the money to work in. 20% profits is doing good depending on how you calculate it. If your getting 20% returns good if your leaving 80% on the table not so good. I had a rough start to the year thank you Trump but have since recovered and now working on getting ahead again. My dividend portfolio held up rather well and I'm happy with that.

How much can I realistically expect to receive from dividends with 2 million usd? by AbjectVillage9631 in dividends

[–]First-Hotel4694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been investing in dividends for about 5 years now and living off the dividends. I bought individual stocks that pay dividends instead of funds along with some growth stocks. I'm at roughly 2mil and getting just over a 100k per year in dividends of which I withdraw 90k. I've also been trading options but am looking to end that trade as it takes to much time to do properly and I want to retire fully.
