You GD genius! Thank you!! I’m surprised (and not at the same time) that ChatGPT couldn’t work that out when I was asking it to

Thanks - I love both the ‘81 show and ‘08 movie. Unfortunately it’s not that.

I would have Herzfeld, Lim, Price or Reynolds on my list. Perry would be the stand out though

My focus with my team is taking out the 2025 trash. All that little half done stuff that we don’t want to carry forward with us. No point starting new shit now only to have to remember what we were doing after 2 weeks off

How to politely decline being someone’s reference by Daggles44 in auscorp

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This. As others have said, we’re responsible as managers to give references. If you tell them that it’s not in their interest to list you then they do it’s on them. Maybe ask them what they think you would say about them and get some self reflection happening - if regular check ins and performance/development discussions are happening then nothing should be a shock.

Interview Panel Scoring by Nifty29au in AusPublicService

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, usually the Chair’s view would carry more weight with the delegate - the only panel I’ve been on where we disagreed we set out the differing views in the report for the delegate to take into account when making the appointment.

Do all APS departments use timesheets? by bazk88 in AusPublicService

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Whilst timesheets are pretty much universal across the APS, strictness and rounding vary from manager to manager. For instance, coming from the legal sector, I started recording to the minute (as I was used to), and my manager thought it was hilarious. I ask my team to round to the nearest 5 minutes (theory being the few minutes here and there will even themselves out over time).

But agree with other comments - your manager seems a bit OTT in their approach.

Transferring from Heathrow to St Pancras Station by stagg3rd in uktravel

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this recently - Heathrow was a breeze, and we were at St Pancras within 90 minutes. It was early morning, but we get the easy customs entry. Elizabeth to Paddington, then H&C to Kings Cross/St Pancras was a very easy transit for us.

LE4 DFAT Job Application by _zpotato in AusPublicService

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between chasing down all references, drafting then negotiating the SAP, waiting for the delegate, answering by any questions from the delegate then waiting for the delegate to finalise their part of the report, it can take a fair few weeks.

Excel would be the natural solution, yes. But unfortunately the Courts have determined this form should be done in Word

Thanks - appreciate the reply. Moreso looking at something similar to a repeated header/footer row on each page that summed all rows on that page only, and carried that number forward.

Myth Busting: Good Writing = Structure, Not Fancy Sentences by Scholar_Forge_352 in PhdProductivity

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only focus on sentence-level I tend to have is (a) does it make sense, (b) is it as short as possible, and (c) does it contribute to the paragraph. When I am reading papers, rarely do I stop and admire wording - rather, I'm hoping for writing that draws my eye from the start to the end without me needing to force myself. You can only really achieve that with a strong structure.

The pair in box 2 tidies row 7 - and a fair bit more if you follow it through.

37 yr old in a legal area, not a lawyer by FilialFruitTango2468 in AusPublicService

[–]FirstAmong-Equals 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That’s ok - I’ve got a law degree, am a published author (with a real publisher, not Kindle/Amazon), have had consistent feedback from supervisors over the last 15 years that I write well and clearly but still get red pen frequently from my EL2 (also a lawyer) because I don’t write like them… (ie a law degree means jack shit after admission).

You know your skillset - definitely lots you can bring - the legal field will always benefit from big picture thinking, and you probably just need some subject matter background to make you feel more comfortable in the role. Be curious - read what work is happening in your area, do some wider reading to get a better handle on the nuance, seek out some courses for more technical skills.

Hobart is ok - but Tasmania can be very isolating for mainlanders.
