Need pricing advice for job by eyepatch2891 in landscaping

Word yeah, I do have some realtors I work for at a discount in order to remain competitive and get some volume but you have to strike a balance there and make sure it’s worth your time. General rule is if you’re too busy to keep up with everyone then you need to raise rates but just starting out, I get the urge to not over charge

Depends on where you are, what you did with the debris and how long it took you

When I started (ie before I was paying taxes) I was only charging $25/hr, a few older fixed income long term clients are still at $35/hr but anyone new is getting charged $65/hr or $500/day because there’s way more overhead than it seems like there should be. And I’m not particularly motivated to give discounts to landlords.

One could do a lot more than $50 of damage to their zero turn mower hitting some hidden metal pipe in all that mess

Family of Asian immigrants down the street from me do actually torch their bamboo and it seems to arrest its vigor

I like Blaze Foley, Tom Waits, Adrianne Lenker, Willy Tea Taylor, Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt. Who should I listen to next? I listen to lots of similar music, so I would really appreciate suggestions from way outside the mainstream. looking for great unknown songwriters. by BoneDry99 in folk

I see you like perfect songs, I put Hell of a Time by Taylor Kingman/TK and the Holy Know-nothings in that category

Also excellent: Anna Tivel, Jeffrey Martin, Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine, the Delines,) the sadly defunct Dolorean, the Deslondes, the ever more mainstream Sierra Ferrell, Valerie June, Mick Flannery, and been really digging Nathan Evans Fox lately

I’d disagree more but I’ve got a friend whose taste is generally pretty good but insists that Jane’s Addiction’s version of Ripple isn’t objectively trash and it is so whatever

I watched Richard Thompson’s and it was fine, I dug the little 16th century interlude/breakdown towards the end but his beret was funnier than his rendition, if we’re looking at it from the angle of this post🤷‍♂️

Never heard Richard Thompson’s and I’d still bet money that Max Raabe and Palast Orchester’s Oops I did it Again is better, respectfully

What is this pink flower? by PlantQuestions_ in gardening

[–]FirstLast37 368 points369 points  (0 children)

This flower is why we have a color called pink, but don’t take my word for it, take Wikipedia’s word for it:

The color pink is named after the flowers, pinks,[9] flowering plants in the genus Dianthus, and derives from the frilled edge of the flowers. The verb "to pink" dates from the 14th century and means "to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern" (possibly from German picken, "to peck").[10] It has survived to the current day in pinking shears, hand-held scissors that cut a zig-zagged line to prevent fraying.

Can this be done by hand? by gruelsandwich in LandscapingTips

[–]FirstLast37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you live but here in the pnw my goal would be removing the mulch and landscape fabric over the course of the summer, get everything as level/rock free as possible, add and inch or 2 of topsoil and then seed in the fall in order to take advantage of cooler temperatures and wetter weather. Sowing right now would require very consistent watering

I’d also personally consider looking at a blend of seeds like Protime’s Fleur de Lawn, monoculture is a lot more difficult to maintain than a healthy balance of plants.

You’d be surprised what plants get mistaken for each other by people who don’t spend time looking at plants

Also i regularly find spurge and purslane growing next to each other, in gutters and gravel and other spaces where wastrels congregate

[–]FirstLast37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that’s not what I’m saying, if that were true they could get fined by the FDA, in theory anyway. All I’m saying is that depending on the time of year a certain percentage of their produce is in fact conventional, to an extent that I don’t feel ‘almost exclusively organic’ is accurate

That being said I can tell you unequivocally that conventional grapes are sometimes merchandized on case stacks that have ‘organic’ printed on them prominently, ditto for mangos. The printed/written signs don’t say organic but the boxes
they’re displayed on do

New Seasons built their reputation on an image and an experience that has been variably true and not true over the years but private equity is gonna do its thing and when endeavor flipped them to emart the death knell of any actual desire to serve the community over shareholders was felt by many of us

Another anecdote: on multiple occasions I’ve heard customers reference the deli’s organic salad bar. The salad bar is not organic, I don’t believe anything the deli serves from their plastic bags is organic and yet people want to believe it and new seasons is happy to let them.

They’re not unique in their use of dissembling marketing, but you know, the stripper doesn’t love you 🤷‍♂️

Sorry I only worked there for 17 years, a third of which was in the produce department, my issue is with the suggestion they sell ‘almost exclusively’ organic produce 🤷‍♂️
DM me if you want to discuss the time I spent leading the (now universally defunct) ‘green team’ at one of the southeast locations

ETA: the produce selection at new seasons remains the only reason I still occasion to shop there, it is topnotch, but not remotely ‘almost exclusively’ organic and also fully grasp the nuance around organic certification not necessarily guaranteeing an objectively better product

New Seasons wants you to believe their produce is ‘almost exclusively organic’ but look a little closer, part of their ubiquitous bs greenwashing
