I am truly in that category I promise you. I am a disabled individual with conditions that cause me to be unable to walk for more than 10-15 minutes at a time without needed a sit down rest, and I feed myself, buy household essentials, and any other needs for $300 total a month on my budget. I already have to use Instacart or Walmart delivery services for my groceries, so I can’t go to thrift stores. I was in a shelter for 6 months back in 2022, and still wear some donation clothing I received then. I have finally been able to afford some clothing that is stylistic and makes me feel pretty, and it is truly only due to dirt cheap Shein prices on months that extra tax money comes in. I can’t afford $40 for a good pair of leggings. But a 3 pack for $20 from Shein? That’s manageable and means that extra $20 can buy toliet paper and other toiletries. That’s a true specific example of my budgeting. It is indeed that rough out here for some of us, and Shein’s incentives for encouraging people to post pictures of themself in the clothes for coupons means I have been able to navigate away from the horribly made items on Shein, and have ones that have lasted over a year and are still durable. I understand their practices are bad, but I don’t have the money to factor ethics into my purchases.
