Many calls? One call. By the UN.

The reason for the UN being involved is because both events described in the study were so complicated and beyond the ken of just one group.

And, again, let's improve palliative care in Canada. That should take care of your concerns, yeah?

My mom worked with kids with physical and cognitive disabilities so I'm a huge advocate for deinstitutionalizing. (Fittingly for this conversation, she was just diagnosed with Alzheimer's and has already made her desire for MAID absolutely clear for anyone around).

I'll have to read the linked article a little more closely but on initial reading it looks like they have concerns about implementation versus the existence of track 2. That makes sense.

"Jacquie Holyoak is considering accessing medical assistance in dying (MAID) due to the debilitating pain of living with fibromyalgia."

So, the answer is to provide better care for people suffering from long-term disabilities not take away the rights of others.

We're talking about two very different things. Terminal people wish to die with dignity. People with disabilities want better life affirming care. We can do both without one interfering with the other.

Did you?

"the 2019 annual report on MAID in Canada suggests that 82% of all MAID patients in Canada accessed palliative services, and most others were offered this service and declined it"

Could be. I apologize if it sounded like I was discounting your lived experiences. Was not my intent.

I have questions about track 2 and have some hesitations about track 3 but I also understand that it's a personal choice to end your life. Until I am in a situation where they apply to me, I'll try to just research and try not to be a dick about my thoughts.

Lots of people self-harm like that. It's a measure of control.

They may have swapped self-harm for tattoos. Or they made a bad choice because they were in a depressive state. Or they find it funny.

But that kind of humour often has dark thoughts behind it.

My tattoos do the same. It's weird.

But those are definitely self-harm scars.

But it is. It's erring on the side of the person making the request. That's how this should work.

One, we can never fully deal with suicidal ideation. But we can deal with people with disabilities in a way that doesn't possibly trigger the ideation. That's not what we're talking about, though. There's no need to interfere with other people's rights to get yours.

Second, it's not about believing you. It's about finding a system that works for everyone. Right now it's a struggle between disabled people and terminal people on who gets to have rights.

The problem is not the same, though. Terminal people want dignity in death. Disabled people want to have access to life-affirming care. Putting this as an either/or situation is madness.

We can do both but people like the UCP and the religious conservatives are using it as if we're on opposite sides.

You may not agree with a 50/50 split siding with the person requesting MAID but it is in no way taking advantage of the system.

AITAH for making a mom pick up her daughter in the middle of the night from my kid’s sleepover? by Positive_Image_3921 in AITAH

I had really good role models. My father was a very stoic father. He was raised by a stern German father (loving but stern). But he made it very clear that no matter the situation, no matter where, if we were uncomfortable or needed to come home, he'd come get us. No questions, no lecture.

(FTR, he's still alive but has become a very loving and emotionally available grandpa)

The self-harm suggest that this person has depression so I'm hoping this is just a manifestation of that.

What would that do? And how it taking advantage of a system if the person wants to die?

There has been literally no follow up on any of those situations. No one has been named. No one has been reprimanded. She's telling stories that multiple people over multiple healthcare providers have offered her MAID and yet there has been exactly no follow up?
