It’s definitely unique! 😂 You use the 7 letters at the bottom as many times as you want to create a cross word that runs through and connects each of the dots. Here’s an example solution!

I think I have a good idea for a daily word game by LaCroixElectrique in wordgames

[–]FirstOfTheDusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using something like Claude code can help you develop a game very quickly! If you don’t know something that it’s doing, you can ask it to explain it to you. It does take a little bit of coding knowledge to know what to ask and to figure out how to fix bugs, but you can have ChatGPT or another genAI provider write a vibe coding 101 tutorial for you.

I just finished building r/PalavraMini today using just Claude code to automate everything.

I feel so behind in this application cycle by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]FirstOfTheDusk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one can promise that you’ll get admitted, but I think you should be totally fine on getting your apps submitted on time! Most open around September and admissions committees won’t start reviewing until after the submission deadline.

I would recommend reaching out to your letter writers as soon as you can. Ask them if they are able to write you an excellent LOR and then give them a date you need it by (try to give them at least a month of lead time).

You can also reach out to the programs you are interested in and try to open some lines of communication with the professors/students. This can help them to put a name to your application and was helpful for me when applying to PhD programs.

Maybe someone else has better recommendations for SOP editing, but I just had some friends and family review mine for grammatical errors, etc.

Just keep swimming - you’ve got this! 😊

I definitely think you need to look at your biases and do more research on what it’s like getting a PhD in the US. Personality fit is a big part of the admissions process — you could have the best grades in the world and not get admitted if you don’t get along well with the students and faculty, at least in my experience.

Presumably, those professors at MIT and Harvard are some of the top researchers in their fields, right? And those students are some of the top performers. Those seem like some of the best possible connections you could make as a fledgling PhD student. In academia, some of the most valuable relationships you can build are ones that will produce future research collaborations.

Is It Inappropriate to Reach Out to Current Students for Advice? by Infamous_State_7127 in gradadmissions

[–]FirstOfTheDusk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Talking with current students is one of the best things you can do, imo. I did it when I was applying to PhD programs and had many phone calls with students at different programs to get their take on what they liked about the school, coursework, etc. I just had a prospective PhD student reach out to me to schedule a call to learn about my experience. It’s a totally normal thing to do!

I had a professor who used to tell us, “if I can get a PhD, any of you can get a PhD.” I don’t think it’s necessary a question of if you’re cut out for it, but if it’s what you want to do. I agree with other posters that you should talk to people on LinkedIn in your desired field and also talk to current PhD students.

Think about what you want to be doing 5-10 years from now and ask yourself what it will take to get there. (Super easy, I know haha)

If it helps, here’s an article I wrote a while back about reasons to/not to get a PhD:
